In this paper we report a simple and environmentally friendly synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNps) and their electrocatalytic activity for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR). Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV- vis) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)protected colloidal AuNps through direct reduction of Au3+ by glycerol in alkaline medium at room temperature. For the BOR tests the AuNps were directly produced onto carbon to yield the Au/C catalyst. Levich plots revealed that the process occured via 7.2 electrons, therefore near the theoretical value of 8 electrons. When compared to bulk Au, the gold nanoparticles presented enhanced catalytic properties since the onset potential for BOR was shifted 200 mV towards negative potentials. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This work describes the study of the ethanol oxidation reaction of a Pt/C Etek electrocatalyst that was supported on different substrates, such as gold, glassy carbon and carbon cloth treated with PTFE. In the ethanol oxidation reaction, the activity varies with the substrate, as well as the pathways for ethanol oxidation, as studied by an ATR-FTIR in situ setup using the carbon cloth as the electrocatalyst support. The electrocatalyst Pt/C supported on gold starts acetaldehyde production from ethanol oxidation at an onset potential of 0.1 V less than that observed for the same process on Teflon-treated carbon cloth. The Pt/C supported on the carbon cloth starts its CO2 production for the same oxidation process at 0.2 V less than on the Pt/C supported on gold substrate. The differences in catalytic activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction depend not only on the electrocatalyst but also on various electrode factors, such as the substrate, the roughness of the electrode and the charge transfer resistance.

The CuO/CeO2 system was investigated as a catalyst for preferential CO oxidation reaction in hydrogen-rich feed (PROX-CO). The catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation (DEP) and co-precipitation (COP) methods and the catalytic performance reveals that the preparation method influences the properties of solids prepared, where a direct consequence is the difference in behavior of the catalysts in the PROX-CO reaction. A high specific area and a better dispersion of the metallic phase were obtained in the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation. The redox properties during the reaction were reported by measures of temperature programmed reduction (TPR), OSC measurements and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES-TPR) in situ showed the relationship between the preparation method, the physicochemical characteristics and redox properties in the PROX-CO reaction. By this means, the good dispersion of CuO and the best oxygen capacity are the response of the high performance of CuO/CeO2-COP catalysts for the PROX-CO reaction. The ethanol electro-oxidation reaction was studied on carbon-supported Pt, Rh, and on Pt overlayers deposited on Rh nanoparticles. The synthesized electrocatalysts were characterized by TEM and XRD. The reaction products were monitored by on-line DEMS experiments. Potentiodynamic curves showed higher overall reaction rate for Pt/C when compared to that for Rh/C. However, on-line DEMS measurements revealed higher average current efficiencies for complete ethanol electro-oxidation to CO2 on Rh/C. The average current efficiencies for CO2 formation increased with temperature and with the decrease in the ethanol concentration. The total amount of CO2, on the other hand, was slightly affected by the temperature and ethanol concentration. Additionally, the CO2 signal was observed only in the positive-going scan, none being observed in the negative-going scan, evidencing that the C-C bond breaking occurs only at lower potentials. Thus, the formation of CO2 mainly resulted from oxidative removal of adsorbed CO and CHx,ad species generated at the lower potentials, instead of the electrochemical oxidation of bulk ethanol molecules. The acetaldehyde mass signal, however, was greatly favored after increasing the ethanol concentration from 0.01 to 0.1 mol L-1, on both electrocatalysts, indicating that it is the major reaction product. For the Pt/Rh/C-based electrocatalysts, the Faradaic current and the conversion efficiency for CO2 formation was increased by adjusting the amount of Pt on the surface of the Rh/C nanoparticles. The higher conversion efficiency for CO2 formation on the Pt1Rh/C material was ascribed to its faster and more extensive ethanol deprotonation on the Pt-Rh sites, producing adsorbed intermediates in which the C-C bond cleavage is facilitated. In this study we address the problem of the response of a (electro)chemical oscillator towards chemical perturbations of different magnitudes. The chemical perturbation was achieved by addition of distinct amounts of trifluoromethanesulfonate (TFMSA), a rather stable and non-specifically adsorbing anion, and the system under investigation was the methanol electro-oxidation reaction under both stationary and oscillatory regimes. Increasing the anion concentration resulted in a decrease in the reaction rates of methanol oxidation and a general decrease in the parameter window where oscillations occurred. Furthermore, the addition of TFMSA was found to decrease the induction period and the total duration of oscillations. The mechanism underlying these observations was derived mathematically and revealed that inhibition in the methanol oxidation through blockage of active sites was found to further accelerate the intrinsic non-stationarity of the unperturbed system. Altogether, the presented results are among the few concerning the experimental assessment of the sensitiveness of an oscillator towards chemical perturbations. The universal nature of the complex chemical oscillator investigated here might be used for reference when studying the dynamics of other less accessible perturbed networks of (bio)chemical reactions.

