Abstract: Nanostructured titanium dioxide (TiO2) electrodes, prepared by anodization of titanium, are employed to probe the electron-transfer process of cytochrome b5 (cyt b5) by surface-enhanced resonance Raman (SERR) spectroscopy. Concomitant with the increased nanoscopic surface roughness of TiO2, achieved by raising the anodization voltage from 10 to 20 V, the enhancement factor increases from 2.4 to 8.6, which is rationalized by calculations of the electric field enhancement. Cyt b 5 is immobilized on TiO2 under preservation of its native structure but it displays a non-ideal redox behavior due to the limited conductivity of the electrode material. The electron-transfer efficiency which depends on the crystalline phase of TiO2 has to be improved by appropriate doping for applications in bioelectrochemistry. Nanostructured TiO2 electrodes are employed to probe the electron-transfer process of cytochrome b5 by surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy. Concomitant with the increased nanoscopic surface roughness of TiO2, the enhancement factor increases, which can be attributed to the electric field enhancement. This paper describes the fabrication of thin films of porphyrin and metallophthalocyanine derivatives on different substrates for the optochemical detection of HCl gas and electrochemical determination of L-cysteine (CySH). Solid state gas sensor for HCl gas was fabricated by coating meso-substituted porphyrin derivatives on glass slide and examined optochemical sensing of HCl gas. The concentration of gaseous HCl was monitored from the changes in the absorbance of Soret band. Among the different porphyrin derivatives, meso- tetramesitylporphyrin (MTMP) coated film showed excellent sensitivity towards HCl and achieved a detection limit of 0.03ppm HCl. Further, we have studied the self-assembly of 1,8,15,22-tetraaminometallophthalocyanine (4α-MTAPc; M = Co and Ni) from DMF on GC electrode. The CVs for the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4α-CoIITAPc and 4α-NiIITAPc show two pairs of well-defined redox couple corresponding to metal and ring. Using the 4α-CoIITAPc SAM modified electrode, sensitive and selective detection of L-cysteine was demonstrated. Further, the SAM modified electrode also successfully separates the oxidation potentials of AA and CySH with a peak separation of 320mV.

Glassy carbon (GC) electrode modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 1,8,15,22-tetraaminophthalocyanatocobalt(II) (4α-CoIITAPc) was used for the selective and highly sensitive determination of nitric oxide (NO). The SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc was formed on GC electrode by spontaneous adsorption from DMF containing 1 mM 4α-CoIITAPc. The SAM showed two pairs of well-defined redox peaks corresponding to CoIII/CoII and CoIIIPc−1/CoIIIPc−2 in 0.2 M phosphate buffer (PB) solution (pH 2.5). The SAM modified electrode showed excellent electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of nitric oxide (NO) by enhancing its oxidation current with 310 mV less positive potential shift when compared to bare GC electrode. In amperometric measurements, the current response for NO oxidation was linearly increased in the concentration range of 3×10−9 to 30×10−9 M with a detection limit of 1.4×10−10 M (S/N=3). The proposed method showed a better recovery for NO in human blood serum samples.

