A procedure for the evaluation of multiple scattering contributions is described, for deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS) studies using an inverse geometry time-of-flight spectrometer. The accuracy of a Monte Carlo code DINSMS, used to calculate the multiple scattering, is tested by comparison with analytic expressions and with experimental data collected from polythene, polycrystalline graphite and tin samples. It is shown that the Monte Carlo code gives an accurate representation of the measured data and can therefore be used to reliably correct DINS data.

In this paper, the deposition of C-20 fullerenes on a diamond (001)-(2x1) surface and the fabrication of C-20 thin film at 100 K were investigated by a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using the many-body Brenner bond order potential. First, we found that the collision dynamic of a single C-20 fullerene on a diamond surface was strongly dependent on its impact energy. Within the energy range 10-45 eV, the C-20 fullerene chemisorbed on the surface retained its free cage structure. This is consistent with the experimental observation, where it was called the memory effect in "C-20-type" films [P. Melion , Int. J. Mod. B 9, 339 (1995); P. Milani , Cluster Beam Synthesis of Nanostructured Materials (Springer, Berlin, 1999)]. Next, more than one hundred C-20 (10-25 eV) were deposited one after the other onto the surface. The initial growth stage of C-20 thin film was observed to be in the three-dimensional island mode. The randomly deposited C-20 fullerenes stacked on diamond surface and acted as building blocks forming a polymerlike structure. The assembled film was also highly porous due to cluster-cluster interaction. The bond angle distribution and the neighbor-atom-number distribution of the film presented a well-defined local order, which is of sp(3) hybridization character, the same as that of a free C-20 cage. These simulation results are again in good agreement with the experimental observation. Finally, the deposited C-20 film showed high stability even when the temperature was raised up to 1500 K.

Introduction: The accurate identification of tissue electron densities is of great importance for Monte Carlo (MC) dose calculations. When converting patient CT data into a voxelised format suitable for MC simulations, however, it is common to simplify the assignment of electron densities so that the complex tissues existing in the human body are categorized into a few basic types. This study examines the effects that the assignment of tissue types and the calculation of densities can have on the results of MC simulations, for the particular case of a Siemen’s Sensation 4 CT scanner located in a radiotherapy centre where QA measurements are routinely made using 11 tissue types (plus air). Methods: DOSXYZnrc phantoms are generated from CT data, using the CTCREATE user code, with the relationship between Hounsfield units (HU) and density determined via linear interpolation between a series of specified points on the ‘CT-density ramp’ (see Figure 1(a)). Tissue types are assigned according to HU ranges. Each voxel in the DOSXYZnrc phantom therefore has an electron density (electrons/cm3) defined by the product of the mass density (from the HU conversion) and the intrinsic electron density (electrons /gram) (from the material assignment), in that voxel. In this study, we consider the problems of density conversion and material identification separately: the CT-density ramp is simplified by decreasing the number of points which define it from 12 down to 8, 3 and 2; and the material-type-assignment is varied by defining the materials which comprise our test phantom (a Supertech head) as two tissues and bone, two plastics and bone, water only and (as an extreme case) lead only. The effect of these parameters on radiological thickness maps derived from simulated portal images is investigated. Results & Discussion: Increasing the degree of simplification of the CT-density ramp results in an increasing effect on the resulting radiological thickness calculated for the Supertech head phantom. For instance, defining the CT-density ramp using 8 points, instead of 12, results in a maximum radiological thickness change of 0.2 cm, whereas defining the CT-density ramp using only 2 points results in a maximum radiological thickness change of 11.2 cm. Changing the definition of the materials comprising the phantom between water and plastic and tissue results in millimetre-scale changes to the resulting radiological thickness. When the entire phantom is defined as lead, this alteration changes the calculated radiological thickness by a maximum of 9.7 cm. Evidently, the simplification of the CT-density ramp has a greater effect on the resulting radiological thickness map than does the alteration of the assignment of tissue types. Conclusions: It is possible to alter the definitions of the tissue types comprising the phantom (or patient) without substantially altering the results of simulated portal images. However, these images are very sensitive to the accurate identification of the HU-density relationship. When converting data from a patient’s CT into a MC simulation phantom, therefore, all possible care should be taken to accurately reproduce the conversion between HU and mass density, for the specific CT scanner used. The structures of the anhydrous products from the interaction of 2-amino-5-(4-bromophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole with (2-naphthoxy)acetic acid, the 1:1 adduct C8H6BrN3S . C12H10O3 (I) and 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid, the salt C8H7BrN3S+ C7H3N2O6- (II) have been determined. In the adduct (I), a heterodimer is formed through a cyclic hydrogen-bonding motif [graph set R2/2(8)], involving carboxylic acid O-H...N(hetero)and amine N-H...O(carboxyl) interactions. The heterodimers are essentially planar with a thiadiazole to naphthyl ring dihedral angle of 15.9(2)deg. and the intramolecular thiadiazole to phenyl ring angle of 4.7(2)deg. An amine N-H...N(hetero) hydrogen bond between the heterodimers generates a one-dimensional chain structure extending down [001]. Also present are weak benzene-benzene and naphthalene-naphthalene pi-pi stacking interactions down the b axis [minimum ring centroid separation, 3.936(3) Ang.]. With the salt (II), the cation-anion association is also through a cyclic R2/2(8) motif but involving duplex N-H...O(carboxyl) hydrogen bonds, giving a heterodimer which is close to planar [dihedral angles between the thiadiazole ring and the two benzene rings, 5.00(16)deg. (intra) and 7.23(15)deg. (inter)]. A secondary centrosymmetric cyclic N-H...O(carboxyl) hydrogen-bonding association involving the second amino H-atom generates a heterotetramer. Also present in the crystal are weak pi-pi i-\p interactions between thiadiazolium rings [minimum ring centroid separation, 3.936(3)Ang.], as well as a short Br...O(nitro) interaction [3.314(4)Ang.]. The two structures reported here now provide a total of three crystallographically characterized examples of co-crystalline products from the interaction of 2-amino-5-(4-bromophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole with carboxylic acids, of which only one involves proton-transfer.

