Proposal for Academic Achievement and Permanence of Students in the 7th Grade (1)

This paper analyzes the impact of change processes experienced by many student populations when completing primary education (1st-6th grade) and starting secondary education (7th-11th grade). Based on the research conducted, this paper describes situations and aspects that may result in conditional factors for the student���s adjustment at this level: time-space changes, as well as organizational and dynamic changes that would set the new educational environment and social context in which this new stage will be developed. Such conditional factors that affect learning in incoming students: programs, teaching methodology, learning styles and new evaluation methods will be discussed. As a result of this research, a proposal is presented to facilitate transition from primary to the secondary education. This proposal includes guidelines for awareness and strengthening of pedagogical mediation, which would contribute to the permanence of students from all types of institutions in the education system.�� (1) [Translator���s note: The Costa Rican education system is composed of primary education (1st-6th grade) and secondary education (7th-11th grade).]

Factors Contributing to the Academic Performance of BEI Learners

Se analizan los factores que intervienen en el rendimiento acad��mico de los estudiantes del Bachillerato en la Ense��anza del Ingl��s (BEI) de la Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica). El contexto universitario, el papel de los profesores, la motivaci��n en los estudiantes y los h��bitos de estudio son condiciones para fomentar el ��xito acad��mico. Seg��n los resultados, los aprendientes necesitan ciertas caracter��sticas personales, motivaci��n y metas para tener ��xito en su trabajo acad��mico. Este estudio de caso contribuye a una mejor percepci��n de los factores que influyen en el mejoramiento de las aptitudes de estudio y aprendizaje, as�� como los que intervienen en el logro de las metas acad��micas.This analysis refers to factors contributing to the academic performance of the students majoring in the teaching of English at the Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica). The university context, the professors' role, students' motivation and their study habits are conditions for fostering academic success. The findings indicate that learners need certain personality traits, motivation and goals to succeed in their academic work. This case study provides insight on the factors that influence the enhancement of study skills and leaming, as well as other factors that contribute to the accomplishment of academic goals.

Experiences from the course ���Pedagogical Intervention in Preschool Education���: the vision from the faculty trainers, preschool teachers and students

As part of the educational formation of students from II level of the Associate dregree, from the Pedagogy major with an emphasis on preschool teaching from Universidad Nacional. There is a course named ���Pedagogical Intervention in Early Childhood Education��� which carries out the process of the intensive practicum. In this article you will find a review of the program���s objetives, experiences and challenges, taking the experiences from the academic team, who have guided this process over the past two years, and the point of views from students and preschool teachers.

Construction of the Cognitive Dimension of the Scientific Literacy in the Students through the Costa Rican Biological Sciences Olympics

This research recognizes the cognitive contributions to the students participating in the Third Costa Rican Biological Sciences Olympics that will define the advancement and strengthening in the construction of its conceptual dimension in the scientific literacy.�� This paper is based, mainly, on qualitative approach techniques (ethnographic design:�� case study); however, some data are interpreted through quantitative methodologies (descriptive design with an explanatory and exploratory touch) for the analysis of a sample of 54 high school students, finalists in the category A of the Olympics, through the use of tools such as a documentary study and a survey, in July 2009.�� The information generated was analyzed using elements of inferential and descriptive statistics, figures and histograms.�� It was proved that there is a better cognitive management in the topics assessed, an increase in the students��� academic performance as the tests are applied, a commitment for the academic update supported by the development of several tasks for previous preparation, curriculum contributions unprecedented based on our sample, a consent to optimize student���s knowledge about Biology, which will allow the application of scientific notions to diversify and renew the knowledge, according to what is established in the principles of scientific literacy.

The Dyad School Success/Failure in the Academic Development of the Working Class Women from Mendoza

The notion of academic performance renders account of the results achieved by the students during their school education.�� Internally, there are two opposed phenomena:�� school success and school failure.�� Sociology of education has contributed to the discussion of both notions revealing their social nature closely related to the institutional and socio-cultural contexts in which education is developed.�� This paper is the result of a research project conducted for our doctoral thesis.�� Its purpose is to contribute to enlighten the scopes of this discussion, by analyzing the school development of a group of working class women from Mendoza. We were interested, in the first place, in knowing the reasons why they quit school when they were young girls or adolescents.�� Subsequently, we have approached the opportunities they had to access the system again during their adulthood, the obstacles they had to face and the resources to be able to complete the medium level.