This work describes the covalent immobilization of an ironporphyrin, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin iron(III) chloride (FeTFPP), onto maghemite/silica magnetic nanospheres covered with aminofunctionalized silica. The resulting material (gamma-Fe2O3/SiO2-NHFeP) was characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The catalytic activity of this magnetic ironporphyrin was investigated in the oxidation of hydrocarbons (styrene, (Z)-cyclooctene and R-(+)-limonene) and an herbicide (simazine) by hydrogen peroxide or 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid. Hydrocarbon and simazine oxidation reaction products were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. This catalytic system proved to be efficient and selective for hydrocarbon oxidation, leading to high product yields from styrene (89%), cyclooctene (71%) and R-(+) -limonene (86%). Simazine oxidation was attained with 100% selectivity for a dechlorinated product (OEAT), while several oxidation products were obtained for the same catalyst in homogeneous media. The catalyst can be easily recovered through application of an external magnetic field and washed after reaction. Catalyst reuse experiments for R-(+)-limonene oxidation have shown that the catalytic activity is kept at 90% after 10 consecutive reactions.

This study investigates the promoting effect of PtSnIr/C (1:1:1) electrocatalyst anode, prepared by polymeric precursor method, on the ethanol oxidation reaction in a direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). All of the materials used were 20% metal m/m on carbon. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed the presence of Pt, PtOH2, PtO2, SnO2 and IrO2 at the electrocatalyst surface, indicating a possible decorated particle structure. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis indicated metallic Pt and Ir as well as the formation of an alloy with Sn. Using the PtSnIr/C electrocatalyst prepared here with two times lower loading of Pt than PtSn/C E-tek electrocatalyst, it was possible to obtain the same maximum power density found for the commercial material. The main reaction product was acetic acid probably due to the presence of oxides, in this point the bifunctional mechanism is predominant, but an electronic effect should not be discarded.

We evaluated Arthrobacter atrocyaneus (R1AF57) as producer of oxidoreductases for oxidative kinetic resolution of racemic secondary alcohols via oxidation reaction. This bacterium was isolated from Amazon soil samples using medium enriched with (RS)-1-(4-methylphenyl)ethanol as a carbon source. The kinetic resolution of several secondary alcohols through enantioselective oxidation mediated by resting cells and growing cells of A. atrocyaneus was efficiently achieved for the most alcohols. In general, it was possible to obtain only the (S)-enantiomer from (RS)-1-arylethanols.

The ethanol electro-oxidation reaction was evaluated using a polycrystalline Au substrate modified with two different amounts of Pt using the galvanic exchange methodology. FTIR results suggest that Pt deposits have a greater ability to break the C-C bond present in the ethanol molecule. However, under potentiostatic conditions both modified Au surfaces undergo faster deactivation in comparison with polycrystalline platinum as indicated by the chronoamperometric results. XPS results indicate the presence of two phases depending on the Pt content. These are: (i) Pt-Au alloy and (ii) segregated Pt. The structural and electronic properties of these phases were related to the differences observed in the catalytic activity.

Direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) are attractive energy generators for powering portable electronic devices, mainly due to their high energy density and number of electrons per borohydride ion. However, the lack of a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the borohydride oxidation reaction limits the performance of these devices. The most commonly studied electrocatalysts for this reaction are composed of gold and platinum. Nevertheless, for these metals, the borohydride electrooxidation reaction mechanism (BOR) is not completely understood, and the total oxidation reaction, involving eight electrons per BH4- species, competes with parallel reactions, with a lower number of exchanged electrons and/or with heterogeneous chemical hydrolysis. Considering the above-mentioned issues, this work presents recent advances in the knowledge of the BOR pathways on polycrystalline (bulk) Au and Pt electrocatalysts. It presents the studies of the BOR reaction on Au and Pt electrodes using in situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FUR), and on-line Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The spectroscopic and spectrometric data provided physical evidence of intermediate species and the formation of H-2 in the course of the BOR as a function of the electrode potential. These results enabled to advance in the knowledge about the BOR pathways on Au and Pt electrocatalysts. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pt extended surfaces and nanoparticle electrodes are used to understand the origin of anomalous activities for electrocatalytic reactions in alkaline electrolytes as a function of cycling/time. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of the surfaces before and after cycling in alkaline electrolytes was used to understand the morphology of the impurities and their impact on the catalytic sites. The nature of the contaminant species is identified as 3d-transition metal cations, and the formation of hydr(oxy)oxides of these elements is established as the main reason for the observed behavior. We find that, while for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) the blocking of the sites by the undesired 3d-transition metal hydr(oxy)oxide species leads to deactivation of the reaction activities, the CO oxidation reaction and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) can have beneficial effects from the same impurities, the latter being dependent on the exact nature of the adsorbing species. These results show the significance of impurities present in real electrolytes and their impact on electrocatalysis.

Molecular modeling is growing as a research tool in Chemical Engineering studies, as can be seen by a simple research on the latest publications in the field. Molecular investigations retrieve information on properties often accessible only by expensive and time-consuming experimental techniques, such as those involved in the study of radical-based chain reactions. In this work, different quantum chemical techniques were used to study phenol oxidation by hydroxyl radicals in Advanced Oxidation Processes used for wastewater treatment. The results obtained by applying a DFT-based model showed good agreement with experimental values available, as well as qualitative insights into the mechanism of the overall reaction chain. Solvation models were also tried, but were found to be limited for this reaction system within the considered theoretical level without further parameterization.