One limitation of electrospinning stems from the charge build-up that occurs during processing, preventing further fibre deposition and limiting the scaffold overall thickness and hence their end-use in tissue engineering applications targeting large tissue defect repair. To overcome this, we have developed a technique in which thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) and electrospinning are combined. Thick three-dimensional, multilayered composite scaffolds were produced by simply stacking individual polycaprolactone (PCL) microfibrous electrospun discs into a cylindrical holder that was filled with a 3% poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) solution in dimethylsulfoxide (a good solvent for PLGA but a poor one for PCL). The construct was quenched in liquid nitrogen and the solvent removed by leaching out in cold water. This technique enables the fabrication of scaffolds composed principally of electrospun membranes that have no limit to their thickness. The mechanical properties of these scaffolds were assessed under both quasi-static and dynamic conditions. The multilayered composite scaffolds had similar compressive properties to 5% PCL scaffolds fabricated solely by the TIPS methodology. However, tensile tests demonstrated that the multilayered construct outperformed a scaffold made purely by TIPS, highlighting the contribution of the electrospun component of the composite scaffold to enhancing the overall mechanical property slate. Cell studies revealed cell infiltration principally from the scaffold edges under static seeding conditions. This fabrication methodology permits the rapid construction of thick, strong scaffolds from a range of biodegradable polymers often used in tissue engineering, and will be particularly useful when large dimension electrospun scaffolds are required.

We report an efficient solar-light-driven photocatalyst based on three-dimensional nanoporous tungsten trioxide (WO3) films. These films are obtained by anodizing W foils in fluoride-containing electrolytes at room temperature and under low applied voltages with an efficient growth rate of 2 μm h− 1. The maximum thickness of the films is ~ 3 μm that exceeds those of previously reported anodized WO3 films in fluoride-containing electrolytes. By investigating the photocatalytic properties of the films with thicknesses ranging from ~ 0.5 to ~ 3 μm, the optimum thickness of the nanoporous film is found to be ~ 1 μm, which demonstrates an impressive 120% improvement in the photocatalytic performance compared to that of a RF-sputtered nanotextured film with similar weights. We mainly ascribe this to large surface area and smaller bandgap.

Open Disclosure comprises two main components: Clinician Disclosure (CD), an informal process usually conducted by the treating clinician; and Formal Open Disclosure (FOD), a more structured process led by a senior clinician trained as an Open Disclosure Consultant. Training programs for both CD and FOD incorporate interactive role-play based scenarios called ‘simulations’. This section of the Open Disclosure Training Program Handbook provides guidelines and resources for facilitating the simulation components of both Clinician Disclosure and Open Disclosure Consultant training.

