A educação pré-escolar assume um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento das crianças que se quer cada vez mais abrangente e transversal. O nosso estudo tem como objectivo compreender se o desenvolvimento do potencial das crianças em idade pré-escolar está associado à frequência de actividades extracurriculares e ao meio onde residem. Realizou-se com uma amostra de 46 crianças, em dois Jardins de Infância, um de meio urbano e outro rural, nos concelhos de Évora e Viana do Alentejo. Utilizámos os instrumentos de avaliação do Modelo de Spectrum (Krechevsky 2001). A análise de resultados demonstrou que a população urbana apresentou um desenvolvimento do potencial superior à população rural em quase todas as actividades. A concluir destacamos as implicações deste estudo para a educação pré-escolar, nomeadamente no que se refere à sua organização e avaliação. ABSTRACT: The pre-school education plays a key role in the development of children needing to be more comprehensive and cross. Our study aims to understand if the potential development of children in preschool is associated with the frequency of extracurricular activities and the environment in which they reside. Conducted with a sample of 46 children in two kindergartens, one urban and another one rural, in the districts of Évora, Viana do Alentejo. We used the assessment tools of the Spectrum Model (Krechevsky 2001). The analysis results showed that the urban population had a higher potential development of the rural population in almost all activities. Finally, we highlight the implications of this study for pre-school education, particularly as regards their organization and evaluation.

DNA barcoding has the potential to overcome taxonomic challenges in biological community assessments. However, fulfilling that potential requires successful amplification of a large and unbiased portion of the community. In this study, we attempted to identify mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) barcodes from 1024 benthic invertebrate specimens belonging to 54 taxa from low salinity environments of the Mira estuary and Torgal riverside (SW Portugal). Up to 17 primer pairs and several reaction conditions were attempted among specimens from all taxa, with amplification success defined as a single band of approximately 658 bp visualized on a pre-cast agarose gel, starting near the 5' end of the COI gene and suitable for sequencing. Amplification success was achieved for 99.6% of the 54 taxa, though no single primer was successful for more than 88.9% of the taxa. However, only 68.5% of the specimens within these taxa successfully amplified. Inhibition factors resulting from a non-purified DNA extracted and inexistence of species-specific primers for COI were pointed as the main reasons for an unsuccessful amplification. These results suggest that DNA barcoding can be an effective tool for application in low salinity environments where taxa such as chironomids and oligochaetes are challenging for morphological identification. Effective management of invasive fishes depends on the availability of updated information about their distribution and spatial dispersion. Forensic analysis was performed using online and published data on the European catfish, Silurus glanis L., a recent invader in the Tagus catchment (Iberian Peninsula). Eighty records were obtained mainly from anglers’ fora and blogs, and more recently from www.youtube.com. Since the first record in 1998, S. glanis expanded its geographic range by 700 km of river network, occurring mainly in reservoirs and in high-order reaches. Human-mediated and natural dispersal events were identified, with the former occurring during the first years of invasion and involving movements of >50 km. Downstream dispersal directionality was predominant. The analysis of online data from anglers was found to provide useful information on the distribution and dispersal patterns of this non-native fish, and is potentially applicable as a preliminary, exploratory assessment tool for other non-native fishes.
