Samples of YBa2Cu3O7-y + 20 mol% Y2BaCuO5 have been melt processed and quenched from temperatures ranging from 975 to 1100°C. The microstructure of the samples have been characterized via a combination of x-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry and wavelength dispersive x-ray spectrometry. BaCuO2 (BC1) and BaCu2O2 (BC2) crystallize from the melt of samples quenched from temperatures between 985 and 1100°C in air. The average yttrium content differs for BC1 and BC2, and it is 4.3 and 5.1 at.%, respectively. Holding times of 20 hours at temperatures above or equal to 1040°C give rise to a dendritic pattern of BC1 surrounded by BC2. The complex changes of the nature of the melt as a function of temperature and time are likely to play a significant role in the mechanism of melt texturing.

High-quality epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films were achieved by a modified off-axis sputtering technique with high deposition rates (3.3 nm/min). The film quality and the deposition rate depended crucially on the target-to-substrate separation. Epitaxial YBCO/NdGaO3(NGO)/YBCO trilayers were successfully grown onto SrTiO3, Y-ZrO2, and LaAlO3 substrates by dc and rf sputtering. The epitaxial relations were found to be [001] YBCO//[001]NGO, [100]YBCO, or [010] YBCO//[110]NGO and [001]YBCO//[110] NGO, [100]YBCO, or [010]YBCO//[001] NGO, where the latter orientation relationship was dominating. Subsequent top YBCO layers grew c axis oriented independently of the two epitaxial orientations of the NGO. The orientation relationships between YBCO and NGO were the same. Auger electron depth profiles and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the interdiffusion at the interface between the YBCO and NGO layers was not strong even at 740°C. The superconducting transition temperatures of the top and bottom YBCO layers were about the same as that of YBCO single layers, i.e., 87-90 K. Scanning electron microscopy of the surface morphologies of the YBCO and the NGO showed that a smaller substrate-target distance resulted in smoother films.

High temperature superconductor precursor billets (feed rods) have been developed for loading into silver tubes. The billets are loaded prior to rolling or drawing operations in PIT wire manufacture. Investigations have shown that wires and tapes prepared from feed rod loaded tubes show enhanced uniformity of electrical transport properties when compared with conventional powder packing, especially in wires drawn to long lengths. Analysis on production feed rods have shown carbon content to be as low as 110 ppm. © 1999 IEEE.

The microstructures of the grain boundaries in epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-δ thin films grown on [001]-tilt yttria-stabilized ZrO2 bicrystal substrates were characterized by TEM and at. force microscopy. The exact boundary plane geometries of the bicrystal substrates were not transferred to the films which instead had wiggling grain boundaries. [on SciFinder(R)]

Superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thin films with various thicknesses from 100 Å to 5000 Å were deposited on (100) SrTiO3 substrates with std. BaF2 coevaporation process. The films had crit. temps. of up to 93 K. The best crit. currents were 1 × 106 A/cm2 at 77 K and 3 × 107 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The crit. current was generally higher for thinner films. Two different etching methods were used to pattern the films for jc measurements: Ar ion etching and EDTA wet etching. The wet etching was found to work well for thicker films (>1000 Å). For the thinner films, the ion etching process was preferred because of the reduced film surface degrdn. [on SciFinder(R)]

Engineered grain boundary Josephson junctions in YBaCuO were formed on bicrystal Y-ZrO2 substrates. Laser deposited films were patterned into micron size microbridges. The authors obsd. a pronounced correlation between superconducting transport properties of grain boundary junctions and the misorientation angle θ between the two halves of the bicrystal. The crit. Josephson current Ic decreased about four orders of magnitude as θ was increased from 0 to 45 degrees. Clear microwave and magnetic field responses were obsd. at 77 K. At this temp., crit. current times normal resistance products, IcRn, of up to 1 mV were measured for low angle grain boundaries, and Shapiro steps were obsd. up to that voltage. DC SQUIDs were fabricated, and best performance at 77 K was obtained for θ = 32° with a 4-μm strip width. To utilize the higher IcRn value of a lower θ, submicron junctions have to be developed. Particles having at least regions of at least one metal oxide having nano-sized grains are produced by providing particles of a material having an initial, nonequiaxed particle shape, prepg. a mixt. of these particles and at last one metal oxide precursor, and treating the mixt. such that the precursor reacts with the particles. The process can be a co-pptn. process, sol-gel synthesis, micro-emulsion method, surfactant-based process, or a process that uses polymers. Complex metal oxide nanoparticles are produced by (a) prepg. a soln. contg. metal cations, (b) mixing the soln. with a surfactant to form micelles within the soln., and (c) heating the micellar liq. to form metal oxide and to remove the surfactant. The formed metal oxide particles have essentially the same morphol. (particle size and shape) as the initial morphol. of the material particles provided. [on SciFinder(R)]

The present invention is directed to catalysts for the conversion of oxides of carbon to methane and/or other hydrocarbons and to precursors of such catalysts. The catalyst precursors include one or more refractory oxides selected from the group consisting of rare earth oxides and rare earth contg. perovskites, the precursor including nickel or nickel cations sufficient for a catalyst obtainable by reducing the precursor to be capable of at least partially reducing an oxide of carbon to a hydrocarbon product. Processes for the prepn. of such catalysts and catalyst precursors are also disclosed, as are processes for the conversion of oxides of carbon to methane and/or other hydrocarbons. [on SciFinder(R)]