Australia is a high-potential country for geothermal power with reserves currently estimated in the tens of millions of petajoules, enough to power the nation for at least 1000 years at current usage. However, these resources are mainly located in isolated arid regions where water is scarce. Therefore, wet cooling systems for geothermal plants in Australia are the least attractive solution and thus air-cooled heat exchangers are preferred. In order to increase the efficiency of such heat exchangers, metal foams have been used. One issue raised by this solution is the fouling caused by dust deposition. In this case, the heat transfer characteristics of the metal foam heat exchanger can dramatically deteriorate. Exploring the particle deposition property in the metal foam exchanger becomes crucial. This paper is a numerical investigation aimed to address this issue. Two dimensional (2D) numerical simulations of a standard one-row tube bundle wrapped with metal foam in cross-flow are performed and highlight preferential particle deposition areas.

Modern cancer research requires physiological, three-dimensional (3-D) cell culture platforms, wherein the physical and chemical characteristics of the extracellular matrix (ECM) can be modified. In this study, gelatine methacrylamide (GelMA)-based hydrogels were characterized and established as in vitro and in vivo spheroid-based models for ovarian cancer, reflecting the advanced disease stage of patients, with accumulation of multicellular spheroids in the tumour fluid (ascites). Polymer concentration (2.5-7% w/v) strongly influenced hydrogel stiffness (0.5±0.2kPa to 9.0±1.8kPa) but had little effect on solute diffusion. The diffusion coefficient of 70kDa fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labelled dextran in 7% GelMA-based hydrogels was only 2.3 times slower compared to water. Hydrogels of medium concentration (5% w/v GelMA) and stiffness (3.4kPa) allowed spheroid formation and high proliferation and metabolic rates. The inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases and consequently ECM degradability reduced spheroid formation and proliferation rates. The incorporation of the ECM components laminin-411 and hyaluronic acid further stimulated spheroid growth within GelMA-based hydrogels. The feasibility of pre-cultured GelMA-based hydrogels as spheroid carriers within an ovarian cancer animal model was proven and led to tumour development and metastasis. These tumours were sensitive to treatment with the anti-cancer drug paclitaxel, but not the integrin antagonist ATN-161. While paclitaxel and its combination with ATN-161 resulted in a treatment response of 33-37.8%, ATN-161 alone had no effect on tumour growth and peritoneal spread. The semi-synthetic biomaterial GelMA combines relevant natural cues with tunable properties, providing an alternative, bioengineered 3-D cancer cell culture in in vitro and in vivo model systems.

This paper reports on an investigation of the flow/chemistry coupling inside a nominally two-dimensional inlet-fuelled scramjet configuration. The experiments were conducted at a freestream Mach number of 7.3 and a total flow enthalpy of 4.3MJ/kg corresponding to a Mach 9.7 flight condition. The phenomenon of radical-farming has been studied in detail using two-dimensional OH* chemiluminescence imaging and emission spectroscopy. High signal levels of excited OH (OH*) were detected behind the first shock reflections inside the combustion chamber upstream of any measurable pressure rise from combustion, which occurred towards the rear of the combustor. The production of OH in the first hot pocket initiates the ignition process and then accelerates the combustion process in the next downstream hot pocket. This was confirmed by numerical simulations of premixed hydrogen/air flow through the scramjet. Chemical kinetics analyses reveal that the ignition process is governed by the interaction between various reaction groups leading to a chainbranching explosion for low mean temperature and pressure combustion flowfields.

The structures of the hydrated sodium salts of 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid {poly[aqua(μ4-4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoato)sodium(I)], [Na(C7H3ClNO4)(H2O)]n, (I)} and 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid {poly[μ-aqua-aqua(μ3-2-amino-4-nitrobenzoato)sodium(I)], [Na(C7H5N2O4)(H2O)2]n, (II)}, and the hydrated potassium salt of 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid {poly[μ-aqua-aqua(μ5-2-amino-4-nitrobenzoato)potassium(I)], [K(C7H5N2O4)(H2O)]n, (III)} have been determined and their complex polymeric structures described. All three structures are stabilized by intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding and strong π–π ring interactions. In the structure of (I), the distorted trigonal bipyrimidal NaO5 coordination polyhedron comprises a monodentate water molecule and four bridging carboxylate O-atom donors, generating a two-dimensional polymeric structure lying parallel to (001). Intra-layer hydrogen-bonding associations and strong inter-ring π–π interactions are present. Structure (II) has a distorted octahedral NaO6 stereochemistry, with four bridging O-atom donors, two from a single carboxylate group and two from a single nitro group and three from the two water molecules, one of which is bridging. Na centres are linked through centrosymmetric four-membered duplex water bridges and through 18-membered duplex head-to-tail ligand bridges. Similar centrosymmetric bridges are found in the structure of (III), and in both (II) and (III) strong inter-ring π–π interactions are found. A two-dimensional layered structure lying parallel to (010) is generated in (II), whereas in (III) the structure is three-dimensional. With (III), the irregular KO7 coordination polyhedron comprises a doubly bridging water molecule, a single bidentate bridging carboxylate O-atom donor and three bridging O-atom donors from the two nitro groups. A three-dimensional structure is generated. These coordination polymer structures are among the few examples of metal complexes of any type with either 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid or 4-nitroanthranilic acid.

