We have investigated the magnetic and transport properties of nanoscaled Fe3O4 films obtained from Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technique using [(FeFe2III)-Fe-II(OBut)(8)] and [Fe-2(III)(OBut)(6)] precursors. Samples were deposited on different substrates (i.e., MgO (001), MgAl2O4 (001) and Al2O3 (0001)) with thicknesses varying from 50 to 350 nm. Atomic Force Microscopy analysis indicated a granular nature of the samples, irrespective of the synthesis conditions (precursor and deposition temperature, T-pre) and substrate. Despite the similar morphology of the films, magnetic and transport properties were found to depend on the precursor used for deposition. Using [(FeFe2III)-Fe-II(OBut)(8)] as precursor resulted in lower resistivity, higher M-S and a sharper magnetization decrease at the Verwey transition (T-V). The temperature dependence of resistivity was found to depend on the precursor and T-pre. We found that the transport is dominated by the density of antiferromagnetic antiphase boundaries (AF-APB's) when [(FeFe2III)-Fe-II(OBut)(8)] precursor and T-pre = 363 K are used. On the other hand, grain boundary-scattering seems to be the main mechanism when [Fe-2(III)(OBut)(6)] is used. The Magnetoresistance (MR(H)) displayed an approximate linear behavior in the high field regime (H > 796 kA/m), with a maximum value at room-temperature of similar to 2-3 % for H = 1592 kA/m, irrespective from the transport mechanism.

A charged particle is considered in a complex external electromagnetic field. The field is a superposition of an Aharonov-Bohm field and some additional field. Here we describe all additional fields known up to the present time that allow exact solution of the Schrodinger equation in a complex field.

CaSnO3 and SrSnO3 alkaline earth stannate thin films were prepared by chemical solution deposition using the polymeric precursor method on various single crystal substrates (R- and C-sapphire and 100-SrTiO3) at different temperatures. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (θ-2θ, ω- and φ-scans), field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence. Epitaxial SrSnO3 and CaSnO3 thin films were obtained on SrTiO3 with a high crystalline quality. The long-range symmetry promoted a short-range disorder which led to photoluminescence in the epitaxial films. In contrast, the films deposited on sapphire exhibited a random polycrystalline growth with no meaningful emission regardless of the substrate orientation. The network modifier (Ca or Sr) and the substrate (sapphire or SrTiO3) influenced the crystallization process and/or the microstructure. Higher is the tilts of the SnO6 octahedra, as in CaSnO3, higher is the crystallization temperature, which changed also the nucleation/grain growth process.

The Bernoulli's model for vibration of beams is often used to make predictions of bending modulus of elasticity when using dynamic tests. However this model ignores the rotary inertia and shear. Such effects can be added to the solution of Bernoulli's equation by means of the correction proposed by Goens (1931) or by Timoshenko (1953). But to apply these corrections it is necessary to know the E/G ratio of the material. The objective of this paper is the determination of the E/G ratio of wood logs by adjusting the analytical solution of the Timoshenko beam model to the dynamic testing data of 20 Eucalyptus citriodora logs. The dynamic testing was performed with the logs in free-free suspension. To find the stiffness properties of the logs, the residue minimization was carried out using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). From the result analysis one can reasonably assume E/G = 20 for wood logs.

The numerical simulation of flows of highly elastic fluids has been the subject of intense research over the past decades with important industrial applications. Therefore, many efforts have been made to improve the convergence capabilities of the numerical methods employed to simulate viscoelastic fluid flows. An important contribution for the solution of the High-Weissenberg Number Problem has been presented by Fattal and Kupferman [J. Non-Newton. Fluid. Mech. 123 (2004) 281-285] who developed the matrix-logarithm of the conformation tensor technique, henceforth called log-conformation tensor. Its advantage is a better approximation of the large growth of the stress tensor that occur in some regions of the flow and it is doubly beneficial in that it ensures physically correct stress fields, allowing converged computations at high Weissenberg number flows. In this work we investigate the application of the log-conformation tensor to three-dimensional unsteady free surface flows. The log-conformation tensor formulation was applied to solve the Upper-Convected Maxwell (UCM) constitutive equation while the momentum equation was solved using a finite difference Marker-and-Cell type method. The resulting developed code is validated by comparing the log-conformation results with the analytic solution for fully developed pipe flows. To illustrate the stability of the log-conformation tensor approach in solving three-dimensional free surface flows, results from the simulation of the extrudate swell and jet buckling phenomena of UCM fluids at high Weissenberg numbers are presented. The biotransformation of the sesquiterpene lactone tagitinin C by the fungus Aspergillus terreus MT 5.3 yielded a rare derivative that was elucidated by spectrometric methods. The fungus led to the formation of a different product through an unusual epoxidation reaction between C4 and C5, formation of a C3,C10 ether bridge, and a methoxylation of the C1 of tagitinin C. The chemical structure of the product, namely 1 beta-methoxy-3 alpha-hydroxy-3,10 beta-4,5 alpha-diepoxy-8 beta-isobutyroyloxygermacr-11(13)-en-6 alpha,12-olide, is the same as that of a derivative that was recently isolated from the flowers of a Brazilian population of Mexican sunflower (Tithonia diversifolia), which is the source of the substrate tagitinin C. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the substrate and the biotransformed product were evaluated in HL-60 cells using an MTT assay, and both compounds were found to be cytotoxic. We show that soil fungi may be useful in the biotransformation of sesquiterpene lactones, thereby leading to unusual changes in their chemical structures that may preserve or alter their biological activities, and may also mimic plant biosynthetic pathways for production of secondary metabolites.

