The surface structure of the clean Co{1010BAR} surface and a c(2 x 2) potassium overlayer have been determined by quantitative low energy electron diffraction. The Co{1010BAR} sample has been shown to be laterally unreconstructed with the surface being uniquely terminated by an outermost closely packed double layer (dz12 = 0.68 angstrom). A damped oscillatory relaxation of the outermost three atomic layers occurs, with relaxations DELTA-dz12 = -6.5 +/- 2% and DELTA-dz23 = +1.0 +/- 2%.

The c(2 x 2) overlayer formed at a coverage of 0.5 ML was subjected to a full I-V analysis. A range of adsorption sites were tested including fourfold hollow, on-top, and both long and short bridge sites in combination with both "long" and "short" cobalt interlayer terminations. A clear preference was found for adsorption in the maximal coordination fourfold hollow site. No switching of surface termination occurs. The potassium adatoms reside in the [1210BAR] surface channels directly above second layer cobalt atoms with a potassium to outermost cobalt interlayer separation of 2.44 +/- 0.05 angstrom. Potassium-cobalt bond lengths of 3.40 +/- 0.05 and 3.12 +/- 0.05 angstrom between the four (one) outermost (second) layer nearest-neighbour substrate atoms suggests a potassium effective radius of 1.87 +/- 0.05 angstrom, somewhat smaller than the Pauling covalent radius and considerably larger than the ionic radius (1.38 angstrom). The alkali-surface bonding is thus predominantly "covalent"/"metallic".

As the potassium fractional coverage of a cobalt {1010BAR} surface is increased over the range 0.2 to 0.6 monolayer the adlayer passes through a series of phase transitions. A commensurate phase is formed at exactly 0.5 monolayer, and corresponds to adatoms bonded in high-symmetry hollow sites on the unreconstructed cobalt surface, with an effective adatom radius lying between the ionic and covalent radii of potassium. A detailed structural study shows that the structural transitions can be characterised within a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model, with small lateral displacements of adatoms away from hollow sites in the low and high coverage phases. The low coverage phases progress from a distributed vacancy structure to a low density domain-wall structure; while the high coverage phase formed above half a monolayer is a high density asymmetric domain-wall structure.

With the help of in situ multi-step FTIR Spectroscopy, two types of adsorbed geminal CO have been observed for the first time at an electrochemically modified Rh electrode. A doublet band of two broad peaks at 2166 and 2112cm is assigned to geminal CO on Rh surface oxide (or hydroxide) produced by the electrochemical modification process, and a doublet band of two peaks near 2103 and 2033cm is ascribed to geminal CO on surface clusters of Rh formed by reduction of Rh surface oxide. Based on the evolution of FTIR spectra with the electrode potential, the surface processes of a Rh electrode, subjected to a potential cycling treatment at 1.5Vs between -0.275 and 2.4V for 2min, have been elucidated. The present results at the solid/liquid electrochemical interface were compared with those obtained at the solid/gas interface, and consistent conclusions were achieved.

