In this work, the persistent luminescence mechanisms of Tb3+ (in CdSiO3) and Eu2+ (in BaAl2O4) based on solid experimental data are compared. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows the different nature of the inter- and intraconfigurational transitions for Eu2+ and Tb3+, respectively. The electron is the charge carrier in both mechanisms, implying the presence of electron acceptor defects. The preliminary structural analysis shows a free space in CdSiO3 able to accommodate interstitial oxide ions needed by charge compensation during the initial preparation. The subsequent annealing removes this oxide leaving behind an electron trap. Despite the low band gap energy for CdSiO3, determined with synchrotron radiation UV-VUV excitation spectroscopy of Tb3+, the persistent luminescence from Tb3+ is observed only with UV irradiation. The need of high excitation energy is due to the position of F-7(6) level deep below the bottom of the conduction band, as determined with the 4f(8)-> 4f(7)5d(1) and the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions. Finally, the persistent luminescence mechanisms are constructed and, despite the differences, the mechanisms for Tb3+ and Eu2+ proved to be rather similar. This similarity confirms the solidity of the interpretation of experimental data for the Eu2+ doped persistent luminescence materials and encourages the use of similar models for other persistent luminescence materials. ZnO and doped M:ZnO (M = V, Fe and Co) nanostructures were synthesized by microwave hydrothermal synthesis using a low temperature route without addition of any surfactant. The transition metal ions were successfully doped in small amount (3% mol) into ZnO structure. Analysis by X-ray diffraction reveals the formation of ZnO with the hexagonal (wurtzite-type) crystal structure for all the samples. The as-obtained samples showed a similar flower-like morphology except for Fe:ZnO samples, which presented a plate-like morphology. The photocatalytic performance for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation confirmed that the photoactivity of M:ZnO nanostructures decreased for all dopants in structure, according to their eletronegativity. Photoluminescence spectroscopy was employed to correlate M:ZnO structure with its photocatalytical properties. It was suggested that transition metal ions in ZnO lattice introduce defects that act as trapping or recombination centers for photogenerated electrons and holes, making it impossible for them reach the surface and promote the photocatalytical process.

Polymers from natural sources are particularly useful as biomaterials for medical devices applications. In this study, the results of characterization of a gelatin network electrolyte doped with europium triflate (Eu(CF3SO3)(3)) are described. The unusual electronic properties of the trivalent lanthanide ions make them well suited as luminescent reporter groups, with many applications in biotechnology. Samples of solvent-free electrolytes were prepared with a range of guest salt concentration. Materials based on Eu(CF3SO3)(3) were obtained as mechanically robust, flexible, transparent, and completely amorphous films. Samples were characterized by thermal analysis (thermo-gravimetry analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrochemical stability, scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy.

This study describes the results of the characterization of polymer electrolytes using gelatin matrix doped with europium triflate and/or different ionic liquids. Samples of solvent-free electrolytes were prepared and characterized by ionic conductivity measurements, thermal analysis, electrochemical stability, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Electrolyte samples are thermally stable up to approximately 220 degrees C. All the materials synthesized are totally amorphous. The room temperature conductivity maximum of this electrolyte system is based on ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, (C(2)mim)(OAc) (1.18 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 30 degrees C). The electrochemical stability domain of all samples is about 2.0 V versus Li/Li+. This new series of materials represents a promising alternative in polymer electrolytes research field. The preliminary studies carried out with electrochromic devices (ECDs) incorporating optimized compositions have confirmed that these materials may perform as satisfactory multifunctional component layers in the field of "smart windows". This new materials, will open a land of promising applications in many areas: optics, energy, medicine for example as membranes and separation devices, ECD-based devices, sensors, etc. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This paper describes the effect of using different titanium precursors on the synthesis and physical properties of SrTiO3 powders obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction measurements, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) were carried out to investigate the structural and optical properties of the SrTiO3 spherical and cubelike-shaped particles. The appropriate choice of the titanium precursor allowed the control of morphological and photoluminescence (PL) properties of SrTiO3 compound. The PL emission was more intense in SrTiO3 samples composed of spherelike particles. This behavior was attributed to the existence of a lower amount of defects due to the uniformity of the spherical particles.

