Modern sugarcane cultivars are complex hybrids resulting from crosses among several Saccharum species. Traditional breeding methods have been employed extensively in different countries over the past decades to develop varieties with increased sucrose yield and resistance to pests and diseases. Conventional variety improvement, however, may be limited by the narrow pool of suitable genes. Thus, molecular genetics is seen as a promising tool to assist in the process of developing improved varieties. The SUCEST-FUN Project (http://sucest-fun.org) aims to associate function with sugarcane genes using a variety of tools, in particular those that enable the study of the sugarcane transcriptome. An extensive analysis has been conducted to characterise, phenotypically, sugarcane genotypes with regard to their sucrose content, biomass and drought responses. Through the analysis of different cultivars, genes associated with sucrose content, yield, lignin and drought have been identified. Currently, tools are being developed to determine signalling and regulatory networks in grasses, and to sequence the sugarcane genome, as well as to identify sugarcane promoters. This is being implemented through the SUCEST-FUN (http://sucest-fun.org) and GRASSIUS databases (http://grassius.org), the cloning of sugarcane promoters, the identification of cis-regulatory elements (CRE) using Chromatin Immunoprecipitation-sequencing (ChIP-Seq) and the generation of a comprehensive Signal Transduction and Transcription gene catalogue (SUCAST Catalogue).

Laryngeal structural anomalies were described in 13 cases of Richieri-Costa Pereira syndrome, and four previously reported cases were reviewed. The 17 individuals examined had the typical laryngeal anomalies and vocal disorders previously described. The new findings are the laryngeal microweb observed in three cases and arytenoid anteriorization movement observed in 14 cases. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Objective: this study investigated the feelings of women regarding end-of-life decision making after ultrasound diagnosis of a lethal fetal malformation. The aim of this study was to present the decision making process of women that chose for pregnancy termination and to present selected speeches of women about their feelings. Design: open psychological interviews conducted by a psychologist immediately after the diagnosis of fetal malformation by ultrasound. Analysis of the results was performed through a content analysis technique. Setting: the study was carried out at a public university hospital in Brazil. Participants: 249 pregnant women who had received the diagnosis of a severe lethal fetal malformation. Findings: fetal anencephaly was the most frequent anomaly detected in 135 cases (54.3%). Termination of pregnancy was decided by 172 (69.1%) patients and legally authorised by the judiciary (66%). The reason for asking for termination was to reduce suffering in all of them. In the 77 women who chose not to terminate pregnancy (30.9%), the reasons were related to feelings of guilt (74%). Key conclusions: the results support the importance of psychological counselling for couples when lethal fetal malformation is diagnosed. The act of reviewing moral and cultural values and elements of the unconscious provides assurance in the decision-making process and mitigates the risk of emotional trauma and guilt that can continue long after the pregnancy is terminated. Background: The biorhythm of serum uric acid was evaluated in a large sample of a clinical laboratory database by spectral analysis and the influence of the gender and age on uric acid variability. Methods: Serum uric acid values were extracted from a large database of a clinical laboratory from May 2000 to August 2006. Outlier values were excluded from the analysis and the remaining data (n = 73,925) were grouped by gender and age ranges. Rhythm components were obtained by the Lomb Scargle method and Cosinor analysis. Results: Serum uric acid was higher in men than in women older than 13 years (p<0.05). Compared with 0-12 year group, uric acid increased in men but not in women older than 13 years (p<0.05). Circannual (12 months) and transyear (17 months) rhythm components were detected, but they were significant only in adult individuals (>26 years, p<0.05). Cosinor analysis showed that midline estimating statistic of rhythm (MESOR) values were higher in men (range: 353-368 mu mol/L) than in women (range: 240-278 mu mol/L; p<0.05), independent of the age and rhythm component. The extent of predictable change within a cycle, approximated by the double amplitude, represented up to 20% of the corresponding MESOR. Conclusions: Serum uric acid biorhythm is dependent on gender and age and it may have relevant influence on preanalytical variability of clinical laboratory results.

The Xylella fastidiosa comparative genomic database is a scientific resource with the aim to provide a user-friendly interface for accessing high-quality manually curated genomic annotation and comparative sequence analysis, as well as for identifying and mapping prophage-like elements, a marked feature of Xylella genomes. Here we describe a database and tools for exploring the biology of this important plant pathogen. The hallmarks of this database are the high quality genomic annotation, the functional and comparative genomic analysis and the identification and mapping of prophage-like elements. It is available from web site http://www.xylella.lncc.br.
