Among the most disputed issues within the business arena and among academic scholars are which role boards of directors are expected to fulfill, and how they contribute to a company’s success and survival (Monks & Minow, 2008). Recent failures of large corporations worldwide has led corporate governance and strategic management scholars to call for increased board involvement in decision-making (Tricker, 2009) that has paralleled regulators’ requests for higher monitoring and punishments in the case of frauds and misbehaviors (Coffee, 2005)

This paper illustrates the complexity of pointing as it is employed in a design workshop. Using the method of interaction analysis, we argue that pointing is not merely employed to index, locate, or fix reference to an object. It also constitutes a practice for reestablishing intersubjectivity and solving interactional trouble such as misunderstandings or disagreements by virtue of enlisting something as part of the participants’ shared experience. We use this analysis to discuss implications for how such practices might be supported with computer mediation, arguing for a “bricolage” approach to systems development that emphasizes the provision of resources for users to collaboratively negotiate the accomplishment of intersubjectivity ra- ther than systems that try to support pointing as a specific gestural action.

An investigation of the effect of nano particles on natural convection of water based nanofluids contained in an open rectangular cavity is carried out numerically. The flow pattern and heat transfer characteristics are studied for different values of volume fraction in the range 0 0.2 , Rayleigh number in the range 9 1 Ra 10 and the nano particles with different thermo physical properties. It was found that for low Rayleigh numbers, heat transfer exhibits a decreasing trend for increasing values of volume fraction of oxide nanofluids, whereas for higher values of Rayleigh numbers, an increasing trend of heat transfer was observed due to increase in the volume fraction of nanofluids.

Wires of YBa2Cu3O7-x were fabricated by extrusion using a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) binder. As little as 2 wt.% binder was added to an oxide prepared by a novel co-precipitation process, to produce a plastic mass which readily gave continuous extrusion of long lengths of wire in a reproducible fashion. Critical temperatures of 92K were obtained for wires given optimum high-temperature heat treatments. Critical current densities greater than 1000 A cm-1 were measured at 77.3K using heat treatments at around 910°C for 10h. These transport critical current densities, measured on centimeter-long wires, were obtained with microstructures showing a relatively dense and uniform distribution of randomly oriented, small YBa2Cu3O7-x grains. © 1993.

In this paper we give an overview of some very recent work, as well as presenting a new approach, on the stochastic simulation of multi-scaled systems involving chemical reactions. In many biological systems (such as genetic regulation and cellular dynamics) there is a mix between small numbers of key regulatory proteins, and medium and large numbers of molecules. In addition, it is important to be able to follow the trajectories of individual molecules by taking proper account of the randomness inherent in such a system. We describe different types of simulation techniques (including the stochastic simulation algorithm, Poisson Runge-Kutta methods and the balanced Euler method) for treating simulations in the three different reaction regimes: slow, medium and fast. We then review some recent techniques on the treatment of coupled slow and fast reactions for stochastic chemical kinetics and present a new approach which couples the three regimes mentioned above. We then apply this approach to a biologically inspired problem involving the expression and activity of LacZ and LacY proteins in E coli, and conclude with a discussion on the significance of this work. Aims: This paper describes the development of a risk adjustment (RA) model predictive of individual lesion treatment failure in percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) for use in a quality monitoring and improvement program. Methods and results: Prospectively collected data for 3972 consecutive revascularisation procedures (5601 lesions) performed between January 2003 and September 2011 were studied. Data on procedures to September 2009 (n = 3100) were used to identify factors predictive of lesion treatment failure. Factors identified included lesion risk class (p < 0.001), occlusion type (p < 0.001), patient age (p = 0.001), vessel system (p < 0.04), vessel diameter (p < 0.001), unstable angina (p = 0.003) and presence of major cardiac risk factors (p = 0.01). A Bayesian RA model was built using these factors with predictive performance of the model tested on the remaining procedures (area under the receiver operating curve: 0.765, Hosmer–Lemeshow p value: 0.11). Cumulative sum, exponentially weighted moving average and funnel plots were constructed using the RA model and subjectively evaluated. Conclusion: A RA model was developed and applied to SPC monitoring for lesion failure in a PCI database. If linked to appropriate quality improvement governance response protocols, SPC using this RA tool might improve quality control and risk management by identifying variation in performance based on a comparison of observed and expected outcomes.

In this paper we present an examination of the literature on the psychosocial aspects of hepatitis C (HCV), and ask what are the implications for patients and clinicians regarding access to treatment? Hepatitis C (HCV) is a blood-borne communicable disease that was identified in 1988. In Australia, an estimated 217,000 people live with HCV. The virus causes serious liver inflammation, can lead to liver cirrhosis and a small percentage of sufferers will develop hepatocellular carcinoma. Reports about the psychosocial aspects of HCV appeared from around 1994 indicating a similar set of societal responses to people with HIV; stigmatisation and discrimination. A number of calls were made for the establishment of counselling and support services to address the specific mental health needs of people with HCV. We conducted a systematic review of the literature between 2002-2012 about the psychosocial aspects of HCV and its relationship to access to treatment and identified a number of key issues that suggest the anticipated progress in this area has not been made. The majority of people with HCV already experience marginalisation, and the diagnosis of HCV further compounds their marginalisation through stigma and discrimination and complicates clinical decision-making around treatment. We conclude that the need for mental health services that are capable of addressing the complexities of the psychosocial aspects of HCV remains. Concomitantly, primary care clinicians require greater clarity and consistency about the clinical guidelines for HCV to meet the increasing expectations on them to deliver comprehensive patient management within primary care. Contemporary 3D radiotherapy treatment planning relies upon the use of 3D electron density maps derived from computed tomography (CT) scans of patient anatomy, to evaluate the effects of that anatomy on radiation dose distributions. Production of these electron density maps requires that the CT numbers (Hounsfield units) that quantify the attenuation of the x-ray beam by the patient’s anatomy must be reliably converted into electron densities, using a stable calibration relationship. This study investigates the fidelity of electron density assignment in the presence of metallic prostheses and implants.

This paper presents the findings of a pilot study that explores LIS professionals’ experiences of using Twitter as part of their professional practice. The researchers used a qualitative research methodology to undertake the study. Semi-structured interviews and observation were used for data collection. The researchers conducted two in-depth, semi-structured interviews per participant (one pre-observation and one post-observation). The observations were conducted for a period of one week after the first interview. In total, six interviews and three observations were conducted. The researchers used Descriptive Coding and In Vivo Coding methods to analyse the data and found three themes emerged from this study: being connected; building network; and staying informed. This study was undertaken as a part of Master of Information Technology study at QUT. As such, the findings of this research are preliminary in nature. It is expected that the preliminary data of this study can be used to design a much larger and more complex future research project in this area.
