Clerk's Book, A.D. 1742

Handwritten volume containing the Articles, weekly orations, and clerk's journal for the Harvard Latin Society recorded by the club's clerk, Jonathan Mayhew (Harvard AB 1744). The Articles define the Society's mission as to "improve ourselves in the knowledge of the Latin Tongue." The ten articles are signed to by ten members of the classes of 1743 and 1744. The journal which records the weekly meetings from April 14, 1742 through June 17, 1742 includes a transcription of the weekly oration in Latin; the first two entries are also translated into English. On the last page of the book, the "clerk's journal" provides a summary of each meeting with the date, the moderator, and the orators.

Gloucester (including Rockport), Massachusetts, 1831 (Raster Image)

This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Map of Gloucester, Cape Ann : shewing the roads, harbours, rivers, coves, islands & ledges surrounding that important cape, with directions for entering the harbours, from actual survey & observations by John Mason. It was published by Senefelder Lithographic Co. in 1831. Scale [ca. 1:25,500]. Covers the towns of Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts, with special attention on the Cape Ann coastline and harbors. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (in Feet) (Fipszone 2001). All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as roads, drainage, public buildings, schools, churches, cemeteries, industry locations (e.g. mills, factories, mines, etc.), private buildings with names of some property owners, town boundaries and more. Relief is shown by hachures; Harbor depths shown by soundings. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps of Massachusetts from the Harvard Map Collection. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features. The selection represents a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates (1755-1922), scales, and purposes. The digitized selection includes maps of: the state, Massachusetts counties, town surveys, coastal features, real property, parks, cemeteries, railroads, roads, public works projects, etc.

Agreement between John Lowell and John Walton, Thomas Mason, Joseph Holmes, and Samuel Mason to finish the basement of University Hall, 7 June 1814

This contract includes stipulations for finishing the two kitchens, windows, and floors in University Hall by the first of August 1815.

The summary of a course of experimental lectures in natural philosophy by Dr. John Winthrop (manuscript copy), 1772-1774

Notebook with a handwritten copy of lecture summaries for a physics course given by Harvard Professor John Winthrop. The notes were made by Timothy Foster in 1772 and 1773. The volume contains twenty-five lectures with some diagrams.

Observations Medical & Chirurgical by John Perkins, 1724-1774 (inclusive)

Volume kept by Dr. John Perkins (1698-1781) from 1724 to 1774 recording observations on various diseases and medical conditions illustrated with cases from Perkins's practice in Boston, Massachusetts. The cases ranged from epileptic fits, various fevers, and rheumatism to melancholy. His treament methods were standard for the era, mainly prescribing vomits, purges, and spirits, and bleeding patients. Also includes a section listing contradictory opinions among prominent medical writers such as Dutch physician Herman Boerhaave and English physician Thomas Sydenham. An index is located at the end of the volume. Perkins likely began compiling the book in 1765. It contains cases dating from 1724 to 1774.

"Certificate respecting the Rev. John Seccombe," 1795 August

One leaf (pages 301-302) of the August, 1795 issue of Massachusetts Magazine with an editorial regarding the authorship of Father Abbey's Will. The article identifies John Seccombe as the author based on information provided by "Thaddeus Mason, Esq. of Cambridge, the only surviving classmate, and very intimate friend of the Rev. John Seccombe."
