The Th1/Th2 balance represents an important factor in the pathogenesis of renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). In addition, IRI causes a systemic inflammation that can affect other tissues, such as the lungs. To investigate the ability of renal IRI to modulate pulmonary function in a specific model of allergic inflammation, C57Bl/6 mice were immunized with ovalbumin/albumen on days 0 and 7 and challenged with an ovalbumin (OA) aerosol on days 14 and 21. After 24 h of the second antigen challenge, the animals were subjected to 45 minutes of ischemia. After 24 h of reperfusion, the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, blood and lung tissue were collected for analysis. Serum creatinine levels increased in both allergic and non-immunized animals subjected to IRI. However, BAL analysis showed a reduction in the total cells (46%) and neutrophils (58%) compared with control allergic animals not submitted to IRI. In addition, OA challenge induced the phosphorylation of ERK and Akt and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in lung homogenates. After renal IRI, the phosphorylation of ERK and expression of COX-2 and iNOS were markedly reduced; however, there was no difference in the phosphorylation of Akt between sham and ischemic OA-challenged animals. Mucus production was also reduced in allergic mice after renal IRI. IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 were markedly down-regulated in immunized/challenged mice subjected to IRI. These results suggest that renal IRI can modulate lung allergic inflammation, probably by altering the Th1/Th2 balance and, at least in part, by changing cellular signal transduction factors. In this work, we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the energy transfer mechanism in two isotypical 2D coordination polymers, (infinity)[(Tb1-xEux)(DPA)(HDPA)], where H(2)DPA is pyridine 2,6-dicarboxylic acid and x = 0.05 or 0.50. Emission spectra of (infinity)[(Tb0.95Eu0.05)(DPA)(HDPA)] and (infinity)[(Tb0.5Eu0.5)(DPA)(HDPA)], (I) and (2), show that the high quenching effect on Tb3+ emission caused by Eu3+ ion indicates an efficient Tb3+-> Eu3+ energy transfer (ET). The k(ET) of Tb3+-> Eu3+ ET and rise rates (k(r)) of Eu3+ as a function of temperature for (1) are on the same order of magnitude, indicating that the sensitization of the Eu3+5D0 level is highly fed by ET from the D-5(4) level of Tb3+ ion. The eta(ET) and R-0 values vary in the 67-79% and 7.15 to 7.93 angstrom ranges. Hence, Tb3+ is enabled to transfer efficiently to Eu3+ that can occupy the possible sites at 6.32 and 6.75 angstrom. For (2), the ET processes occur on average with eta(ET) and R-0 of 97% and 31 angstrom, respectively. Consequently, Tb3+ ion is enabled to transfer energy to Eu3+ localized at different layers. The theoretical model developed by Malta was implemented aiming to insert more insights about the dominant mechanisms involved in the ET between lanthanides ions. Calculated single Tb3+-> Eu3+ ETs are three orders of magnitude inferior to those experimentally; however, it can be explained by the theoretical model that does not consider the role of phonon assistance in the Ln(3+)-> Ln(3+) ET processes. In addition, the Tb3+-> Eu3+ ET processes are predominantly governed by dipole-dipole (d-d) and dipole-quadrupole (d-q) mechanisms.