Transition metals are often introduced to a catalyst as promoters to improve catalytic performance. In this work, we study the promotion effect of transition metals on Co, the preferred catalytic metal for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis because of its good compromise of activity, selectivity and stability, for ethylene chemisorption using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, aiming to provide some insight into improving the alpha-olefin selectivity. In order to obtain the general trend of influence on ethylene chemisorption, twelve transition metals (Zr, Mn, Re, Ru, Rh, It, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au) are calculated. We find that the late transition metals (e.g. Pd and Cu) can decrease ethylene chemisorption energy. These results suggest that the addition of the late transition metals may improve alpha-olefin selectivity. Electronic structure analyses (both charge density distributions and density of states) are also performed and the understanding of calculated results is presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. The chain growth probability (alpha value) is one of the most significant parameters in Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis. To gain insight into the chain growth probability, we systematically studied the hydrogenation and C-C coupling reactions with different chain lengths on the stepped Co(0001) surface using density functional theory calculations. Our findings elucidate the relationship between the barriers of these elementary reactions and the chain length. Moreover, we derived a general expression of the chain growth probability and investigated the behavior of the alpha value observed experimentally. The high methane yield results from the lower chain growth rate for C-1 + C-1 coupling compared with the other coupling reactions. After C-1, the deviation of product distribution in FT synthesis from the Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution is due to the chain length-dependent paraffin/olefin ratio. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. The electrochemical uptake of oxygen on a Ru(0001) electrode was investigated by electron diffraction, Auger spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. An ordered (2 × 2)-O overlayer forms at a potential close to the hydrogen region. At +0.42 and +1.12 V vs Ag/AgCl, a (3 × 1) phase and a (1 × 1)-O phase, respectively, emerge. When the Ru electrode potential is maintained at +1.12 V for 2 min, RuO2 grows epitaxially with its (100) plane parallel to the Ru(0001) surface. In contrast to the RuO domains, the non-oxidized regions of the Ru electrode surface are flat. If, however, the electrode potential is increased to +1.98 V for 2 min, the remaining non-oxidized Ru area also becomes rough. These findings are compared with O overlayers and oxides on the Ru(0001) and Ru(101¯1) surfaces created by exposure to gaseous O under UHV conditions. On the other hand, gas-phase oxidation of the Ru(101¯0) surface leads to the formation of RuO with a (100) orientation. It is concluded that the difference in surface energy between RuO(110) and RuO(100) is quite small. RuO again grows epitaxially on Ru(0001), but with the (110) face oriented parallel to the Ru(0001) surface. The electrochemical oxidation of the Ru(0001) electrode surface proceeds via a 3-dimensional growth mechanism with a mean cluster size of 1.6 nm, whereas under UHV conditions, a 2-dimensional oxide film (1-2 nm thick) is epitaxially formed with an average domain size of 20 µm. © 2000 American Chemical Society.

Gas phase photoreforming of methanol using a Pt/TiO2 photocatalyst has been performed under flow conditions at elevated temperatures. Comparing the activity of the reforming process as a function of temperature under dark and irradiated conditions shows a significant enhancement in the rate of H2 production using the photo-assisted conditions at temperatures between 100-140 °C. At higher temperatures, the effect of irradiation is small with the process dominated by the thermal process. Deactivation of the catalyst was observed under irradiation but the catalyst was easily regenerated using an oxygen treatment at 120 °C. Diffuse Reflectance Infra-red Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) showed that the activity of the catalyst could be correlated with the presence of the photogenerated trapped electrons. In addition, lower amounts of CO adsorbed on Pt, compared to those observed in the dark reaction, were found for the UV-irradiated systems. It is proposed that CO and adsorbed intermediates, such as formate, can act as inhibitors in the photoreforming process and this is further supported by the observation that, before and after the regeneration process in O2, the CO and surface adsorbed organic intermediate products are removed and the activity is recovered.

The density of reactive carboxyl groups on the surface of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NP) was modulated using a combination of high-molecular weight (MW) encapped and low MW non-encapped PLGA. Carboxyl groups were activated using carbodiimide chemistry and conjugated to bovine serum albumin and a model polyclonal antibody. Activation of carboxyl, groups in solution-phase PLGA prior to NP formation was compared with a postformation activation of peripheral carboxyl groups on intact NP. Activation before or after NP formation did not influence conjugation efficiency to NP prepared using 100% of the low-MW PLGA. The effect of steric stabilization using poly(vinyl alcohol) reduced conjugation of a polyclonal antibody from 62 mu g/(mg NP) to 32 mu g/(mg NP), but enhanced particulate stability. Increasing the amount of a high-MW PLGA also reduced Conjugation, with the activation post-formation still superior to the preformation approach. Drug release studies showed that high proportions of high-MW PLGA in the NP produced a longer sustained release profile of a model drug (celecoxib). It can be concluded that activating intact PLGA NP is superior to activating component parts prior to NP formation. Also, high MW PLGA could be used to prolong drug release, but at the expense of conjugation efficiency on to the NP surface. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res 87A: 873-884, 2008

Ruthenium is one of the poorest catalysts for CO oxidation under normal conditions (low or medium O coverage and normal temperature). However, a recent study [Science 285, 1042 (1999)] reveals that, under femtosecond laser irradiation, CO2 can be formed on the Ru surface, and the reaction follows an electron-mediated mechanism. We carried out density functional theory calculations to investigate CO oxidation via an electron-mediated mechanism on Ru(0001). By comparison to the reaction under normal conditions, following features emerge in the electron-mediated mechanism: (i) more reaction channels are open; (ii) the reaction barrier is significantly lowered. The physical origins for these novel features have been analyzed. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