Spontaneous adsorption of 1,8,15,22-tetraaminophthalocyanatocobalt(II) (4α-CoIITAPc) on glassy carbon (GC) electrode leads to the formation of a stable self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Since the SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc is redox active, its adsorption on GC electrode was followed by cyclic voltammetry. SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc on GC electrode shows two pairs of well-defined redox peaks corresponding to CoIII/CoII and CoIIIPc−1/CoIIIPc−2. The surface coverage (Γ) value, calculated by integrating the charge under CoII oxidation, was used to study the adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics of 4α-CoIITAPc on GC surface. Cyclic voltammetric studies show that the adsorption of 4α-CoIITAPc on GC electrode has reached the saturation coverage (Γs) within 3 h. The Γs value for the SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc on GC electrode was found to be 2.37 × 10−10 mol cm−2. Gibbs free energy (ΔGads) and adsorption rate constant (kad) for the adsorption of 4α-CoIITAPc on GC surface were found to be −16.76 kJ mol−1 and 7.1 M−1 s−1, respectively. The possible mechanism for the self-assembly of 4α-CoIITAPc on GC surface is through the addition of nucleophilic amines to the olefinic bond on the GC surface in addition to a meager contribution from π stacking. The contribution of π stacking was confirmed from the adsorption of unsubstituted phthalocyanatocobalt(II) (CoPc) on GC electrode. Raman spectra for the SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc on carbon surface shows strong stretching and breathing bands of Pc macrocycle, pyrrole ring and isoindole ring. Raman and CV studies suggest that 4α-CoIITAPc is adopting nearly a flat orientation or little bit tilted orientation.

Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 1,8,15,22-tetraaminophthalocyanatocobalt(II) (4α-CoIITAPc) was prepared on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode by spontaneous adsorption from dimethylformamide (DMF) solution containing 4α-CoIITAPc. The SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc formed on ITO electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry, Raman and UV–visible spectroscopic techniques. The cyclic voltammogram (CV) of 4α-CoIITAPc SAM shows two pairs of well-defined redox peaks corresponding to CoIII/CoII and CoIIIPc−1/CoIIIPc−2. The surface coverage (Γ) was calculated by integrating the charge under the anodic wave corresponding to CoII oxidation and it was found to be 2.25 × 10−10 mol cm−2. Raman spectrum obtained for the SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc on ITO surface shows strong stretching and breathing bands of Pc macrocycle, pyrrole ring and isoindole ring. Further, the –NH2 bending mode of vibration was absent for the SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc on ITO surface which indirectly confirmed that all the amino groups of 4α-CoIITAPc are involved in bonding with ITO surface. UV–visible spectrum for the SAM of 4α-CoIITAPc on ITO surface shows an intense B-band, Q-band and n–π∗ transition with slight broadening when compared to that of 4α-CoIITAPc in DMF.

Electropolymerized films of teraaminometallophthalocyanines (MTAPc; M = Ni and Co) with amino groups at α- (4α-MTAPc) and β- (4β-MTAPc) positions were prepared on glassy carbon (GC) and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. It was found that the electropolymerization growth rate of 4α-MTAPc was less than that of 4β-MTAPc prepared under identical conditions. Further, the surface coverage of the polymerized 4β-MTAPc film was greater than that of 4α-MTAPc polymerized film. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–visible spectroscopic studies were carried out for the polymerized films of 4α-NiIITAPc (p-4α-NiIITAPc) and 4β-NiIITAPc (p-4β-NiIITAPc) alone because both Ni(II) and Co(II) polymerized films show similar trend in electropolymerization and surface coverage values. AFM images show that p-4α-NiIITAPc film contains islands and the thickness of this film was nearly three times less than that of p-4β-NiIITAPc. XRD patterns for the two polymerized films reveal that p-4β-NiIITAPc film was relatively more crystalline than p-4α-NiIITAPc film. Further, the compactness of these films was scrutinized from their barrier properties toward [Fe(CN)6]3−/4− redox couple. The differences in the polymerization growth rate of 4α-MTAPc and 4β-MTAPc, and the thicknesses of the resultant polymerized films suggest that unlike 4β-MTAPc one or two amino groups might have not involved in electropolymerization in the case of 4α-MTAPc. Further, the influence of surface coverage on the electrocatalytic properties of the polymerized films was studied by taking p-4β-CoIITAPc and p-4α-CoIITAPc films as examples. The electrocatalytic oxygen reduction current was almost same at both the electrodes suggesting that only the surface species were involved in the electrocatalytic reduction of oxygen.

