A zone based systems design framework is described and utilised in the implementation of a message authentication code (MAC) algorithm based on symmetric key block ciphers. The resulting block cipher based MAC algorithm may be used to provide assurance of the authenticity and, hence, the integrity of binary data. Using software simulation to benchmark against the de facto cipher block chaining MAC (CBC-MAC) variant used in the TinySec security protocol for wireless sensor networks and the NIST cipher block chaining MAC standard, CMAC; we show that our zone based systems design framework can lead to block cipher based MAC constructs that point to improvements in message processing efficiency, processing throughput and processing latency.

Western manufacturing companies are developing innovative ways of delivering value that competes with the low cost paradigm. One such strategy is to deliver not only products, but systems that are closely aligned with the customer value proposition. These systems are comprised of integrated products and services, and are referred to as Product-Service Systems (PSS). A key challenge in PSS is supporting the design activity. In one sense, PSS design is a further extension of concurrent engineering that requires front-end input from the additional downstream sources of product service and maintenance. However, simply developing products and service packages is not sufficient: the new design challenge is the integrated system. This paper describes the development of a PSS data structure that can support this integrated design activity. The data structure is implemented in a knowledge base using the Protégé knowledge base editor.

Comparison of the performance of a conventional convection oven system with a dual-section microwave system for curing thermosetting polymer encapsulant materials has been performed numerically. A numerical model capable of analysing both the convection and microwave cure processes has been developed and is breifly outliines. The model is used to analyse the curing of a commercially available encapsulant material using both systems. Results obtained from numerical solutions are presented, confirming that the VFM system enables the cure process to be carried out far more rapidly than with the convection oven system. This capability stems from the fundamental heating processes involved, namely that microwave processing enables the heating rate to be varied independently of the material temperature. Variations in cure times, curing rates, maximum temperatures and residual stresses between the processes are fully discussed.
