Attachment, fear of intimacy and differentiation of self were examined by means of self-report questionnaires in 158 volunteers, including 99 clients enrolled in addiction treatment programs. As expected, clients (who were undergoing treatment for alcoholism, heroin addiction, amphetamine/cocaine addiction or cannabis abuse) reported higher levels of insecure attachment and fear of intimacy, and lower levels of secure attachment and differentiation of self, compared to controls. Insecure attachment, high fear of intimacy and low self-differentiation appear to characterize clients enrolled in addiction treatment programs. Such characteristics may reflect a predisposition to substance problems, an effect of chronic substance problems, or conceivably both.

Using interview data on LGBT young peoples’ policing experiences, I argue policing practices work to constrain public visibilities of sexual and gender diversity in public spaces. Police actions recounted by LGBT young people suggest the workings of a certain kind of visuality (Mason, 2002) and evidenced more subtle actions that sought to constrain, regulate, and punish public visibilities of sexual and gender diversity. Aligning with the work of sexualities academics and theorists, this paper suggests that, like violence is itself a bodily spectacle from which onlookers come to know things, policing works to subtly constrain public visibilities of “queerness”. Policing interactions with LGBT young people serves the purpose of visibly yet unverifiably (Mason, 2002) regulating displays of sexual and gender diversity in public spaces. The paper concludes noting how police actions are nonetheless visible and therefore make knowable to the public the importance of keeping same sex intimacy invisible in public spaces.

Research has shown that people with a mental illness are an at-risk group for sexually transmitted infections. A programme for preventing risk behaviours for sexually transmitted infections among people with psychiatric disorder was designed and implemented by mental health occupational therapists. This programme used an interactive didactic approach to provide education and awareness of sexual health issues to acute psychiatric inpatients. Twenty-four participants completed a sexual health questionnaire, which was designed for this study, both before and after attending the programme. They had a higher than expected knowledge of sexually transmitted infections and safe sex practices at pre-test. The education programme resulted in a statistically significant but modest increase in sexual health knowledge. These findings indicate that there are benefits in providing sexual health education to clients with a mental illness. Further programme development should be directed towards sexual health decision-making and behaviour change.

Children’s picturebooks dealing with the topic of child sexual abuse first appeared in the early 1980s with the aim of addressing the need for age-appropriate texts to teach sexual abuse prevention concepts and to provide support for young children who may be at risk of or have already experienced sexual abuse. Despite the apparent potential of children’s picturebooks to convey child sexual abuse prevention concepts, very few studies have addressed the topic of child sexual abuse in children’s literature. Based on a larger study of 60 picturebooks about sexual child abuse published over the past 25 years, this paper critically examines eight picturebook representations of the perpetrators of sexual child abuse as a way to understand how potentially dangerous adults are explained to the young readers of these texts.

Background and Objective: A number of bone filling materials containing calcium (Ca++) and phosphate (P) ions have been used in the repair of periodontal bone defects; however, the effect that local release of Ca++ and P ions have on biological reactions is not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of various levels of Ca++ and P ions on the proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and mineralization of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs). Materials and Methods: hPDLCs were obtained using an explant culture method. Defined concentrations and ratios of ionic Ca++ to inorganic P were added to standard culture and osteogenic induction media. The ability of hPDLCs to proliferate in these growth media was assayed using the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8). Cell apoptosis was evaluated by FITC-Annexin V/PI double staining method. Osteogenic differentiation and mineralization were investigated by morphological observations, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and Alizarin red S/von Kossa staining. The mRNA expression of osteogenic related markers was analyzed using a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: Within the ranges of Ca++ and P ions concentrations tested, we observed that increased concentrations of Ca++ and P ions enhanced cell proliferation and formation of mineralized matrix nodules; whereas ALP activity was reduced. The RT-PCR results showed that elevated concentrations of Ca++ and P ions led to a general increase of Runx2 mRNA expression and decreased ALP mRNA expression, but gave no clear trend on OCN mRNA levels. Conclusion: The concentrations and ratios of Ca++ and P ions could significantly influence proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization of hPDLCs. Within the range of concentrations tested, we found that the combination of 9.0 mM Ca++ ions and 4.5 mM P ions were the optimum concentrations for proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization in hPDLCs.
