The growth parameters (growth rate, mu and lag time, lambda) of three different strains each of Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes in minimally processed lettuce (MPL) and their changes as a function of temperature were modeled. MPL were packed under modified atmosphere (5% O-2, 15% CO2 and 80% N-2), stored at 7-30 degrees C and samples collected at different time intervals were enumerated for S. enterica and L monocytogenes. Growth curves and equations describing the relationship between mu and lambda as a function of temperature were constructed using the DMFit Excel add-in and through linear regression, respectively. The predicted growth parameters for the pathogens observed in this study were compared to ComBase, Pathogen modeling program (PMP) and data from the literature. High R-2 values (0.97 and 0.93) were observed for average growth curves of different strains of pathogens grown on MPL Secondary models of mu and lambda for both pathogens followed a linear trend with high R2 values (>0.90). Root mean square error (RMSE) showed that the models obtained are accurate and suitable for modeling the growth of S. enterica and L monocytogenes in MP lettuce. The current study provides growth models for these foodborne pathogens that can be used in microbial risk assessment. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A sensitive electrochemical sensor was successfully developed on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) modified glassy carbon electrode (GC), and used to detect byproducts formed after the electrolysis of benzene. The GC/MWCNT/CoPc electrode was applied in the detection of phenolic compounds using square wave voltammetry (SWV). The proposed sensor exhibited a sequence in the sensitivity of the tested phenols: catechol > hydroquinone > resorcinol > phenol and 1,4-benzoquinone. The detection limits for individual phenols were also calculated: catechol (15.62 mu g L-1), hydroquinone (17.91 mu g L-1), resorcinol (46.12 mu g L-1), phenol (58.83 mu g L-1) and 1,4-benzoquinone (13.75 mu g L-1). The proposed sensor was successfully applied in the determination of the total amount of phenols formed after the benzene oxidation, and the obtained results were in full agreement with those from the HPLC procedure. FALCAI MJ, LOUZADA MJQ, DE PAULA FJA, OKUBO R, VOLPON JB. A modified technique of rat tail suspension for longer periods of observation. Aviat Space Environ Med 2012; 83:1176-80. Background: Rat tail suspension is an accepted method to create experimental osteopenia. However, suspension periods longer than 3 wk may cause tail skin sloughing or rat slippage. The hypothesis was that a traction system with skeletal anchorage through one tail vertebra would prolong the suspension time without significant complications. Methods: There were 80 young adult female Wistar rats that were submitted to one of the following interventions: skeletal tail suspension (N = 20), skin tail suspension (N = 20), no intervention (N = 20), and a baseline control (N = 20). All animals were followed up either for 3 (N = 10) or 6 (N = 10) wk. Animals were assessed for clinical signs of stress and tolerance to suspension. The femur evaluation was in terms of mineral density content, mechanical resistance, and histomorphometry. Results/Discussion: All animals reached the 3-wk end point. However, for the 6-wk period, seven animals suspended by the skin traction method were discarded (70%) because of signs of stress and skin sloughing. In contrast, there was one loss in the skeletal suspension group (10%). All suspended animals developed similar osteopenia at 3 wk characterized by decreased bone mineral content, weakened bone resistance, and loss of femoral mass. At 6 wk, all suspended animals had similar osteopenic parameters, but they were not statistically different from those of the rats in the 3-wk groups. Therefore, suspension longer than 3 wk did not increase the bone deterioration in the femur.

Purpose: To evaluate the dosimetric characteristics of a new formulation of MAGIC gel, called MAGIC-f, which contains the addition of 3.3% formaldehyde, resulting in a gel with increased thermal stability. Methods: MAGIC-f gel was prepared and stored in hermetically sealed plastic containers. After irradiation, magnetic resonance images (MRI) were acquired to evaluate dose and dose distribution. Dosimetric characterization was performed by means of depth dose measurements, dose response sensitivity and linearity, temporal stability, energy and dose rate dependence, dose integration using sequential beams, temperature influence during MRI acquisition and dose distribution integrity. Results: MAGIC-f depth dose measurements are compatible with the dosimetric table data within +/- 4% uncertainty. The dosimeter's R-2 response varies linearly with dose at least from 0 to 6 Gy. The time-course of the sensitivity of the dosimeter following irradiation, indicated stabilization after 2 weeks. The dosimeter's response to irradiation was altered by 6% when increasing the energy from cobalt beams to 10 MV beams. The dose rate dependence of this new formulation of gel dosimeter is small: less than 2.5% for a variation from 200 to 500 cGy/min, and the dependence with the fractionation scheme is about 50% smaller than for standard MAGIC gel, The dependence on scanning temperature was also verified, and the integrity of the dose distribution was confirmed for a period of 90 days. Conclusions: The results demonstrate the applicability of this new dosimeter in tridimensional dose distribution measurements. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We consider modifications of the nonlinear Schrodinger model (NLS) to look at the recently introduced concept of quasi-integrability. We show that such models possess an in finite number of quasi-conserved charges which present intriguing properties in relation to very specific space-time parity transformations. For the case of two-soliton solutions where the fields are eigenstates of this parity, those charges are asymptotically conserved in the scattering process of the solitons. Even though the charges vary in time their values in the far past and the far future are the same. Such results are obtained through analytical and numerical methods, and employ adaptations of algebraic techniques used in integrable field theories. Our findings may have important consequences on the applications of these models in several areas of non-linear science. We make a detailed numerical study of the modified NLS potential of the form V similar to (vertical bar psi vertical bar(2))(2+epsilon), with epsilon being a perturbation parameter. We perform numerical simulations of the scattering of solitons for this model and find a good agreement with the results predicted by the analytical considerations. Our paper shows that the quasi-integrability concepts recently proposed in the context of modifications of the sine-Gordon model remain valid for perturbations of the NLS model.
