Tennyson and youth

This paper will examine the prominence of Alfred Tennyson's work in several textual accounts of youth penned between 1892 and the present day, by writers including T. S. Eliot, Virgina Woolf, Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, Kingsley Amis, J. M. Coetzee, William Faulkner and Andrew Motion. The young Woolf broke in her new pens by copying out Tennyson's 'Tithonus'; Eliot had a taste for Tennyson's 'martial and sanguinary poetry; as a young man. Kingsley Amis was singular among his contemporaries precisely because he admired the work of a poet considered outdated, and a reference for Modernist verse over that of Tennyson is seen as a sign of sophistication (however ironically presented) in the writings of people as diverse as Auden, Motion and Coetzee. Psychology and interventions for pupils at risk of underachievement and school exclusion: the year 10 effect

Findings are presented from a longitudinal study of over 1,500 adolescents. Some were engaged in interventions aimed at reducing social disaffection. Participants completed measures of social-identification, academic self-concept and motivation, and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Consistent with our previous research, developmental trends in identity and self-concept were found - adolescents became more negative about some school-based factors and more positive about aspects of identity. Trends were less clear in the 120 adolescents receiving interventions. Findings demonstrate the importance of psychology in work with young people. Safe spaces and sense of identity: views and experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual young people

Empirical data on the life experiences of contemporary school-age lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) young people in Britain remains somewhat sparse. This paper reports the preliminary findings of a study conducted at a recently-initiated LGB youth Summer School. To further an appreciation of issues of concern to today's LGB teenagers, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Summer School participants (five female and five male, aged 15-18 years). The aim was to elicit their views and experiences relating to their need for support such as that offered by the Summer School. Themes drawn from participants' interviews are presented. Key issues included: being positioned as different by their majority heterosexual peers; feelings of isolation and loneliness in their peer groups and families; difficulties in finding others like themselves for companionship; and the importance of meeting more LGB people of their own age.