The elephant walk model originally proposed by Schutz and Trimper to investigate non-Markovian processes led to the investigation of a series of other random-walk models. Of these, the best known is the Alzheimer walk model, because it was the first model shown to have amnestically induced persistence-i.e. superdiffusion caused by loss of memory. Here we study the robustness of the Alzheimer walk by adding a memoryless stochastic perturbation. Surprisingly, the solution of the perturbed model can be formally reduced to the solutions of the unperturbed model. Specifically, we give an exact solution of the perturbed model by finding a surjective mapping to the unperturbed model. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2012

Corrosion research in steels is one of the areas in which Mossbauer spectroscopy has become a required analytical technique, since it is a powerful tool for both identifying and quantifying distinctive phases (which contain Fe) with accuracy. In this manuscript, this technique was used to the study of corrosion resistance of plasma nitrided AISI 316L samples in the presence of chloride anions. Plasma nitriding has been carried out using dc glow-discharge, nitriding treatments, in medium of 80 vol.% H-2 and 20 vol.% N-2, at 673 K, and at different time intervals: 2, 4, and 7 h. Treated samples were characterized by means of phase composition and morphological analysis, and electrochemical tests in NaCl aerated solution in order to investigate the influence of treatment time on the microstructure and the corrosion resistance, proved by conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy (CEMS), glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and potentiodynamic polarization. A modified layer of about 8 gin was observed for all the nitrided samples, independently of the nitriding time. A metastable phase, S phase or gamma(N), was produced. It seems to be correlated with gamma`-Fe-4 N phase. If the gamma(N) fraction decreases, the gamma` fraction increases. The gamma(N) magnetic nature was analyzed. When the nitriding time increases, the results indicate that there is a significant reduction in the relative fraction of the magnetic gamma(N) (in) phase. In contrast, the paramagnetic gamma(N) (p) phase increases. The GAXRD analysis confirms the Mossbauer results, and it also indicates CrN traces for the sample nitrided for 7 h. Corrosion results demonstrate that time in the plasma nitriding treatment plays an important role for the corrosion resistance. The sample treated for 4 h showed the best result of corrosion resistance. It seems that the epsilon/gamma` fraction ratio plays an important role in thin corrosion resistance since this sample shows the maximum value for this ratio. (c) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

In this paper we discuss the existence of solutions for a class of abstract differential equations with nonlocal conditions for which the nonlocal term involves the temporal derivative of the solution. We consider a generalized two-species population dynamic model and analytically solve it for the amensalism and commensalism ecological interactions. These two-species models can be simplified to a one-species model with a time dependent extrinsic growth factor. With a one-species model with an effective carrying capacity one is able to retrieve the steady state solutions of the previous one-species model. The equivalence obtained between the effective carrying capacity and the extrinsic growth factor is complete only for a particular case, the Gompertz model. Here we unveil important aspects of sigmoid growth curves, which are relevant to growth processes and population dynamics. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) regulate genes involved in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, and are targets of drugs approved for human use. Whereas the crystallographic structure of the complex of full length PPAR gamma and RXR alpha is known, structural alterations induced by heterodimer formation and DNA contacts are not well understood. Herein, we report a small-angle X-ray scattering analysis of the oligomeric state of hPPAR gamma alone and in the presence of retinoid X receptor (RXR). The results reveal that, in contrast with other studied nuclear receptors, which predominantly form dimers in solution, hPPAR gamma remains in the monomeric form by itself but forms heterodimers with hRXR alpha. The low-resolution models of hPPAR gamma/RXR alpha complexes predict significant changes in opening angle between heterodimerization partners (LBD) and extended and asymmetric shape of the dimer (LBD-DBD) as compared with X-ray structure of the full-length receptor bound to DNA. These differences between our SAXS models and the high-resolution crystallographic structure might suggest that there are different conformations of functional heterodimer complex in solution. Accordingly, hydrogen/deuterium exchange experiments reveal that the heterodimer binding to DNA promotes more compact and less solvent-accessible conformation of the receptor complex.

