Introduction to the Software-defined Radio Approach

Telecommunications have been in constant evolution during past decades. Among the technological innovations, the use of digital technologies is very relevant. Digital communication systems have proven their efficiency and brought a new element in the chain of signal transmitting and receiving, the digital processor. This device offers to new radio equipments the flexibility of a programmable system. Nowadays, the behavior of a communication system can be modified by simply changing its software. This gave rising to a new radio model called Software Defined Radio (or Software-Defined Radio - SDR). In this new model, one moves to the software the task to set radio behavior, leaving to hardware only the implementation of RF front-end. Thus, the radio is no longer static, defined by their circuits and becomes a dynamic element, which may change their operating characteristics, such as bandwidth, modulation, coding rate, even modified during runtime according to software configuration. This article aims to present the use of GNU Radio software, an open-source solution for SDR specific applications, as a tool for development configurable digital radio.

Generating unconstrained two-dimensional non-guillotine cutting patterns by a Recursive Partitioning Algorithm

In this study, a dynamic programming approach to deal with the unconstrained two-dimensional non-guillotine cutting problem is presented. The method extends the recently introduced recursive partitioning approach for the manufacturer's pallet loading problem. The approach involves two phases and uses bounds based on unconstrained two-staged and non-staged guillotine cutting. The method is able to find the optimal cutting pattern of a large number of pro blem instances of moderate sizes known in the literature and a counterexample for which the approach fails to find known optimal solutions was not found. For the instances that the required computer runtime is excessive, the approach is combined with simple heuristics to reduce its running time. O desenho no processo projetivo: estudo das representações gráficas de projetos de Paulo Mendes da Rocha

Há anos vem-se questionando o papel da representação gráfica na arquitetura, diante das novas tecnologias gráficas computacionais e novos processos projetivos delas decorrentes. Entretanto, o desenho à mão livre ainda se mostra atuante no processo projetivo, marcado por um olhar atento, uma percepção individual e um tempo de execução que permite imersão, entrega e reflexão. Este artigo apresenta uma análise a partir de um olhar mais atento ao desenho de projetos do arquiteto Paulo Mendes da Rocha, como contribuição para a discussão sobre o papel do desenho analógico no processo projetivo. Foram selecionados alguns projetos do arquiteto: Projeto para o Concurso de remodelação do centro urbano de Santiago (Chile); Estádio Serra Dourada; Edifício Jaraguá, Caetano de Campos; Ginásio do Clube Atlético Paulistano (1958); Residência no Butantã (1964); residência Fernando Millan (1970) e Museu Brasileiro da Escultura (1986). Este artigo apresenta estudos de leitura sobre os desenhos originais do arquiteto com o objetivo de detectar as intenções projetuais, conceitos e características do projeto. Foram feitas marcações gráficas sobre os desenhos originais, evidenciando uma leitura particular do pesquisador que permitiu uma melhor compreensão dos projetos.
