The existence and stability of three-dimensional (3D) solitons, in cross-combined linear and nonlinear optical lattices, are investigated. In particular, with a starting optical lattice (OL) configuration such that it is linear in the x-direction and nonlinear in the y-direction, we consider the z-direction either unconstrained (quasi-2D OL case) or with another linear OL (full 3D case). We perform this study both analytically and numerically: analytically by a variational approach based on a Gaussian ansatz for the soliton wavefunction and numerically by relaxation methods and direct integrations of the corresponding Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We conclude that, while 3D solitons in the quasi-2D OL case are always unstable, the addition of another linear OL in the z-direction allows us to stabilize 3D solitons both for attractive and repulsive mean interactions. From our results, we suggest the possible use of spatial modulations of the nonlinearity in one of the directions as a tool for the management of stable 3D solitons.

With Hg-199 atoms confined in an optical lattice trap in the Lamb-Dicke regime, we obtain a spectral line at 265.6 nm for which the FWHM is similar to 15 Hz. Here we lock an ultrastable laser to this ultranarrow S-1(0) - P-3(0) clock transition and achieve a fractional frequency instability of 5.4 x 10(-15) / root tau for tau <= 400 s. The highly stable laser light used for the atom probing is derived from a 1062.6 nm fiber laser locked to an ultrastable optical cavity that exhibits a mean drift rate of -6.0 x 10(-17) s-(1) (-16.9 mHzs(-1) at 282 THz) over a six month period. A comparison between two such lasers locked to independent optical cavities shows a flicker noise limited fractional frequency instability of 4 x 10(-16) per cavity. In this work, barium zirconate (BaZrO3) ceramics synthesized by solid state reaction method and sintered at 1670 degrees C for 4 h were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Rietveld refinement, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. XRD patterns, Rietveld refinement data and FT-IR spectra which confirmed that BaZrO3 ceramics have a perovskite-type cubic structure. Optical properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. UV-vis absorption spectra suggested an indirect allowed transition with the existence of intermediary energy levels within the band gap. Intense visible green PL emission was observed in BaZrO3 ceramics upon excitation with a 350 nm wavelength. This behavior is due to a majority of deep defects within the band gap caused by symmetry breaking in octahedral [ZrO6] clusters in the lattice. The microwave dielectric constant and quality factor were measured using the method proposed by Hakki-Coleman. The dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) was investigated experimentally and numerically using a monopole antenna through an infinite ground plane and Ansoft's high frequency structure simulator software, respectively. The required resonance frequency and bandwidth of DRA were investigated by adjusting the dimension of the same material. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

The exploration of novel synthetic methodologies that control both size and shape of functional nanostructure opens new avenues for the functional application of nanomaterials. Here, we report a new and versatile approach to synthesize SnO2 nanocrystals (rutile-type structure) using microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Broad peaks in the X-ray diffraction spectra indicate the nanosized nature of the samples which were indexed as a pure cassiterite tetragonal phase. Chemically and physically adsorbed water was estimated by TGA data and FT-Raman spectra to account for a new broad peak around 560 cm(-1) which is related to defective surface modes. In addition, the spherical-like morphology and low dispersed distribution size around 3-5 nm were investigated by HR-TEM and FE-SEM microscopies. Room temperature PL emission presents two broad bands at 438 and 764 nm, indicating the existence of different recombination centers. When the size of the nanospheres decreases, the relative intensity of 513 nm emission increases and the 393 nm one decreases. UV-Visible spectra show substantial changes in the optical absorbance of crystalline SnO2 nanoparticles while the existence of a small tail points out the presence of localized levels inside the forbidden band gap and supplies the necessary condition for the PL emission.

There is currently a strong interest in mirrorless lasing systems(1), in which the electromagnetic feedback is provided either by disorder (multiple scattering in the gain medium) or by order (multiple Bragg reflection). These mechanisms correspond, respectively, to random lasers(2) and photonic crystal lasers(3). The crossover regime between order and disorder, or correlated disorder, has also been investigated with some success(4-6). Here, we report one-dimensional photonic-crystal lasing (that is, distributed feedback lasing(7,8)) with a cold atom cloud that simultaneously provides both gain and feedback. The atoms are trapped in a one-dimensional lattice, producing a density modulation that creates a strong Bragg reflection with a small angle of incidence. Pumping the atoms with auxiliary beams induces four-wave mixing, which provides parametric gain. The combination of both ingredients generates a mirrorless parametric oscillation with a conical output emission, the apex angle of which is tunable with the lattice periodicity.

This Letter reports an investigation on the optical properties of copper nanocubes as a function of size as modeled by the discrete dipole approximation. In the far-field, our results showed that the extinction resonances shifted from 595 to 670 nm as the size increased from 20 to 100 nm. Also, the highest optical efficiencies for absorption and scattering were obtained for nanocubes that were 60 and 100 nm in size, respectively. In the near-field, the electric-field amplitudes were investigated considering 514, 633 and 785 nm as the excitation wavelengths. The E-fields increased with size, being the highest at 633 nm.