Objectives To evaluate the learning, retention and transfer of performance improvements after Nintendo Wii Fit (TM) training in patients with Parkinson's disease and healthy elderly people. Design Longitudinal, controlled clinical study. Participants Sixteen patients with early-stage Parkinson's disease and 11 healthy elderly people. Interventions Warm-up exercises and Wii Fit training that involved training motor (shifts centre of gravity and step alternation) and cognitive skills. A follow-up evaluative Wii Fit session was held 60 days after the end of training. Participants performed a functional reach test before and after training as a measure of learning transfer. Main outcome measures Learning and retention were determined based on the scores of 10 Wii Fit games over eight sessions. Transfer of learning was assessed after training using the functional reach test. Results Patients with Parkinson's disease showed no deficit in learning or retention on seven of the 10 games, despite showing poorer performance on five games compared with the healthy elderly group. Patients with Parkinson's disease showed marked learning deficits on three other games, independent of poorer initial performance. This deficit appears to be associated with cognitive demands of the games which require decision-making, response inhibition, divided attention and working memory. Finally, patients with Parkinson's disease were able to transfer motor ability trained on the games to a similar untrained task. Conclusions The ability of patients with Parkinson's disease to learn, retain and transfer performance improvements after training on the Nintendo Wii Fit depends largely on the demands, particularly cognitive demands, of the games involved, reiterating the importance of game selection for rehabilitation purposes. Hyperthyroidism promotes cardiac hypertrophy and the Angiotensin type 1 receptor (AT1R) has been demonstrated to mediate part of this response. Recent studies have uncovered a potentially important role for the microRNAs (miRNAs) in the control of diverse aspects of cardiac function. Then, the objective of the present study was to investigate the action promoted by hyperthyroidism on β-MHC/miR-208b expression and on α-MHC/miR-208a expression, as well as the possible contribution of the AT1R in this event. The findings of this study confirmed that AT1R is a key mediator of the cardiac hypertrophy induced by hyperthyroidism. Additionally, we demonstrated that like β-MHC, miR-208b was down-regulated in the hyperthyroid group. Similarly, like the expression of its host gene, α-MHC, miR-208a expression was up-regulated in response to hyperthyroidism. Finally, our data suggest for the first time that AT1R mediates the hyperthyroidism-induced increase on cardiac miRNA-208a/α-MHC levels, while does not influence on the reduction of miRNA-208b/β-MHC levels.

It is postulated that accumulation of malaria-infected Red Blood Cells (iRBCs) in the liver could be a parasitic escape mechanism against full destruction by the host immune system. Therefore, we evaluated the in vivo mechanism of this accumulation and its potential immunological consequences. A massive liver accumulation of P. c. chabaudi AS-iRBCs (PciRBCs) was observed by intravital microscopy along with an over expression of ICAM-1 on day 7 of the infection, as measured by qRT-PCR. Phenotypic changes were also observed in regulatory T cells (Tregs) and dendritic cells (DCs) that were isolated from infected livers, which indicate a functional role for Tregs in the regulation of the liver inflammatory immune response. In fact, the suppressive function of liver-Tregs was in vitro tested, which demonstrated the capacity of these cells to suppress naive T cell activation to the same extent as that observed for spleen-Tregs. On the other hand, it is already known that CD4+ T cells isolated from spleens of protozoan parasite-infected mice are refractory to proliferate in vivo. In our experiments, we observed a similar lack of in vitro proliferative capacity in liver CD4+ T cells that were isolated on day 7 of infection. It is also known that nitric oxide and IL-10 are partially involved in acute phase immunosuppression; we found high expression levels of IL-10 and iNOS mRNA in day 7-infected livers, which indicates a possible role for these molecules in the observed immune suppression. Taken together, these results indicate that malaria parasite accumulation within the liver could be an escape mechanism to avoid sterile immunity sponsored by a tolerogenic environment.

Experimental two-phase frictional pressure drop and flow boiling heat transfer results are presented for a horizontal 2.32-mm ID stainless-steel tube using R245fa as working fluid. The frictional pressure drop data was obtained under adiabatic and diabatic conditions. Experiments were performed for mass velocities ranging from 100 to 700 kg m−2 s−1 , heat flux from 0 to 55 kW m−2 , exit saturation temperatures of 31 and 41◦C, and vapor qualities from 0.10 to 0.99. Pressures drop gradients and heat transfer coefficients ranging from 1 to 70 kPa m−1 and from 1 to 7 kW m−2 K−1 were measured. It was found that the heat transfer coefficient is a strong function of the heat flux, mass velocity, and vapor quality. Five frictional pressure drop predictive methods were compared against the experimental database. The Cioncolini et al. (2009) method was found to work the best. Six flow boiling heat transfer predictive methods were also compared against the present database. Liu and Winterton (1991), Zhang et al. (2004), and Saitoh et al. (2007) were ranked as the best methods. They predicted the experimental flow boiling heat transfer data with an average error around 19%.
