The modulation played by reactive oxygen species on the angiotensin II-induced contraction in type I-diabetic rat carotid was investigated. Concentration-response curves for angiotensin II were obtained in endothelium-intact or endothelium-denuded carotid from control or streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, pre-treated with tiron (superoxide scavenger), PEG-catalase (hydrogen peroxide scavenger), dimethylthiourea (hydroxyl scavenger), apocynin [NAD(P) H oxidase inhibitor], SC560 (cyclooxygenase-1 inhibitor), SC236 (cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor) or Y-27632 (Rho-kinase inhibitor). Reactive oxygen species were measured by flow cytometry in dihydroethidium (DHE)-loaded endothelial cells. Cyclooxygenase and AT1-receptor expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Diabetes increased the angiotensin II-induced contraction but reduced the agonist potency in rat carotid. Endothelium removal, tiron or apocynin restored the angiotensin II-induced contraction in diabetic rat carotid to control levels. PEG-catalase, DMTU or SC560 reduced the angiotensin II-induced contraction in diabetic rat carotid at the same extent. SC236 restored the angiotensin II potency in diabetic rat carotid. Y-27632 reduced the angiotensin II-induced contraction in endothelium-intact or -denuded diabetic rat carotid. Diabetes increased the DHE-fluorescence of carotid endothelial cells. Apocynin reduced the DHE-fluorescence of endothelial cells from diabetic rat carotid to control levels. Diabetes increased the muscular cyclooxygenase-2 expression but reduced the muscular AT1-receptor expression in rat carotid. In summary, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide anion-derived from endothelial NAD(P) H oxidase mediate the hyperreactivity to angiotensin II in type I-diabetic rat carotid, involving the participation of cyclooxygenase-1 and Rho-kinase. Moreover, increased muscular cyclooxygenase-2 expression in type I-diabetic rat carotid seems to be related to the local reduced AT1-receptor expression and the reduced angiotensin II potency. The organometallic compound [Pd(C-bzan)(SCN)(dppp)] {bzan = N-benzylideneaniline, dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane} was synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, infrared and H-1 and P-31(H-1) NMR spectroscopies. The crystal and molecular structures of the title complex were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. In vitro antimycobacterial evaluation demonstrated that the compound [Pd(C-bzan)(SCN)(dppp)] displayed a MIC of 5.15 mu M, which is superior than those values found for some commonly used anti-TB drugs and other Pd(II) complexes. V393 Scorpii is a double periodic variable characterized by a relatively stable non-orbital photometric cycle of 253 d. Mennickent et al. argue for the presence of a massive optically thick disc around the more massive B-type component and describe the evolutionary stage of the system. In this paper, we analyse the behaviour of the main spectroscopic optical lines during the long non-orbital photometric cycle. We study the radial velocity of the donor determining its orbital elements and find a small but significant orbital eccentricity (e = 0.04). The donor spectral features are modelled and removed from the spectrum at every observing epoch using the light-curve model given by Mennickent et al. We find that the line emission is larger during eclipses and mostly comes from a bipolar wind. We also find that the long cycle is explained in terms of a modulation of the wind strength; the wind has a larger line and continuum emissivity at the high state. We report the discovery of highly variable chromospheric emission in the donor, as revealed by the Doppler maps of the emission lines Mg II 4481 and C I 6588. We discuss notable and some novel spectroscopic features like discrete absorption components, especially visible at blue depressed O I 7773 absorption wings during the second half-cycle, Balmer double emission with V/R curves showing 'Z-type' and 'S-type' excursions around secondary and main eclipses, respectively, and H beta emission wings extending up to +/- 2000 km s(-1). We also discuss possible causes for these phenomena and for their modulations with the long cycle.

Carbon-supported Pt-based electrocatalysts were synthesized by Pechini method for the ethanol oxidation (EOR). Physicochemical characterizations were helpful to estimate the diameters of the obtained materials ranging from 2 nm to 5 nm. Main electrochemical experiments were carried out at 90 degrees C i.e. under the working conditions of performing the single 5 cm(2) direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). Pt(80)Sn(20)/C was the anode catalyst which has given the highest power density of 37 mW cm(-2). Importantly, the IR spectroscopy measurements associated with the qualitative analysis done at the output of the anodic compartment of the fuel cell have shown that ethanol oxidation on Pt(80)Sn(20)/C was mainly a two-electron sustainable process.
