Nanocomposite dielectrics hold a promising future for the next generation of insulation materials because of their excellent physical, chemical, and dielectric properties. In the presented study, we investigate the use of plasma processing technology to further enhance the dielectric performance of epoxy resin/SiO2 nanocomposite materials. The SiO2 nanoparticles are treated with atmospheric-pressure non-equilibrium plasma prior to being added into the epoxy resin host. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results reveal the effects of the plasma process on the surface functional groups of the treated nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results show that the plasma treatment appreciably improves the dispersion uniformity of nanoparticles in the host polymer. With respect to insulation performance, the epoxy/plasma-treated SiO2 specimen shows a 29% longer endurance time than the epoxy/untreated SiO2 nanocomposite under electrical aging. The Weibull plots of the dielectric breakdown field intensity suggest that the breakdown strength of the nanocomposite with the plasma pre-treatment on the nanoparticles is improved by 23.3%.

Nanoparticle contrast agents offer the potential to significantly improve existing methods of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Advantages include biocompatibility, selective accumulation in tumor cells, and reduced toxicity. Considerable research is underway into the use of nanoparticles as enhancement agents for radiation therapy and photodynamic therapy, where they may be used to deliver treatment agents, produce localized enhancements in radiation dose and selectively target tumor cells for localized damage. This paper reviews the current status of nanoparticles for cancer treatment and presents preliminary results of a pilot study investigating titanium dioxide nanoparticles for dual-mode enhancement of computed tomography (CT) imaging and kilovoltage radiation therapy. Although titanium dioxide produced noticeable image contrast enhancement in the CT scans, more sensitive detectors are needed to determine whether the nanoparticles can also produce localized dose enhancement for targeted radiation therapy.

Highly controllablefabrication of the nanowire, nanocone, and mixed nanowire/nanowall arrays of iron oxide (hematite, α-Fe2O3) nanostructures in a simple, environment-friendly process is achieved by exposing the metal foils to low-temperature oxygen plasmas. Very dense forests of thin (≈50 nm) and long (up to several μm) nanowires are grown on the electrically biased substrates, whereas the use of the electrically insulated substrate resulted in the formation of a mixed array of nanowires and nanowalls. The proposed mechanism of the nanostructure growth is supported by the numerical simulations demonstrating the key role of the plasma environment in the growth morphology selection.

We report the catalyst-free synthesis of the arrays of core–shell, ultrathin, size-uniform SiC/AlSiC nanowires on the top of a periodic anodic aluminum oxide template. The nanowires were grown using an environmentally friendly, silane-free process by exposing the silicon supported porous alumina template to CH4 + H2 plasmas. High-resolution scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the nanowires have a single-crystalline core with a diameter of about 10 nm and a thin (1–2 nm) amorphous AlSiC shell. Because of their remarkable length, high aspect ratio, and very high surface area-to-volume ratio, these unique structures are promising for nanoelectronic and nanophotonic applications that require efficient electron emission, light scattering, etc. A mechanism for nanowire growth is proposed based upon the reduction of the alumina template to nanosized metallic aluminum droplets forming between nanopores. The subsequent incorporation of silicon and carbon atoms from the plasma leads to nucleation and growth from the top of the alumina template.

Using a multiple plasma deposition-annealing (MDA) technique, we have fabricated an Au nanoisland-based thin film nanoresistor with a very low temperature coefficient of electrical resistivity in a cryogenic-to-room temperature range of 10 to 300 K. The nanoislanded gold film was deposited on a SiO2/Si wafer (500 nm SiO2 thickness) between two 300 nm thick Au electrodes which were separated by 100 m. A sophisticated selection of the thickness of the nanoislanded gold film, the annealing temperature, as well as the number of deposition/annealing cycles resulted in the fabrication of a nanoresistor with a temperature coefficient of electrical resistivity of 2.1 × 10-3 K-1 and the resistivity deviation not exceeding 2% in a cryogenic-to-room temperature range. We have found that the constant resistivity regime of the nanoisland-based thin film nanoresistor corresponds to a minimized nanoisland activation energy (approximately 0.3 meV). This energy can be minimized by reducing the nearest neighbor distance and increasing the size of the Au nanoislands in the optimized nanoresistor structure. It is shown that the constant resistivity nanoresistor operates in the regime where the thermally activated electron tunneling is compensated by the negative temperature dependence of the metallic-type conductivity of nanoislands. Our results are relevant to the development of commercially viable methods of nanoresistor production for various nanoelectronics-based devices. The proposed MDA technique also provides the opportunity to fabricate large arrays of metallic nanoparticles with controllable size, shapes and inter-nanoparticle gaps.