The dynamics of adsorption and oxidation of CO on Ru(0001) electrode in sulfuric acid solution have been studied using in situ FTIR spectroscopy under potential control and at open circuit, the latter at 20 and 55 degrees C. The in situ IR data show clearly that the bisulfate anion adsorbs on the Ru(0001) surface over the potential range from -200 mV to 350 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl) at 20 degrees C in the absence and presence of adsorbed CO; however, increasing the temperature to 55 degrees C and/ or increasing the concentration of dissolved O-2 reduces the bisulfate adsorption. The formation of surface (hydro-) oxide at higher potentials replaces the bisulfate adsorbates. Both linear (COL) and three-fold hollow bonded CO (COH) adsorbates were produced following CO adsorption at Ru(0001) in H2SO4, as was observed in our previous studies in HClO4. However, the amount of adsorbed CO observed in H2SO4 was ca. 10% less than that in HClO4; in addition, the COL and COH frequencies were higher in H2SO4, and the onset potential for COads oxidation 25 mV lower. These new results are interpreted in terms of a model in which the adsorbed bisulfate weakens the CO adlayer, allowing the active Ru oxide layer to form at lower potentials. Significantly different results were observed at open circuit in H2SO4 compared both to the data under potential control and to our earlier data in HClO4, and these observations were rationalized in terms of the adsorbed HSO4- anions (pre-adsorbed at -200 mV) inhibiting the oxidation of the surface at open circuit (after stepping from the initial potential of -200 mV), as the latter was no longer driven by the imposed electrochemical potential but via chemical oxidation by trace dissolved O-2. Results from experiments at open circuit at 55 degrees C and using oxygen-saturated H2SO4 supported this model. The difference in Ru surface chemistry between imposed electrochemical control and chemical control has potential implications with respect to fuel cell electrocatalysis.

Poorly functioning on-site wastewater treatment systems (OSWTS) can be among the many sources of pollution to groundwater and surface water, which are of critical concern owing to potential human and ecological health risks. An investigation into the effects of on-site wastewater treatment systems (OSWTS) on surface water quality has been undertaken at several sites within a catchment in Co. Monaghan. The study sites were located in areas of 'low’ permeability, suggesting that run-off usually dominates over infiltration. Poor treatment performance of OSWTS within the catchment were found to be the result of several factors, including location in areas with unsuitable soil and site characteristics, incorrect installation, poor maintenance and inappropriate operation by the home owner.

We report the combined studies of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical in situ FTIR spectroscopy on surface oxidants and mechanisms of CO oxidation at the Ru(0001) electrodes. It is shown that CO can co-adsorb with both O and OH species at lower potential region where a low coverage of the (2 x 2)-O/OH adlayer formed; the oxidation of CO adsorbates takes place at higher potentials where a high coverage of the (1 x 1)-O/OH adlayer formed. Surface O species are not the active oxidants under all coverages studied, due to the high reaction barriers between CO and O (>1 eV). However, surface OH species with higher coverage are identified as the active oxidants, and CO oxidation takes place via a two-steps' mechanism of CO + 3OH -> COOH + 2OH -> CO2 + H2O + OH, in which three nearby OH species are involved in the CO2 formation: CO reacts with OH, forming COOH; COOH then transfers the H to a nearby OH to form H2O and CO2, at the same time, another H in the H2O transfers to a nearby OH to form a weak adsorbed H2O and a new OH. The reaction barrier of these processes is reduced significantly to around 0.50 eV. These new results not only provide an insight into surface active oxidants on Ru, which is directly relevant to fuel cell catalysis, but also reveals the extra complexity of catalytic reactions taking place at solid/liquid electrochemical interface in comparison to the relatively simpler ones at solid/gas phase.

A mechanism of CO oxidation by a thin surface oxide of Rh supported on ceria is proposed: CO is oxidized by the Rh-oxide film, which is subsequently reoxidized by a ceria surface O atom. The proposed mechanism is supported by in situ Raman spectroscopic investigations.
