Abnormal “polymer-in-salt” conduction behavior is observed in a solid electrolyte composed of lithium iodide (LiI) and 3-hydroxypropionitrile (HPN). Based on comprehensive investigations by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman and infrared spectroscopy, this abnormal conduction behavior is attributed to the formation of new ionic associates [Lim +In−]· · ·N C (m> n) and the reinforced hydrogen bonding of I· · ·HO in the electrolyte at high LiI concentrations.

The carousel wind tunnel (CWT) can be a significant tool for the determination of the nature and magnitude of interparticlar forces at threshold of motion. By altering particle and drum surface electrical properties and/or by applying electric potential difference across the inner and outer drums, it should be possible to separate electrostatic effects from other forces of cohesion. Besides particle trajectory and bedform analyses, suggestions for research include particle aggregation in zero and sub-gravity environments, effect of suspension-saltation ratio on soil abrasion, and the effects of shear and shear free turbulence on particle aggregation as applied to evolution of solar nebula.

This paper addresses the problem of scheduling a cane transport system involving both rail transport and road transport, where the road transport operates from several sidings in the rail network. An iterative approach for scheduling the rail transport system has been developed using existing rail transport scheduling tools. The assumption that harvesters serviced by road transport are effectively operating from the rail siding from which their bins are supplied seems a reasonable starting point for the analysis. There is a need to manually modify the schedule to take into account the road transport schedule to ensure that full bins are not collected before the road transport system delivers them back to the rail siding.

While substantial research on intelligent transportation systems has focused on the development of novel wireless communication technologies and protocols, relatively little work has sought to fully exploit proximity-based wireless technologies that passengers actually carry with them today. This paper presents the real-world deployment of a system that exploits public transit bus passengers’ Bluetooth-capable devices to capture and reconstruct micro- and macro-passenger behavior. We present supporting evidence that approximately 12% of passengers already carry Bluetooth-enabled devices and that the data collected on these passengers captures with almost 80 % accuracy the daily fluctuation of actual passengers flows. The paper makes three contributions in terms of understanding passenger behavior: We verify that the length of passenger trips is exponentially bounded, the frequency of passenger trips follows a power law distribution, and the microstructure of the network of passenger movements is polycentric.

Deploying wireless networks in networked control systems (NCSs) has become more and more popular during the last few years. As a typical type of real-time control systems, an NCS is sensitive to long and nondeterministic time delay and packet losses. However, the nature of the wireless channel has the potential to degrade the performance of NCS networks in many aspects, particularly in time delay and packet losses. Transport layer protocols could play an important role in providing both reliable and fast transmission service to fulfill NCS’s real-time transmission requirements. Unfortunately, none of the existing transport protocols, including the Transport Control Protocol (TCP) and the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), was designed for real-time control applications. Moreover, periodic data and sporadic data are two types of real-time data traffic with different priorities in an NCS. Due to the lack of support for prioritized transmission service, the real-time performance for periodic and sporadic data in an NCS network is often degraded significantly, particularly under congested network conditions. To address these problems, a new transport layer protocol called Reliable Real-Time Transport Protocol (RRTTP) is proposed in this thesis. As a UDP-based protocol, RRTTP inherits UDP’s simplicity and fast transmission features. To improve the reliability, a retransmission and an acknowledgement mechanism are designed in RRTTP to compensate for packet losses. They are able to avoid unnecessary retransmission of the out-of-date packets in NCSs, and collisions are unlikely to happen, and small transmission delay can be achieved. Moreover, a prioritized transmission mechanism is also designed in RRTTP to improve the real-time performance of NCS networks under congested traffic conditions. Furthermore, the proposed RRTTP is implemented in the Network Simulator 2 for comprehensive simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that RRTTP outperforms TCP and UDP in terms of real-time transmissions in an NCS over wireless networks.

This paper presents an experimental study to evaluate effect of cumulative lightweight aggregate (LWA) content (including lightweight sand) in concrete [water/cement ratio (w/c) = 0.38] on its water absorption, water permeability, and resistance to chloride-ion penetration. Rapid chloride penetrability test (ASTM C 1202), rapid migration test (NT Build 492), and salt ponding test (AASHTO T 259) were conducted to evaluate the concrete resistance to chloride-ion penetration. The results were compared with those of a cement paste and a control normal weight aggregate concrete (NWAC) with the same w/c and a NWAC (w/c = 0.54) with 28-day compressive strength similar to some of the lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). Results indicate that although the total charge passed, migration coefficient, and diffusion coefficient of the LWAC were not significantly different from those of NWAC with the same w/c of 0.38, resistance of the LWAC to chloride penetration decreased with increase in the cumulative LWA content in the concretes. The water penetration depth under pressure and water sorptivity showed, in general, similar trends. The LWAC with only coarse LWA had similar water sorptivity, water permeability coefficient, and resistance to chloride-ion penetration compared to NWAC with similar w/c. The LWAC had lower water sorptivity, water permeability and higher resistance to chloride-ion penetration than the NWAC with similar 28-day strength but higher w/c. Both the NWAC and LWAC had lower sorptivity and higher resistance to chloride-ion penetration than the cement paste with similar w/c.