Multiscale numerical modeling of the species balance and transport in the ionized gas phase and on the nanostructured solid surface complemented by the heat exchange model is used to demonstrate the possibility of minimizing the Gibbs-Thompson effect in low-temperature, low-pressure chemically active plasma-assisted growth of uniform arrays of very thin Si nanowires, impossible otherwise. It is shown that plasma-specific effects drastically shorten and decrease the dispersion of the incubation times for the nucleation of nanowires on non-uniform Au catalyst nanoparticle arrays. The fast nucleation makes it possible to avoid a common problem of small catalyst nanoparticle burying by amorphous silicon. These results explain a multitude of experimental observations on chemically active plasma-assisted Si nanowire growth and can be used for the synthesis of a range of inorganic nanowires for environmental, biomedical, energy conversion, and optoelectronic applications.

The approach to control the elementary processes of plasma–surface interactions to direct the fluxes of energy and matter at nano- and subnanometer scales is introduced. This ability is related to the solution of the grand challenge of directing energy and matter at nanoscales and is critical for the renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies for a sustainable future development. The examples of deterministic synthesis of self-organized arrays of metastable nanostructures in the size range beyond the reach of the present-day nanofabrication are considered to illustrate this possibility. By using precisely controlled and kinetically fast nanoscale transfer of energy and matter under nonequilibrium conditions and harnessing numerous plasma-specific controls of species creation, delivery to the surface, nucleation, and large-scale self-organization of nuclei and nanostructures, the arrays of metastable nanostructures can be created, arranged, stabilized, and further processed to meet the specific requirements of the envisaged applications.

Superhydrophobic amorphous carbon/carbon nanotube nanocomposites are fabricated by plasma immersion ion implantation with carbon nanotube forests as a template. The microstructure of the fabricated nanocomposites shows arrays of carbon nanotubes capped with amorphous carbon nanoparticles. Contact angle measurements show that both advancing and receding angles close to 180° can be achieved on the nanocomposites. The fabrication here does not require patterning of carbon nanotubes or deposition of conformal coatings with low surface energy, which are usually involved in conventional approaches for superhydrophobic surfaces. The relationship between the observed superhydrophobicity and the unique microstructure of the nanocomposites is discussed. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

The formation of arrays of vertically aligned nanotips on a moderately heated (up to 500 degrees C) Si surface exposed to reactive low-temperature radio frequency (RF) Ar+H(2) plasmas is studied. It is demonstrated that the nanotip surface density, aspect ratio and height dispersion strongly depend on the substrate temperature, discharge power, and gas composition. It is shown that nanotips with aspect ratios from 2.0 to 4.0 can only be produced at a higher RF power density (41.7 mW cm(-3)) and a hydrogen content of about 60%, and that larger aspect ratios can be achieved at substrate temperatures of about 300 degrees C. The use of higher (up to 500 degrees C) temperatures leads to a decrease of the aspect ratio but promotes the formation of more uniform arrays with the height dispersion decreasing to 1.5. At lower (approximately 20 mW cm(-3)) RF power density, only semispherical nanodots can be produced. Based on these experimental results, a nanotip formation scenario is proposed suggesting that sputtering, etching, hydrogen termination, and atom/radical re-deposition are the main concurrent mechanisms for the nanostructure formation. Numerical calculations of the ion flux distribution and hydrogen termination profiles can be used to predict the nanotip shapes and are in a good agreement with the experimental results. This approach can be applied to describe the kinetics of low-temperature formation of other nanoscale materials by plasma treatment.