In this study, catalysts containing 5 wt.% Ni deposited on a support composed of a CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution deposited on alumina were tested in the steam reforming of methane. The supports, with various ratios of Ce to Zr, were prepared by co-precipitation of the oxide precursors, followed by calcination in synthetic air. The catalysts were then prepared by Ni impregnation of the supports. The prepared solids were characterized by temperature-programmed reduction with H-2 (TPR-H-2), in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The XRD analysis confirmed the formation of a solid solution between ZrO2 and CeO2. In the catalytic tests, it was found that catalysts with higher Ce content did not exhibit deactivation during 6 h of reaction. The catalyst with highest Ce content, Ni(0.8Ce0.2Zr)AI, provided the best result, with the highest rate of conversion of methane and the lowest carbon deposition, which may be partly due to the smaller Ni-0 crystallites in this sample and also the segregated CeO2 particles may have favored H2O adsorption which could lead to higher C gasification. The steady state kinetic mechanism of the H(2)O(2)-supported oxidation of different organic substrates by peroxidase from leaves of Chamaerops excelsa palm trees (CEP) has been investigated. An analysis of the initial rates vs. H(2)O(2) and reducing substrate concentrations is consistent with a substrate-inhibited Ping-Pong Bi Bi reaction mechanism. The phenomenological approach expresses the peroxidase Ping-Pong mechanism in the form of the Michaelis-Menten equation and leads to an interpretation of the effects in terms of the kinetic parameters K(m)(H2O2)center dot K(m)(AH2)center dot k(cat)center dot K(SI)(AH2) and of the microscopic rate constants k(1) and k(3) of the shared three-step catalytic cycle of peroxidases. Abstract Background The importance of the lung parenchyma in the pathophysiology of asthma has previously been demonstrated. Considering that nitric oxide synthases (NOS) and arginases compete for the same substrate, it is worthwhile to elucidate the effects of complex NOS-arginase dysfunction in the pathophysiology of asthma, particularly, related to distal lung tissue. We evaluated the effects of arginase and iNOS inhibition on distal lung mechanics and oxidative stress pathway activation in a model of chronic pulmonary allergic inflammation in guinea pigs. Methods Guinea pigs were exposed to repeated ovalbumin inhalations (twice a week for 4 weeks). The animals received 1400 W (an iNOS-specific inhibitor) for 4 days beginning at the last inhalation. Afterwards, the animals were anesthetized and exsanguinated; then, a slice of the distal lung was evaluated by oscillatory mechanics, and an arginase inhibitor (nor-NOHA) or vehicle was infused in a Krebs solution bath. Tissue resistance (Rt) and elastance (Et) were assessed before and after ovalbumin challenge (0.1%), and lung strips were submitted to histopathological studies. Results Ovalbumin-exposed animals presented an increase in the maximal Rt and Et responses after antigen challenge (p<0.001), in the number of iNOS positive cells (p<0.001) and in the expression of arginase 2, 8-isoprostane and NF-kB (p<0.001) in distal lung tissue. The 1400 W administration reduced all these responses (p<0.001) in alveolar septa. Ovalbumin-exposed animals that received nor-NOHA had a reduction of Rt, Et after antigen challenge, iNOS positive cells and 8-isoprostane and NF-kB (p<0.001) in lung tissue. The activity of arginase 2 was reduced only in the groups treated with nor-NOHA (p <0.05). There was a reduction of 8-isoprostane expression in OVA-NOR-W compared to OVA-NOR (p<0.001). Conclusions In this experimental model, increased arginase content and iNOS-positive cells were associated with the constriction of distal lung parenchyma. This functional alteration may be due to a high expression of 8-isoprostane, which had a procontractile effect. The mechanism involved in this response is likely related to the modulation of NF-kB expression, which contributed to the activation of the arginase and iNOS pathways. The association of both inhibitors potentiated the reduction of 8-isoprostane expression in this animal model.

In this work, carbon supported nickel based nanoparticles were prepared by impregnation method and used as anode electrocatalysts for the glycerol conversion. These metallic powders were mixed with a suitable amount of a Nafion/water solution to make catalytic inks which were then deposited onto the surface of carbon Toray used as a conductive substrate. Long-term electrolyses of glycerol were carried out in alkaline medium by chronoamperometry experiments. Analysis of the oxidation products was performed with ion-exclusion liquid chromatography which separates the analytes by ascending pKa. The spectroscopic measurements have shown that the cobalt content in the anode composition did contribute to the CAC bond cleavage of the initial molecule of glycerol.
