The objective was to determine the effects of carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation on exercise-induced hormone responses and post-training intramyocellular lipid stores (IMCL). Twenty-four elite male athletes (28.0 +/- 1.2 years) were randomized to receive CHO (maltodextrin solution) or zero energy placebo solution (control group). The high-intensity running protocol consisted of 10 x 800 m at 100% of the best 3000-m speed (Vm3 km) and 2 x 1000 m maximal bouts in the morning and a submaximal 10-km continuous easy running in the afternoon of day 9. IMCL concentrations were assessed by H-1-MRS before (-day 9) and after training (day 9) in soleus (SO) and tibialis anterior (TA) muscles. Blood hormones were also measured before, during, and post-exercise. The percent change (Delta%) in TA-IMCL was higher in the CHO group (47.9 +/- 24.5 IMCL/Cr) than in the control group (-1.7 +/- 13.1, respectively) (P=.04). Insulin concentrations were higher in the CHO group post-intermittent running compared to control (P=.02). Circulating levels of free fatty acids and GH were lower in the CHO group (P>.01). The decline in performance in the 2nd 1000-m bout was also attenuated in this group compared to control (P<.001 and P=.0035, respectively). The hormonal milieu (higher insulin and lower GH levels) in the CHO group, together with unchanged free fatty acid levels, probably contributed to the increased IMCL stores. This greater energy storage capacity may have improved post-exercise recovery and thus prevented performance deterioration. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Periodontal disease (PD) is a chronic inflammatory and alveolar bone destructive disease triggered by microorganisms from the oral biofilm. Oral inoculation of mice with the periodontopathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) induces marked alveolar bone loss and local production of inflammatory mediators, including Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MW). The role of MW for alveolar bone resorption during PD is not known. In the present study, experimental PD was induced in BALB/c wild-type mice (WT) and MW knockout mice (MIF-/-) through oral inoculation of Aa. Despite enhanced number of bacteria, MIF-/- mice had reduced infiltration of TRAP-positive cells and reduced alveolar bone loss. This was associated with decreased neutrophil accumulation and increased levels of IL-10 in periodontal tissues. TNF-alpha production was similar in both groups. In vitro, LPS from Aa enhanced osteoclastic activity in a MIF-dependent manner. In conclusion, MIF has role in controlling bacterial growth in the context of PD but contributes more significantly to the progression of bone loss during PD by directly affecting differentiation and activity of osteoclasts. The search for bioactive molecules to be employed as recognition elements in biosensors has stimulated researchers to pore over the rich Brazilian biodiversity. In this sense, we introduce the use of natural cashew gum (Anacardium occidentale L) as an active biomaterial to be used in the form of layer-by-layer films, in conjunction with phthalocyanines, which were tested as electrochemical sensors for dopamine detection. We investigated the effects of chemical composition of cashew gum from two different regions of Brazil (Piaui and Ceara states) on the physico-chemical characteristics of these nanostructures. The morphology of the nanostructures containing cashew gum was studied by atomic force microscopy which indicates that smooth films punctuated by globular features were formed that showed low roughness values. The results indicate that, independent of the origin, cashew gum stands out as an excellent film forming material with potential application in nanobiomedical devices as electrochemical sensors. Introduction: Neuroimaging has been widely used in studies to investigate depression in the elderly because it is a noninvasive technique, and it allows the detection of structural and functional brain alterations. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) are neuroimaging indexes of the microstructural integrity of white matter, which are measured using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). The aim of this study was to investigate differences in FA or MD in the entire brain without a previously determined region of interest (ROI) between depressed and non-depressed elderly patients. Method: Brain magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from 47 depressed elderly patients, diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria, and 36 healthy elderly patients as controls. Voxelwise statistical analysis of FA data was performed using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). Results: After controlling for age, no significant differences among FA and MD parameters were observed in the depressed elderly patients. No significant correlations were found between cognitive performance and FA or MD parameters. Conclusion: There were no significant differences among FA or MD values between mildly or moderately depressed and non-depressed elderly patients when the brain was analyzed without a previously determined ROI. Este artigo faz parte de um amplo estudo de avaliação da adequação no uso de técnicas estatísticas multivariadas em teses e dissertações de duas instituições de ensino superior na área de marketing na temática do comportamento do consumidor, entre 1997 e 2006. Neste artigo são focalizadas onze técnicas multivariadas (análise de regressão, análise discriminante, análise de regressão logística, correlação canônica, análise multivariada de variância, análise conjunta, modelagem de equações estruturais, análise fatorial, análise de conglomerados, análise de correspondência, escalonamento multidimensional), as quais têm apresentado grande potencial de uso em estudos de marketing. Foi objetivo no trabalho relatado a análise da adequação do emprego dessas técnicas às necessidades dos problemas de pesquisa apresentados nas teses e dissertações e, também, a aferição do nível de adequação no atendimento de suas premissas. De forma geral, os resultados sugerem a necessidade de um aumento do comprometimento dos pesquisadores na verificação de todos os preceitos teóricos de aplicação das técnicas multivariadas.