In this work we report studies of the photoluminescence emission in samples based on Si/SiOx films deposited by the Pulsed Electron Beam Ablation (PEBA) technique. The samples were prepared at room temperature using targets with different Si/SiO2 concentrations. The samples were characterized using X-ray Absorption Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) at the Si-K edge, Raman spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The concentration of a-Si and nc-Si in the film was dependent on the silicon concentration in the target. It was also observed that the PL is strongly dependent on the structural amorphous/crystalline arrangement. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two novel coordination polymers with the formula {[Ln(2)(2,5-tdc)(3)(dmso)(2)].H2O}(n) (Ln = Tb(III) for (1) and Dy(III) for (2)), (2,5-tdc(2-) = 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate and dmso = dimethylsulfoxide) have been synthesized by the diffusion method and characterized by thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Structure analysis reveals that 2,5-tdc(2-) play a versatile role toward different lanthanide ions to form three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in which the lanthanides ions are heptacoordinated. Photophysical properties were studied using excitation and emission spectra, where the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions D-5(4 ->) F-7(J) (J= 6, 5, 4 and 3) for (1) and (F9/2 -> HJ)-F-4-H-6 (J = 15/2, 13/2 and 11/2) for (2), indicating that 2,5-tdc(2-) is a good sensitizer. Manganese tungstate (MnWO4) nanorods were prepared at room temperature by the co-precipitation method and synthesized after processing in a microwave-hydrothermal (MH) system at 140 degrees C for 6-96 min. These nanorods were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinements and Fourier transform (FT)-Raman spectroscopy. The growth direction, shape and average size distribution of nanorods were observed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HR-TEM). The optical properties of the nanorods were investigated by ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement data and FT-Raman spectroscopy indicate that the MnWO4 precipitate is not a single phase structure while the nanorods synthesized by MH processing have a wolframite-type monoclinic structure without deleterious phases. FT-Raman spectra exhibited the presence of 17 Raman-active modes from 50 to 1,000 cm(-1). TEM and HR-TEM micrographs indicated that the nanorods are aggregated due to surface energy by Van der Waals forces and grow along the [100] direction. UV-vis absorption measurements confirmed non-linear values for the optical band gap (from 3.2 to 2.72 eV), which increased as the MH processing time increased. The structural characterizations indicated that the presence of defects in the MnWO4 precipitate promotes a significant contribution to maximum PL emission, while MnWO4 nanorods obtained by MH processing decrease the PL emission due to the reduction of defects in the lattice.

In this communication, we report the effect of different surfactants [cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT)] on the shape, growth and photoluminescence (PL) behavior of manganese tungstate (MnWO4) crystals synthesized by the microwave-hydrothermal (MH) method at 413 K for 45 min. These crystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and PL measurements. XRD patterns proved that these crystals have a monoclinic structure. FE-SEM images showed that MnWO4 crystals exhibit different shapes and growth mechanisms depending on the surfactant employed. The CTAB cationic surfactant promotes the hindrance of small nuclei that leads to the formation of flake-like nanocrystals, while SDS and AOT anionic surfactants promote a growth of crystals to plate-like and leaf-like crystals due to considerable size effect of counter-ions (RSO4- and RSO2O-) and an increase in Na+ ion remnants. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy revealed different optical band gap values due to modifications in the shape, surface and crystal size. Finally, the effect of surfactants on the crystal shapes and average crystal size distribution causing changes in the PL behavior of MnWO4 crystals was explained. In this paper, we report our initial research to obtain hexagonal rod-like elongated silver tungstate (alpha-Ag2WO4) microcrystals by different methods [sonochemistry (SC), coprecipitation (CP), and conventional hydrothermal (CH)] and to study their cluster coordination and optical properties. These microcrystals were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinements, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies. The shape and average size of these alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals were observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The optical properties of these microcrystals were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and Rietveld refinement data confirmed that alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals have an orthorhombic structure. FT-IR spectra exhibited four IR-active modes in a range from 250 to 1000 cm(-1). XANES spectra at the W L-3-edge showed distorted octahedral [WO6] clusters in the lattice, while EXAFS analyses confirmed that W atoms are coordinated by six O atoms. FE-SEM images suggest that the alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals grow by aggregation and the Ostwald ripening process. PL properties of alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals decrease with an increase in the optical band-gap values (3.19-3.23 eV). Finally, we observed that large hexagonal rod-like alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals prepared by the SC method exhibited a major PL emission intensity relative to alpha-Ag2WO4 microcrystals prepared by the CP and CH methods.

MgTiO3 (MTO) thin films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method with posterior spin-coating deposition. The films were deposited on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates and heat treated at 350 degrees C for 2 h and then heat treated at 400, 450, 500, 550, 600, 650 and 700 C for 2 h. The degree of structural order disorder, optical properties, and morphology of the MTO thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy (MR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) measurements, and field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM) to investigate the morphology. XRD revealed that an increase in the annealing temperature resulted in a structural organization of MTO thin films. First-principles quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (B3LYP level) were employed to study the electronic structure of ordered and disordered asymmetric models. The electronic properties were analyzed, and the relevance of the present theoretical and experimental results was discussed in the light of PL behavior. The presence of localized electronic levels and a charge gradient in the band gap due to a break in the symmetry are responsible for the PL in disordered MTO lattice.
