Purpose: The pathophysiology of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) after noncardiac surgery is not established yet. Thrombosis over a vulnerable plaque or decreased oxygen supply secondary to anemia or hypotension may be involved. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pathophysiology of ACS complicating noncardiac surgery. Methods: Clinical and angiographic data were prospectively recorded into a database for 120 consecutive patients that had an ACS after noncardiac surgery (PACS), for 120 patients with spontaneous ACS (SACS), and 240 patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD). Coronary lesions with obstructions greater than 50% were classified based on two criteria: Ambrose's classification and complex morphology. The presence of Ambrose's type II or complex lesions were compared between the three groups. Results: We analyzed 1470 lesions in 480 patients. In PACS group, 45% of patients had Ambrose's type II lesions vs. 56.7% in SACS group and 16.4% in stable CAD group (P < 0.001). Both PACS and SACS patients had more complex lesions than patients in stable CAD group (56.7% vs. 79.2% vs. 31.8%, respectively; P < 0.001). Overall, the independent predictors of plaque rupture were being in the group PACS (P < 0.001, OR 2.86; CI, 1.82-4.52 for complex lesions and P < 0.001, OR 3.43; CI, 2.1-5.6 for Ambrose's type II lesions) or SACS (P < 0.001, OR 8.71; CI, 5.15-14.73 for complex lesions and P < 0.001, OR 5.99; CI, 3.66-9.81 for Ambrose's type II lesions). Conclusions: Nearly 50% of patients with perioperative ACS have evidence of coronary plaque rupture, characterizing a type 1 myocardial infarction. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Conchocarpus fontanesianus (A. St.-Hill.) Kallunki & Pirani, Rutaceae, popularly known as pitaguará, is a native and endemic tree from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro States, Brazil. Based in the information that anticholinesterasic derivatives could act as new prototypes to treatment of Alzheimer disease, this work describes the fractionation guided by evaluation of the anticholinesterase activity of the ethanolic stems extract from C. fontanesianus. This procedure afforded the alkaloids dictamnine (1), γ-fagarine (2), skimianine (3), and 2-phenyl-1-methyl-4-quinolone (4), as well as the coumarin marmesin (5).

The present study aimed to comparatively verify the relation between the hermit crabs and the shells they use in two populations of Loxopagurus loxochelis. Samples were collected monthly from July 2002 to June 2003, at Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba Bay, São Paulo, Brazil. The animals sampled had their sex identified, were weighed and measured; their shells were identified, measured and weighed, and their internal volume determined. To relate the hermit crab's characteristics and the shells' variables, principal component analysis (PCA) and a regression tree were used. According to the PCA analysis, the three gastropod shells most frequently used by L. loxochelis varied in size. The regression tree successfully explained the relationship between the hermit crab's characteristics and the internal volume of the inhabited shell. It can be inferred that the relationship between the morphometry of an individual hermit crab and its shell is not straightforward and it is impossible to explain only on the basis of direct correlations between the body's and the shell's attributes. Several factors (such as the morphometry and the availability of the shell, environmental conditions and inter- and intraspecific competition) interact and seem to be taken into consideration by the hermit crabs when they choose a shell, resulting in the diversified pattern of shell occupancy shown here and elsewhere.

Chemical agents used in cancer therapy are associated with cell cycle arrest, activation or deactivation of mechanisms associated to DNA repair and apoptosis. However, due to the complexity of biological systems, the molecular mechanisms responsible for these activities are not fully understood. Thus, studies about gene and protein expression have shown promising results for understanding the mechanisms related to cellular responses and regression of cancer after chemotherapy. This study aimed to evaluate the gene and protein expression profiling in bladder transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) with different TP53 status after gemcitabine (1.56 μM) treatment. The RT4 (grade 1, TP53 wild type), 5637 (grade 2, TP53 mutated) and T24 (grade 3, TP53 mutated) cell lines were used. PCR arrays and mass spectrometry were used to analyze gene and protein expression, respectively. Morphological alterations were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results of PCR array showed that gemcitabine activity was mainly related to CDKN1A, GADD45A and SERTDA1 overexpression, and BAX overexpression only in the wild type TP53 cells. Mass spectrometry demonstrated that gemcitabine modulated the protein expression, especially those from genes related to apoptosis, transport of vesicles and stress response. Analyses using SEM and TEM showed changes in cell morphology independently on the cell line studied. The observed decreased number of microvillus suggests low contact among the cells and between cell and extracellular matrix; irregular forms might indicate actin cytoskeleton deregulation; and the reduction in the amount of organelles and core size might indicate reduced cellular metabolism. In conclusion, independently on TP53 status or grade of bladder tumor, gemcitabine modulated genes related to the cell cycle and apoptosis, that reflected in morphological changes indicative of future cell death.

The most typical maximum tests for measuring leg muscle performance are the one-repetition maximum leg press test (1RMleg) and the isokinetic knee extension/flexion (IKEF) test. Nevertheless, their inter-correlations have not been well documented, mainly the predicted values of these evaluations. This correlational and regression analysis study involved 30 healthy young males aged 18-24y, who have performed both tests. Pearson's product moment correlation between 1RMleg and IKEF varied from 0.20 to 0.69 and the more exact predicted test was to 1RMleg (R2 = 0.71). The study showed correlations between 1RMleg and IKEF although these tests are different (isotonic vs. isokinetic) and provided further support for cross determination of 1RMleg and IKEF by linear and multiple linear regression analysis.
