Problem of Hydroelectric Resources Management: Numerical Approach

In this work we analyze an optimal control problem for a system of two hydroelectric power stations in cascade with reversible turbines. The objective is to optimize the profit of power production while respecting the system’s restrictions. Some of these restrictions translate into state constraints and the cost function is nonconvex. This increases the complexity of the optimal control problem. The problem is solved numerically and two different approaches are adopted. These approaches focus on global optimization techniques (Chen-Burer algorithm) and on a projection estimation refinement method (PERmethod). PERmethod is used as a technique to reduce the dimension of the problem. Results and execution time of the two procedures are compared.

Energy consumption and energy efficiency in olive oil mills: case studies in Portugal and Spain in the frame of TESLA project

TESLA project (Transfering Energy Save Laid on Agroindustry) financed by the European Commission, had the main goals of evaluating the energy consumption and to identify the best available practices to improve energy efficiency in key agro-food sectors, such as the olive oil mills. A general analysis of energy consumptions allowed identifying the partition between electrical and thermal energy (approximately 50%) and the production processes responsible for the higher energy consumptions, as being the in the mill and paste preparation and the phases separation. Some measures for reducing energy waste and for improving energy efficiency were identified and the impact was evaluated by using the TESLA tool developed by Circe and available at the TESLA website.

The 10th European Conference on Information Systems Management is being held at The University of Evora, Portugal on the 8 /9 September 2016. ECISM 2016 received an initial submission of 84 abstracts. After the double blind peer review process 25 aca demic papers, 7 PhD research papers, 3 Masters research paper and 5 work in progress papers have been ac cepted for publication in these Conference Proceedings. These papers represent research from around the world, including Belgium, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, The Netherlands, UK and Vietnam.
