We extend some results of Rosenthal, Cembranos, Freniche, E. Saab-P. Saab and Ryan to study the geometry of copies and complemented copies of c(0)(Gamma) in the classical Banach spaces C(K, X) in terms of the carclinality of the set Gamma, of the density and caliber of K and of the geometry of X and its dual space X*. Here are two sample consequences of our results: (1) If C([0, 1], X) contains a copy of c(0)(N-1), then X contains a copy of c(0)(N-1). (2) C(beta N, X) contains a complemented copy of c(0)(N-1) if and only if X contains a copy of c(0)(N-1). Some of our results depend on set-theoretic assumptions. For example, we prove that it is relatively consistent with ZFC that if C(K) contains a copy of c(0)(N-1) and X has dimension NI, then C(K, X) contains a complemented copy of cc(0)(N-1).

Electrochemical lead analyses of gunshot residues (GSRs) were performed using an acidic solution with a bare gold microelectrode in the presence of chloride ions. GSRs from four different guns (0.38 in. revolver, 12 caliber pump-action shotgun, 0.38 repeating rifle, and a 0.22 caliber semi-automatic rifle) and six different types of ammunition (CleanRange (R), normal, semi-jacketed, especial 24g (R), 3T (R), CBC (R), and Eley (R)) were analyzed. Results obtained with the proposed methodology were compared with those from an atomic absorption spectrometry analysis, and a paired Student's t-test indicated that there was no significant difference between them at the 95% confidence level. With this methodology, a detection limit of 1.7 nmol L-1 (3 sigma/slope), a linear range between 10 and 100 nmol L-1, and a relative standard deviation of 2.5% from 10 measurements were obtained. This manuscript reports the first example of up-conversion properties involving Yb3+ and Tb3+ ions in five isostructural Lanthanide-Organic Frameworks (LnOFs), herein designated as UCMarker-1 to UCMarker-5, respectively, and their application as optical probes for the identification of gunshot residues (GSRs) and the ammunition encryption procedure. The excitation of the Yb3+2 F-7/2 <-> F-2(5/2) transition (980 nm) at room temperature leads to visible up-conversion (UC) emission of Tb3+ D-5(4) -> F-7(J). The GSR and lead-free primer residues are easily identified upon UV radiation (lambda = 254 nm). These results prove that the exploration of LnOFs to identify GSR is attractive for the identification of ammunition origins or caliber recognition.

Skeletal muscles from old rats fail to completely regenerate following injury. This study investigated whether pharmacological stimulation of beta 2-adrenoceptors in aged muscles following injury could improve their regenerative capacity, focusing on myofiber size recovery. Young and aged rats were treated with a subcutaneous injection of beta 2-adrenergic agonist formoterol (2 mu g/kg/d) up to 10 and 21 days after soleus muscle injury. Formoterol-treated muscles from old rats evaluated at 10 and 21 days postinjury showed reduced inflammation and connective tissue but a similar number of regenerating myofibers of greater caliber when compared with their injured controls. Formoterol minimized the decrease in tetanic force and increased protein synthesis and mammalian target of rapamycin phosphorylation in old muscles at 10 days postinjury. Our results suggest that formoterol improves structural and functional regenerative capacity of regenerating skeletal muscles from aged rats by increasing protein synthesis via mammalian target of rapamycin activation. Furthermore, formoterol may have therapeutic benefits in recovery following muscle damage in senescent individuals.

Tantalum coatings are of particular interest today as promising candidates to replace potentially hazardous electrodeposited chromium coatings for tribological and corrosion resistant applications, such as the internal lining on large-caliber gun barrels. Tantalum coatings have two crystalline phases, α-Ta (body-centered-cubic) and β-Ta (metastable tetragonal) that exhibit relatively different properties. Alpha-Ta is typically preferred for wear and corrosion resistant applications and unfortunately, is very difficult to deposit without the assistance of substrate heating or post-annealing treatments. Furthermore, there is no general consensus on the mechanism which causes α or β to form or if there is a phase transition or transformation from β → α during coating deposition. In this study, modulated pulsed power (MPP) magnetron sputtering was used to deposit tantalum coatings with thicknesses between 2 and 20 μm without external substrate heating. The MPP Ta coatings showed good adhesion and low residual stress. This study shows there is an abrupt β → α phase transition when the coating is 5–7 μm thick and not a total phase transformation. Thermocouple measurements reveal substrate temperature increases as a function of deposition time until reaching a saturation temperature of ~ 388 °C. The importance of substrate temperature evolution on the β → α phase transition is also explained.
