Objective: This study compared the influence of three epoxy resin-based sealers with distinct radiopacities on the observers' ability to detect root canal filling voids during radiographic analysis. Material and methods: The root canals of 48 extracted maxillary canines were prepared and divided into three groups. Each group was laterally condensed with one sealer (AH Plus (TM), Acroseal (R) or a non-radiopaque sealer), and a longitudinal void was simulated in half of the specimens from each group (n = 8). Buccolingual radiographs were obtained and randomly interpreted for voids by a radiologist and an endodontist in a blinded fashion. Teeth were cut and inspected under a microscope to confirm the position of void. Differences in sensitivity and specificity between groups and examiners were compared using the Fisher's Exact and McNemar tests, respectively (alpha = 0.05). Results: Significantly lower sensitivity levels (p<0.05) were observed in the coronal portion of fillings performed with both radiopaque sealers. Specificity values for Acroseal (R) were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the coronal and apical portions of fillings. Conclusion: The type of root canal sealer can affect the observers' ability to detect root canal filling voids during radiographic analysis of upper single-rooted teeth.

Myofibril proteins have excellent filmogenic properties. The objective of this article was to study the effect of the thermal treatment, of the pH and of the plasticizer concentration (Cp) of the filmogenic solution (FS), using over some physical properties of edible films, using a surface and response methodology (SRM). Films were made of lyophilized myofibril proteins (LMP) extracted from bovine muscle, employing the technique of solubility obtained from diluted saline solutions. The films were elaborated from FS containing 1 g of LMP/100g of FS and from Cp of 50 g to 79 g of glycerin/100 g of LMP. The LMP was dispersed in water under moderate agitation, and the pH was kept at 2.5-3.5 with the use of acetic acid. The FS were submitted to thermal treatment at different temperatures for 45 minutes. Films were dried in ventilated oven at 37 degrees C/18hr, conditioned at 75% of relative humidity at 25 degrees C/48 hr before analysis of: mechanical properties by puncture test; apparent opacity by spectrophotometer; solubility by immersion in water; and water vapor permeability by the gravimetric method. In general, films showed good appearance, translucent, easily handled and touchable, except for the films formed with pH 2.5 and at a low temperature (35 degrees C), with a medium thickness of 0.400 +/- 0.005 mm. The pH of the FS significantly affected all the physical properties under study. The temperature of the thermal treatment of the FS greatly affected the force at the rupture, solubility and water vapor permeability. This treatment can promote intermolecular interactions through the formation of disulphide bonds; however a very intense treatment can reverse this effect by irreversible structural alterations in the proteins. The glycerol concentration affected considerably all the properties under study, with the exception of the apparent opacity. Plasticizer increases the mobility of macromolecules with consequences in all physical properties.

The multiple memory systems theory proposes that the hippocampus and the dorsolateral striatum are the core structures of the spatial/relational and stimulus-response (S-R) memory systems, respectively. This theory is supported by double dissociation studies showing that the spatial and cue (S-R) versions of the Morris water maze are impaired by lesions in the dorsal hippocarnpus and dorsal striatum, respectively. In the present study we further investigated whether adult male Wistar rats bearing double and bilateral electrolytic lesions in the dorsal hippocampus and dorsolateral striatum were as impaired as rats bearing single lesions in just one of these structures in learning both versions of the water maze. Such a prediction, based on the multiple memory systems theory, was not confirmed. Compared to the controls, the animals with double lesions exhibited no improvement at all in the spatial version and learned the cued version very slowly. These results suggest that, instead of independent systems competing for holding control over navigational behaviour, the hippocampus and dorsal striatum both play critical roles in navigation based on spatial or cue-based strategies. This paper presents the results of a simulation using physical objects. This concept integrates the physical dimensions of an entity such as length, width, and weight, with the usual process flow paradigm, recurrent in the discrete event simulation models. Based on a naval logistics system, we applied this technique in an access channel of the largest port of Latin America. This system is composed by vessel movement constrained by the access channel dimensions. Vessel length and width dictates whether it is safe or not to have one or two ships simultaneously. The success delivered by the methodology proposed was an accurate validation of the model, approximately 0.45% of deviation, when compared to real data. Additionally, the model supported the design of new terminals operations for Santos, delivering KPIs such as: canal utilization, queue time, berth utilization, and throughput capability
