Student notebook of Samuel Dunbar, 1721-1722

This leather-bound volume contains substantial transcriptions copied by Samuel Dunbar from textbooks while he was a student at Harvard in 1721 and 1722. There is a general index to texts at the end of the volume. Dunbar's notebook provides a window into the state of higher education in the eighteenth century and offers a firsthand account of academic life at Harvard College. Notably, he often indicated the number of days spent copying texts into his book.

Account book, ca. 1783-1820

Oblong notebook recording payments by William Bridge to various parties in Chelmsford, Tyngsborough, Groton and Dunstable, in Middlesex County, Massachusetts in the early 19th century. Bridge also records legal duties such as serving writs, and activities such as making hay and slaughtering livestock for or with other individuals which may indicate debt and payment. Elsewhere he records the birthdates of himself and his siblings and the deaths of his parents. Also included is a recipe to cure an ailing horse.

A warrant to seize nine pounds, the equal in property, or the body of Abel Taylor of Stow, to answer charges of debt brought by Nathan Smith of Weston.

An English oration : 1783

Paper notebook containing a handwritten copy of an essay titled "An English Oration" composed by Harrison Gray Otis for the 1783 Harvard Commencement. The essay discusses the American Revolution and begins, “An Omission of the usual appeals..."

Sermon notes compiled by Solomon Prentice, 1724-1726

Leather top-bound volume containing notes kept by Solomon Prentice on sermons he attended between April 1724 and December 17, 1726, while he was an undergraduate at Harvard College. The volume contains one-to-two page entries on specific sermons and provides the biblical text and related questions and conclusions.