Three-dimensional topography of microscopic ion fluxes in the reactive hydrocarbon-based plasma-aided nanofabrication of ordered arrays of vertically aligned single-crystalline carbon nanotip microemitter structures is simulated by using a Monte Carlo technique. The individual ion trajectories are computed by integrating the ion equations of motion in the electrostatic field created by a biased nanostructured substrate. It is shown that the ion flux focusing onto carbon nanotips is more efficient under the conditions of low potential drop Us across the near-substrate plasma sheath. Under low- Us conditions, the ion current density onto the surface of individual nanotips is higher for higher-aspect-ratio nanotips and can exceed the mean ion current density onto the entire nanopattern in up to approximately five times. This effect becomes less pronounced with increasing the substrate bias, with the mean relative enhancement of the ion current density ξi not exceeding ∼1.7. The value of ξi is higher in denser plasmas and behaves differently with the electron temperature Te depending on the substrate bias. When the substrate bias is low, ξi decreases with Te, with the opposite tendency under higher- Us conditions. The results are relevant to the plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition of ordered large-area nanopatterns of vertically aligned carbon nanotips, nanofibers, and nanopyramidal microemitter structures for flat-panel display applications. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Plasma-assisted synthesis of nanostructures is one of the most precise and effective approaches used in nanodevice fabrication. Here we report on the innovative approach of synthesizing nanostructured cadmium oxide films on Cd substrates using a reactive oxygen plasma-based process. Under certain conditions, the surface morphology features arrays of crystalline CdO nano/micropyramids. These nanostructures grow via unconventional plasma-assisted oxidation of a cadmium foil exposed to inductively coupled plasmas with a narrow range of process parameters. The growth of the CdO pyramidal nanostructures takes place in the solid-liquid-solid phase, with the rates determined by the interaction of plasma-produced oxygen atoms and ions with the surface. It is shown that the size of the pyramidal structures can be effectively controlled by the fluxes of oxygen atoms and ions impinging on the cadmium surface. The unique role of the reactive plasma environment in the controlled synthesis of CdO nanopyramidal structures is discussed as well.

Recently, a variety high-aspect-ratio nanostructures have been grown and profiled for various applications ranging from field emission transistors to gene/drug delivery devices. However, fabricating and processing arrays of these structures and determining how changing certain physical parameters affects the final outcome is quite challenging. We have developed several modules that can be used to simulate the processes of various physical vapour deposition systems from precursor interaction in the gas phase to gas-surface interactions and surface processes. In this paper, multi-scale hybrid numerical simulations are used to study how low-temperature non-equilibrium plasmas can be employed in the processing of high-aspect-ratio structures such that the resulting nanostructures have properties suitable for their eventual device application. We show that whilst using plasma techniques is beneficial in many nanofabrication processes, it is especially useful in making dense arrays of high-aspect-ratio nanostructures.

Cluster ions and charged and neutral nanoparticle concentrations were monitored using a neutral cluster and air ion spectrometer (NAIS) over a period of one year in Brisbane, Australia. The study yielded 242 complete days of usable data, of which particle formation events were observed on 101 days. Small, intermediate and large ion concentrations were evaluated in real time. In the diurnal cycle, small ion concentration was highest during the second half of the night while large ion concentrations were a maximum during the day. The small ion concentration showed a decrease when the large ion concentration increased. Particle formation was generally followed by a peak in the intermediate ion concentration. The rate of increase of intermediate ions was used as the criteria for identifying particle formation events. Such events were followed by a period of growth to larger sizes and usually occurred between 8 am and 2 pm. Particle formation events were found to be related to the wind direction. The gaseous precursors for the production of secondary particles in the urban environment of Brisbane have been shown to be ammonia and sulfuric acid. During these events, the nanoparticle number concentrations in the size range 1.6 to 42 nm, which were normally lower than 1x104 cm-3, often exceeded 5x104 cm-3 with occasional values over 1x105 cm-3. Cluster ions generally occurred in number concentrations between 300 and 600 cm-3 but decreased significantly to about 200 cm-3 during particle formation events. This was accompanied by an increase in the large ion concentration. We calculated the fraction of nanoparticles that were charged and investigated the occurrence of possible overcharging during particle formation events. Overcharging is defined as the condition where the charged fraction of particles is higher than in charge equilibrium. This can occur when cluster ions attach to neutral particles in the atmosphere, giving rise to larger concentrations of charged particles in the short term. Ion-induced nucleation is one of the mechanisms of particle formation in the atmosphere, and overcharging has previously been considered as an indicator of this process. The possible role of ions in particle formation was investigated.

An advanced inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-assisted rf magnetron sputtering deposition method is developed to synthesize regular arrays of pear-shaped ZnO nanodots on a thin SiNx buffer layer pre-deposited onto a silicon substrate. It is shown that the growth of ZnO nanodots obey the cubic root-law behavior. It is also shown that the synthesized ZnO nanodots are highly-uniform, controllable by the experimental parameters, and also feature good structural and photoluminescent properties. These results suggest that this custom-designed ICP-based technique is very effective and highly-promising for the synthesis of property- and size-controllable highly-uniform ZnO nanodots suitable for next-generation light emitting diodes, energy storage, UV nanolasers, and other applications.