This paper presents an experimental study on the resistance of lightweight aggregate concretes to chloride-ion penetration in comparison to that of normal weight concrete of similar w/c. Salt ponding test (based on AASHTO T 259), rapid chloride permeability test (ASTM C 1202) and rapid migration test (NT Build 492) were carried out to evaluate the concrete resistance to the chloride-ion penetration. Results indicate that in general the resistance of the LWAC to the chloride-ion penetration was in the same order as that of NWAC of similar w/c. However, the increase in cumulative LWA volume and the incorporation of finer LWA particles led to higher charge passed, migration coefficient, and diffusion coefficient. Since the LWACs had lower 28-day compressive strength compared with that of the NWAC of similar w/c, the LWACs may have equal or better resistance to the chloride-ion penetration compared with the NWAC of equivalent strength. The trend of the resistance of concretes to chloride-ion penetration determined by the three test methods was reasonably consistent although there were some discrepancies due to different test methods.

To ensure better concrete quality and long-term durability, there has been an increasing focus in recent years on the development of test methods for quality control of concrete. This paper presents a study to evaluate the effect of water accessible porosity and oven-dry unit weight on the resistance of concrete to chloride-ion penetration. Based on the experimental results and regression analyses, empirical relationships of the charge passed (ASTM C 1202) and chloride migration coefficient (NT Build 492) versus the water accessible porosity and oven dry unit weight of the concrete are established. Using basic physical properties of water accessible porosity and oven dry unit weight which can be easily determined, total charge passed and migration coefficient of the concrete can be estimated for quality control and for estimating durability of concrete.

Durability is a significant issue to focus on for newly developed structural lightweight cement composite (ULCC). This paper presents an experimental study to evaluate the resistance of ULCC to water and chloride ion penetration. Chloride penetrability and sorptivity were evaluated for ULCC (unit weight about 1450 kg/m3) and compared with those of a normal weight concrete (NWC), a lightweight aggregate concrete (LWC), and an ultra lightweight composite with proprietary cementitious binder (DB) (unit weight about 1450 kg/m3) at similar compressive strength of about 60 MPa. Rapid chloride penetrability test, rapid migration test, water absorption (sorptivity) test, and water permeability test were conducted on these mixtures. Results indicate that ULCC and DB had comparable performance. Compared with control LWC and NWC at similar strength level, the ULCC and DB mixtures had higher resistance to chloride ion penetration, lower water absorption and virtually impermeable to water penetration.

In the last two decades, there are developments that lead to greater understanding on how and why lightweight concretes (LWC) may achieve similar or higher performance than their normal weight counterparts. The present paper reviews some of these aspects beginning with basic properties such as unit weight, compressive strength and specific strength (strength/ unit weight). Stability and workability of LWC is discussed from rheological perspective. The volumetric stability of LWC in terms of shrinkage and creep are presented with some recent published data. Transport properties of the LWC in terms of sorptivity, water permeability and resistance to chloride-ion penetration are reviewed in comparison with normal weight concrete. Fire resistance of LWC and some current measures used to improve the resistance are discussed. With continual research and development, the performance of LWC is being enhanced to provide new opportunities for practical applications.

