I. Harvard College Papers, 1st series, Volume 1, 1650-1889 (bulk 1650-1765)

The first volume of the College Papers contains original documents dating from 1651 to 1763. It also contains documents dating from 1787, 1817, and 1889, a 1886 photograph of the Charter of 1650, 19th century manscript and 20th century photostat copies of original documents. Five letters in which Lee relays his efforts to obtain a political appointment for Tudor from President James Monroe. He also reports on the activities of Tudor’s brother-in-law, Charles Stewart, and a meeting between John Quincy Adams and Tudor’s brother-in-law, Robert Hallowell Gardiner.

Letters from Benjamin Vaughan,

Six letters in which Vaughan writes about prominent scientists, artists, and musicians, such as violinist Louis Ostinelli and engraver Jacob Perkins. Other topics include social interactions with Tudor’s sisters Delia Tudor Stewart and Emma Tudor Gardiner, and Emma’s husband, Robert Hallowell Gardiner.

Letter from Benjamin Colman to Edward Wigglesworth about John Leverett, 1728 March 4

Benjamin Colman wrote this letter to Edward Wigglesworth on March 4, 1728; it was sent from Colman, in Boston, to Wigglesworth, in Cambridge. The letter concerns their mutual friend, John Leverett, who had died several years before. It appears that Wigglesworth was charged with writing an epitaph for Leverett and had solicited input from Colman. Colman writes of his great admiration for Leverett, praising his "virtue & piety, wisdom & gravity [...] majesty & authority [...] eye & voice, goodness & courtesie."

Account book of Benjamin Gale, 1740-1748 (inclusive)

Ledger containing lists of patient names and payments to Dr. Benjamin Gale (1715-1790) of Killingworth (now Clinton), Connecticut, primarily in 1743. Entries mostly included charges for "sundry" items and visits to patients by Gale, who accepted both cash and payment-in-kind.

Student notebook of Benjamin Waterhouse: 1776

Volume containing notes taken in 1776 by Benjamin Waterhouse (1754-1846) on medical lectures given in Scotland by University of Edinburgh Professor Andrew Duncan (1744-1828). The lectures focused on pathology, with attention given to secretion, absorption, nutrition, excretion, circulation, and respiration. There are also notes on common medicines and their indications and contraindications, such as emetics, cathartics, diaphoretics, and diuretics.

This folder contains two handwritten copies of the accounts between Reverend Andrew Croswell of Boston, and Croswell's executor William Croswell, and Benjamin Huntington, for money collected from Col. Gallup between 1785 and 1787.