Tumores miofibroblásticos inflamatórios raramente acometem vias urinárias ou crianças, comumente mimetizando neoplasias malignas nos exames de imagem. Foram descritos apenas 35 casos desses tumores na bexiga de crianças, segundo a literatura recente. Os autores apresentam o caso de uma criança com um tumor miofibroblástico vesical que evoluiu favoravelmente após ressecção cirúrgica completa.

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar os resultados de uma pesquisa eleitoral realizada nos Campi da USP-Capital pelo Centro de Estudos das Negociações Internacionais (CAENI) e pelo Instituto Júnior de Pesquisas Sociais (IJPS) durante o período de campanha do segundo turno da eleição presidencial de 2010. Discutimos o processo de amostragem e a implicação de pesquisar sobre um universo de pessoas mais escolarizadas e jovens do que a população total. Mostraremos que é mais fácil isolar um comportamento prospectivo nessas condições do que em uma amostra onde o universo é a população de eleitores inteira do país.

A experiência com a construção de um Repositório e uma Política Institucional de Acesso Aberto à Produção Técnico-Científica, Artística e Didática da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) é o desafio apresentado neste trabalho. Tendo em vista que a USP ocupa posição de liderança na América Latina conforme ranking internacional de produção científica, congrega 5.732 docentes e mais de 80 mil alunos de graduação e pós-graduação, e tem seu sistema de informação composto por 43 bibliotecas distribuídas em diferentes campi na capital e em diversas cidades do interior do estado de São Paulo, foram necessárias múltiplas e complexas estratégias para a mudança de paradigma e inserção no cenário atual do acesso aberto. Dentre elas, podem ser citadas a composição de grupo multiplicador composto de professores e bibliotecários, criação de espaço de referência cobrindo temas diversificados sobre o acesso aberto, workshop e palestras diversas realizadas em variados campi e bibliotecas, fórum aberto para discussão do acesso aberto na USP e elaboração de carta de intenções em fase de assinatura e endosso pela comunidade uspiana. Paralelo a essas atividades, que buscaram o envolvimento da comunidade, ocorreu também à implantação do repositório institucional a partir de projetos piloto em três unidades de ensino e pesquisa das áreas de exatas, biológicas e humanidades. Tais estratégias são descritas e demonstram o estágio de desenvolvimento do projeto e sua trajetória de implantação.

Background: Few data on the definition of simple robust parameters to predict image noise in cardiac computed tomography (CT) exist. Objectives: To evaluate the value of a simple measure of subcutaneous tissue as a predictor of image noise in cardiac CT. Methods: 86 patients underwent prospective ECG-gated coronary computed tomographic angiography (CTA) and coronary calcium scoring (CAC) with 120 kV and 150 mA. The image quality was objectively measured by the image noise in the aorta in the cardiac CTA, and low noise was defined as noise < 30HU. The chest anteroposterior diameter and lateral width, the image noise in the aorta and the skin-sternum (SS) thickness were measured as predictors of cardiac CTA noise. The association of the predictors and image noise was performed by using Pearson correlation. Results: The mean radiation dose was 3.5 ± 1.5 mSv. The mean image noise in CT was 36.3 ± 8.5 HU, and the mean image noise in non-contrast scan was 17.7 ± 4.4 HU. All predictors were independently associated with cardiac CTA noise. The best predictors were SS thickness, with a correlation of 0.70 (p < 0.001), and noise in the non-contrast images, with a correlation of 0.73 (p < 0.001). When evaluating the ability to predict low image noise, the areas under the ROC curve for the non-contrast noise and for the SS thickness were 0.837 and 0.864, respectively. Conclusion: Both SS thickness and CAC noise are simple accurate predictors of cardiac CTA image noise. Those parameters can be incorporated in standard CT protocols to adequately adjust radiation exposure.