Self-assembled monomolecular films of 1,8,15,22-tetraaminophthalocyanatocobalt(II) (4α-CoIITAPc) and 2,9,16,23-tetraaminophthalocyanatocobalt(II) (4β-CoIITAPc) on Au surfaces were prepared by spontaneous adsorption from solution. These films were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy. Both the surface coverage (Γ) and intensity of the in-plane stretching bands obtained from Raman studies vary for these monomolecular films, indicating different orientations adopted by them on Au surfaces. The 4α-CoIITAPc-modified electrode exhibits an E1/2 of 0.35 V, while the 4β-CoIITAPc-modified electrode exhibits an E1/2 of 0.19 V, corresponding to the CoII/CoIII redox couple in 0.1 M H2SO4. The Γ estimated from the charge associated with the oxidation of Co(II) gives (2.62 ± 0.10) × 10-11 mol cm-2 for 4α-CoIITAPc and (3.43 ± 0.14) × 10-10 mol cm-2 for 4β-CoIITAPc. In Raman spectral studies, the intensity ratio between in-plane phthalocyanine (Pc) stretching and the Au−N stretching was found to be 6.6 for 4β-CoIITAPc, while it was 1.6 for 4α-CoIITAPc. The obtained lower Γ and intensity ratio values suggest that 4α-CoIITAPc adopts nearly a parallel orientation on the Au surface, while the higher Γ and intensity ratio values suggest that 4β-CoIITAPc adopts a perpendicular orientation. The electrochemical reduction of dioxygen was carried out using these differently oriented Pc's in phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.2). Both the Pc's catalyze the reduction of dioxygen; however, the 4α-CoIITAPc-modified electrode greatly reduces the dioxygen reduction overpotential compared to 4β-CoIITAPc-modified and bare Au electrodes.

This paper demonstrates a renewed procedure for the quantification of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement factors with improved precision. The principle of this method relies on deducting the resonance Raman scattering (RRS) contribution from surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) to end up with the surface enhancement (SERS) effect alone. We employed 1,8,15,22-tetraaminophthalocyanato-cobalt(II) (4α-CoIITAPc), a resonance Raman- and electrochemically redox-active chromophore, as a probe molecule for RRS and SERRS experiments. The number of 4α-CoIITAPc molecules contributing to RRS and SERRS phenomena on plasmon inactive glassy carbon (GC) and plasmon active GC/Au surfaces, respectively, has been precisely estimated by cyclic voltammetry experiments. Furthermore, the SERS substrate enhancement factor (SSEF) quantified by our approach is compared with the traditionally employed methods. We also demonstrate that the present approach of SSEF quantification can be applied for any kind of different SERS substrates by choosing an appropriate laser line and probe molecule.

Biomimetic systems employed for biotechnological applications i.e. as biosensors or bio fuel cells, require initial formation of conducting support/protein complexes with controlled properties. The specific interaction of the protein with the support determines important qualities of the device such as electrical communication, long-term stability and catalytic efficiency. In this respect the system parameters have to be chosen in a way that high protein loading on the support is achieved while protein denaturation upon adsorption is prevented. The conditions on the surface have to be adjusted in such a way that the desired surface reaction of the protein i.e. electron transfer to either the electrode or a second redox partner, is still guaranteed. Hence the choice of support, its functionlisation as well as the right adjustment of solution parameters play a crucial role in the rational design of these support/protein constructs.

Electrochemical aptamer-based (E-AB) sensors represent an emerging class of recently developed sensors. However, numerous of these sensors are limited by a low surface density of electrode-bound redox-oligonucleotides which are used as probe. Here we propose to use the concept of electrochemical current rectification (ECR) for the enhancement of the redox signal of E-AB sensors. Commonly, the probe-DNA performs a change in conformation during target binding and enables a nonrecurring charge transfer between redox-tag and electrode. In our system, the redox-tag of the probe-DNA is continuously replenished by solution-phase redox molecules. A unidirectional electron transfer from electrode via surface-linked redox-tag to the solution-phase redox molecules arises that efficiently amplifies the current response. Using this robust and straight-forward strategy, the developed sensor showed a substantial signal amplification and consequently improved sensitivity with a calculated detection limit of 114 nM for ATP, which was improved by one order of magnitude compared with the amplification-free detection and superior to other previous detection results using enzymes or nanomaterials-based signal amplification. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of an aptamer-based electrochemical biosensor involving electrochemical rectification, which can be presumably transferred to other biomedical sensor systems.

Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) is successfully being used to assess the insulation condition of oil filled power transformers. However, it has to date only been implemented on de-energized transformers, which requires the transformers to be shut down for an extended period which can result in significant costs. To solve this issue, a method of implementing FDS under energized condition is proposed here. A chirp excitation waveform is used to replace the conventional sinusoidal waveform to reduce the measurement time in this method. Investigation of the dielectric response under the influence of a high voltage stress at power frequency is reported based on experimental results. To further understand the insulation ageing process, the geometric capacitance effect is removed to enhance the detection of the ageing signature. This enhancement enables the imaginary part of admittance to be used as a new indicator to assess the ageing status of the insulation.

We fabricated high performance supercapacitors by using all carbon electrodes, with volume energy in the order of 10−3 Whcm−3, comparable to Li-ion batteries, and power densities in the range of 10 Wcm−3, better than laser-scribed-graphene supercapacitors. All-carbon supercapacitor electrodes are made by solution processing and filtering electrochemically-exfoliated graphene sheets mixed with clusters of spontaneously entangled multiwall carbon nanotubes. We maximize the capacitance by using a 1:1 weight ratio of graphene to multi-wall carbon nanotubes and by controlling their packing in the electrode film so as to maximize accessible surface and further enhance the charge collection. This electrode is transferred onto a plastic-paper-supported double-wall carbon nanotube film used as current collector. These all-carbon thin films are combined with plastic paper and gelled electrolyte to produce solid-state bendable thin film supercapacitors. We assembled supercapacitor cells in series in a planar configuration to increase the operating voltage and find that the shape of our supercapacitor film strongly affects its capacitance. An in-line superposition of rectangular sheets is superior to a cross superposition in maintaining high capacitance when subject to fast charge/discharge cycles. The effect is explained by addressing the mechanism of ion diffusion into stacked graphene sheets.

Conventional voltage driven gate drive circuits utilise a resistor to control the switching speed of power MOS-FETs. The gate resistance is adjusted to provide controlled rate of change of load current and voltage. The cascode gate drive configuration has been proposed as an alternative to the conventional resistor-fed gate drive circuit. While cascode drive is broadly understood in the literature the switching characteristics of this topology are not well documented. This paper explores, through both simulation and experimentation, the gate drive parameter space of the cascode gate drive configuration and provides a comparison to the switching characteristics of conventional gate drive.

Several cell-free assays are currently used to quantify and detect the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). All of them have certain limitations, do not provide direct comparison of results and, to date, none of these assays have been acknowledged as the most suitable acellular assay and none has yet been adopted for investigation of potential PM toxicity. These assays include DTT, ascorbic acid, DCFHDA and PFN assays which have been used in measurements of the particles generated from various combustion sources such as diesel engine, wood smoke (or biomass burning) and cigarette smoke, as well as for outdoor measurements. All the probes use different units for expressing redox properties of PM. Also, their reactivity is being triggered by different types of ROS. This limits the direct comparison of the results that are reporting the toxicity of the same aerosol type measured with various probes. This study is evaluating and comparing the various assays in order to develop deeper understanding of their capabilities, selectivity as well as improve understanding of the underlying chemical mechanisms. Various types of layered double hydroxides, a type of clay, were synthesised. They were then electrochemically tested to determine whether the samples would be suitable to store energy as supercapacitors. A manganese aluminium layered double hydroxide was electrochemically tested for the first time and found to have a large capacitance.