Purpose: To investigate the changes in axial length with the combined effect of accommodation and angle of gaze (convergence and downward gaze) over 5 minutes in groups of myopes and emmetropes. Methods: A total of 31 subjects (nine emmetropes, 10 low myopes, and 12 moderate to high myopes) aged from 18 to 31 years were recruited. To measure ocular biometrics in inferonasal gaze with accommodation, an optical biometer (Lenstar LS900) was inclined on a tilt and height adjustable stage, with the subject’s chinrest mounted on a rotary stage to induce various levels of convergence by rotation of the subject’s head in primary or downward gaze. Initially, the subjects performed a distance viewing task in primary gaze for 10 minutes to provide a ‘wash-out’ period for prior visual tasks, and then the subject’s axial length and ocular biometrics were measured in nine different combinations of gaze/accommodation over 5 minutes. These nine sessions for all gaze measurements (i.e. three levels of accommodation 9 three levels of convergence) were completed across 3 days of testing (one accommodation condition on each day). The nine combinations of gaze/accommodation were based on those required to view the centre, right and left edges of a distant TV at 6 m in primary gaze, an intermediate task (i.e. computer at 50 cm in 10° downward gaze) and a near task (i.e. reading A4 page at 20 cm in 20° downward gaze). Subjects were wearing a custom built three-axes head tracker throughout the experiment that monitored subjects’ relative head movements (roll, pitch and yaw) during measurements. Results: A significant increase in axial length occurred with the combined effect of accommodation, convergence and downward gaze (repeated measures ANOVA, p < 0.001), with the greatest axial elongation during the near task in downward gaze with convergence (i.e. downward 20°/inward 33°, with 5 D accommodation) (mean change 33 ± 13 lm, after 5 minutes task) followed by the intermediate task (i.e. downward 10°/inward 25°, with 2 D accommodation) (mean change 14 ± 11 lm, after 5 minutes task).Changes in axial length for the distance task (i.e. primary gaze/9° convergence, with 0.16 D accommodation) were not statistically significant (mean change 4 ± 8 lm, after 5 minutes task, p > 0.05). Moderate to high myopes had a greater change in the axial length (mean change 40 ± 11 lm after 5 minutes of near task) than that of emmetropes (mean change 29 ± 15 lm after 5 minutes of near task) and low myopes (mean change 29 ± 16 lm after 5 minutes of near task) associated with time (p = 0.02) and accommodation by time (p = 0.03). Conclusions: The combination of accommodation, convergence and downward angle has a significant short term effect on axial length over time. The near task in downward gaze with convergence caused a greater change in axial length than the intermediate and distant visual tasks. The greater axial elongation measured in the infero-nasal direction with accommodation is most likely associated with a combination of biomechanical factors such as, extraocular muscle forces and ciliary muscle contraction.

An in vivo murine vascularized chamber model has been shown to generate spontaneous angiogenesis and new tissue formation. This experiment aimed to assess the effects of common biological scaffolds on tissue growth in this model. Either laminin-1, type I collagen, fibrin glue, hyaluronan, or sea sponge was inserted into silicone chambers containing the epigastric artery and vein, one end was sealed with adipose tissue and the other with bone wax, then incubated subcutaneously. After 2, 4, or 6 weeks, tissue from chambers containing collagen I, fibrin glue, hyaluronan, or no added scaffold (control) had small amounts of vascularized connective tissue. Chambers containing sea sponge had moderate connective tissue growth together with a mild "foreign body" inflammatory response. Chambers containing laminin-1, at a concentration 10-fold lower than its concentration in Matrigel™, resulted in a moderate adipogenic response. In summary, (1) biological hydrogels are resorbed and gradually replaced by vascularized connective tissue; (2) sponge-like matrices with large pores support connective tissue growth within the pores and become encapsulated with granulation tissue; (3) laminin-containing scaffolds facilitate adipogenesis. It is concluded that the nature and chemical composition of the scaffold exerts a significant influence on the amount and type of tissue generated in this in vivo chamber model.
