Nitrate reduces the negative effect of UV radiation on photosynthesis and pigmentation in Gracilaria tenuistipitata (Rhodophyta): the photoprotection role of mycosporine-like amino acids

Photoprotection of the agarophyte red alga Gracilaria tenuistipitata against ultraviolet radiation (UVR) was investigated in algae submitted for 1 week to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 260 mu mol photons m(-2) s(-1)) or PAR + UVR (UV-A, 8.13 W m(-2) and UV-B, 0.42 W m(-2)) under different nitrogen concentrations: 0, 0.1, and 0.5 mM of NO3-. Photosynthetic pigments decreased during the time of the experiment mainly under low nitrogen supply and UVR. Incubation under high nitrogen supply (0.5 mM) sustained the photosynthetic levels over time. In contrast, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) increased up to eightfold in the presence of UVR and 0.5 mM NO3-. Under PAR + UVR, maximal quantum yield was positively correlated to MAA abundance, whereas under PAR no correlation was found. The photosynthetic yield of algae cultivated during seven days under PAR + UVR was less affected by a 30-min exposure of high UVR (16 W m(-2)) and fully recovered after transferring to low PAR irradiances, whereas algae kept under PAR were more affected by UV exposure and no full recovery was observed. Growth rates decreased after three days in the presence of UVR and under low nitrate supply. However, these rates were similar when compared with treatments of PAR and PAR + UVR after seven days, with the exception of samples in 0 mM NO3-, indicating that the acclimation after one week's exposure is related to nitrate supply. In conclusion, the lowest negative effect of UVR on photosynthesis and growth rate in high N-supply-grown algae could be explained by the stimulation of photoprotection mechanisms, such as accumulation of MAAs. Photostimulation of MAA accumulation by UVR under high N supply was observed in G. tenuistipitata even after 20 years in culture without the induction of this photomorphogenic light signal.

Toward supramolecular architectures of the anti-HIV drug lamivudine: understanding the effect of the inclusion of water in a hydrochloride form

Two salts of the anti-HIV drug lamivudine, namely, lamivudine hydrochloride and lamivudine hydrochloride monohydrate, were prepared for the first time. Structural relationships and the role of water in crystal assembly and lamivudine conformation were established and allowed for a rational approach to understand how solid state properties could be changed by engineering new salts of the drug.

Suppression of high transverse momentum D mesons in central Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN)=2.76 TeV

The production of the prompt charm mesons D-0, D+, D*(+), and their antiparticles, was measured with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC, at a centre-of-mass energy root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV per nucleon-nucleon collision. The p(t)-differential production yields in the range 2 < p(t) < 16 GeV/c at central rapidity, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.5, were used to calculate the nuclear modification factor R-AA with respect to a proton-proton reference obtained from the cross section measured at root s = 7 TeV and scaled to root s = 2.76 TeV. For the three meson species, R-AA shows a suppression by a factor 3-4, for transverse momenta larger than 5 GeV/c in the 20% most central collisions. The suppression is reduced for peripheral collisions.

J/psi production as a function of charged particle multiplicity in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of the relative J/psi yield as a function of charged particle pseudorapidity density dN(ch)/d eta in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV at the LHC. J/psi particles are detected for p(t) > 0, in the rapidity interval vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 via decay into e(+)e(-), and in the interval 2.5 < y < 4.0 via decay into mu(+)/mu(-) pairs. An approximately linear increase of the J/psi yields normalized to their event average (dN(J/psi)/dy)/(dN(J/psi)/dy) with (dN(ch)/c eta)/(dN(ch)/d eta) is observed in both rapidity ranges, where dN(ch)/d eta is measured within vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1 and p(t) > 0. In the highest multiplicity interval with (dN(ch)/d eta)(bin)) = 24.1, corresponding to four times the minimum bias multiplicity density, an enhancement relative to the minimum bias J/psi yield by a factor of about 5 at 2.5 < y <4 (8 at vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) is observed. Clinical correlates of social adjustment in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Background: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently show poor social adjustment, which has been associated with OCD severity. Little is known about the effects that age at symptom onset, specific OCD symptoms, and psychiatric comorbidities have on social adjustment. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical correlates of social functioning in OCD patients. Methods: Cross-sectional study involving 815 adults with a primary DSM-IV diagnosis of OCD participating in the Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders. Patients were assessed with the Social Adjustment Scale, the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item Short-Form Health Survey, the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, the Dimensional Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale, and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders. Clinical correlates of social adjustment were assessed with generalized linear models with gamma distribution. Results: Poor overall social functioning was associated with greater OCD severity (p = 0.02); hoarding symptoms (p = 0.004); sexual/religious obsessions (p = 0.005); current major depressive disorder (p = 0.004); current post-traumatic stress disorder (p = 0.002); and current eating disorders (p = 0.02). Poor social adjustment was also associated with impaired quality of life. Conclusions: Patients with OCD have poor social functioning in domains related to personal relationships and professional performance. Hoarding symptoms and sexual/religious obsessions seem to have the strongest negative effects on social functioning. Early age at OCD symptom onset seems to be associated with professional and academic underachievement and impairment within the family unit, whereas current psychiatric comorbidity worsen overall social functioning. In comparison with quality of life, social adjustment measures seem to provide a more comprehensive overview of the OCD-related burden. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