Background Surveillance programs and research for acute respiratory infections in remote Australian communities are complicated by difficulties in the storage and transport of frozen samples to urban laboratories for testing. This study assessed the sensitivity of a simple method for transporting nasal swabs from a remote setting for bacterial polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. Methods We sampled every individual who presented to a remote community clinic over a three week period in August at a time of low influenza and no respiratory syncytial virus activity. Two anterior nasal swabs were collected from each participant. The left nare specimen was mailed to the laboratory via routine postal services. The right nare specimen was transported frozen. Testing for six bacterial species was undertaken using real-time PCR. Results One hundred and forty participants were enrolled who contributed 150 study visits and paired specimens for testing. Respiratory illnesses accounted for 10% of the reasons for presentation. Bacteria were identified in 117 (78%) presentations for 110 (79.4%) individuals; Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae were the most common (each identified in 58% of episodes). The overall sensitivity for any bacterium detected in mailed specimens was 82.2% (95% CI 73.6, 88.1) compared to 94.8% (95% CI 89.4, 98.1) for frozen specimens. The sensitivity of the two methods varied by species identified. Conclusion The mailing of unfrozen nasal specimens from remote communities appears to influence the utility of the specimen for bacterial studies, with a loss in sensitivity for the detection of any species overall. Further studies are needed to confirm our finding and to investigate the possible mechanisms of effect. The work presented in this thesis investigates the mathematical modelling of charge transport in electrolyte solutions, within the nanoporous structures of electrochemical devices. We compare two approaches found in the literature, by developing onedimensional transport models based on the Nernst-Planck and Maxwell-Stefan equations. The development of the Nernst-Planck equations relies on the assumption that the solution is infinitely dilute. However, this is typically not the case for the electrolyte solutions found within electrochemical devices. Furthermore, ionic concentrations much higher than those of the bulk concentrations can be obtained near the electrode/electrolyte interfaces due to the development of an electric double layer. Hence, multicomponent interactions which are neglected by the Nernst-Planck equations may become important. The Maxwell-Stefan equations account for these multicomponent interactions, and thus they should provide a more accurate representation of transport in electrolyte solutions. To allow for the effects of the electric double layer in both the Nernst-Planck and Maxwell-Stefan equations, we do not assume local electroneutrality in the solution. Instead, we model the electrostatic potential as a continuously varying function, by way of Poisson’s equation. Importantly, we show that for a ternary electrolyte solution at high interfacial concentrations, the Maxwell-Stefan equations predict behaviour that is not recovered from the Nernst-Planck equations. The main difficulty in the application of the Maxwell-Stefan equations to charge transport in electrolyte solutions is knowledge of the transport parameters. In this work, we apply molecular dynamics simulations to obtain the required diffusivities, and thus we are able to incorporate microscopic behaviour into a continuum scale model. This is important due to the small size scales we are concerned with, as we are still able to retain the computational efficiency of continuum modelling. This approach provides an avenue by which the microscopic behaviour may ultimately be incorporated into a full device-scale model. The one-dimensional Maxwell-Stefan model is extended to two dimensions, representing an important first step for developing a fully-coupled interfacial charge transport model for electrochemical devices. It allows us to begin investigation into ambipolar diffusion effects, where the motion of the ions in the electrolyte is affected by the transport of electrons in the electrode. As we do not consider modelling in the solid phase in this work, this is simulated by applying a time-varying potential to one interface of our two-dimensional computational domain, thus allowing a flow field to develop in the electrolyte. Our model facilitates the observation of the transport of ions near the electrode/electrolyte interface. For the simulations considered in this work, we show that while there is some motion in the direction parallel to the interface, the interfacial coupling is not sufficient for the ions in solution to be "dragged" along the interface for long distances.

An accurate evaluation of the airborne particle dose-response relationship requires detailed measurements of the actual particle concentration levels that people are exposed to, in every microenvironment in which they reside. The aim of this work was to perform an exposure assessment of children in relation to two different aerosol species: ultrafine particles (UFPs) and black carbon (BC). To this purpose, personal exposure measurements, in terms of UFP and BC concentrations, were performed on 103 children aged 8-11 years (10.1 ± 1.1 years) using hand-held particle counters and aethalometers. Simultaneously, a time-activity diary and a portable GPS were used to determine the children’s daily time-activity pattern and estimate their inhaled dose of UFPs and BC. The median concentration to which the study population was exposed was found to be comparable to the high levels typically detected in urban traffic microenvironments, in terms of both particle number (2.2×104 part. cm-3) and BC (3.8 μg m-3) concentrations. Daily inhaled doses were also found to be relatively high and were equal to 3.35×1011 part. day-1 and 3.92×101 μg day-1 for UFPs and BC, respectively. Cooking and using transportation were recognized as the main activities contributing to overall daily exposure, when normalized according to their corresponding time contribution for UFPs and BC, respectively. Therefore, UFPs and BC could represent tracers of children exposure to particulate pollution from indoor cooking activities and transportation microenvironments, respectively.

Graphene-polymer nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention due to their unique properties, such as high thermal conductivity (~3000 W mK-1), mechanical stiffness (~ 1 TPa) and electronic transport properties. Relatively, the thermal performance of graphene-polymer composites has not been well investigated. The major technical challenge is to understand the interfacial thermal transport between graphene nanofiller and polymer matrix at small material length scale. To this end, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the thermal transport in graphene-polyethylene nanocomposite. The influence of functionalization with hydrocarbon chains on the interfacial thermal conductivity was studied, taking into account of the effects of model size and thermal conductivity of graphene. The results are considered to contribute to development of new graphene-polymer nanocomposites with tailored thermal properties.
