Nanocrystalline silicon carbide (nc-SiC) films are prepared by low-frequency inductively coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition from feedstock gases silane and methane diluted with hydrogen at a substrate temperature of 500 °C. The effect of different hydrogen dilution ratios X [hydrogen flow (sccm) / silane + methane flow (sccm)] on the growth of nc-SiC films is investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At a low hydrogen dilution ratio X, cubic silicon carbide is the main crystal phase; whereas at a high hydrogen dilution ratio X, hexagonal silicon carbide is the main crystal phase. The SiC crystal phase transformation may be explained by the different surface mobility of reactive Si-based and C-based radicals deposited at different hydrogen dilution ratios X. The FTIR and XPS analyses show that the Si-C bonds are the main bonds in the films and elemental composition of SiC is nearly stoichiometric with almost equal share of silicon and carbon atoms.

Experimentally observed optical and photoelectrical spectra of nitrogen-contaminated (unintentionally doped) nano-crystalline CVD diamond films are simulated using semi-empirical adiabatic General Skettrup Model (GSM), which presumes dominant contributions of defect states from sp 3-coordinated intra-granular carbon atoms to intra-band single electron spectrum N(E) of the material. This picture disagrees with a common viewpoint that the N(E) spectrum of the gap states in diamond powders and polycrystalline CVD films mainly originates from π and π* bonds of sp2-coordinated carbon atoms, which are distributed nearly uniformly over outer surfaces and/or interfaces of the diamond grains. The GSM predicts as well strong effect of granular morphology on the density of intra-band defect states in polycrystalline diamonds.

Optical emission of reactive plasma species during the synthesis of functionally graded calcium phosphate-based bioactive films has been investigated. The coatings have been deposited on Ti-6Al-4V orthopedic alloy by co-sputtering of hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium targets in reactive plasmas of Ar + H2O gas mixtures. The species, responsible for the Ca-P-Ti film growth have been non-intrusively monitored in situ by a high-resolution optical emission spectroscopy (OES). It is revealed that the optical emission originating from CaO species dominates throughout the deposition process. The intensities of CaO, PO and CaPO species are strongly affected by variations of the operating pressure, applied RF power, and DC substrate bias. The optical emission intensity (OEI) of reaction species can efficiently be controlled by addition of H2O reactant.

Magnesium alloys are attracting increasing research interests due to their low density, high specific strength and good mechineability and availability as compared to other structural materials. However, the deformation and failure mechanisms of nanocrystalline Mg alloys have not been well understood. In this work, the deformation behavior of nanocrystalline Mg-5% Al alloys was investigated using compression test, with a focus on the effects of grain size. The average grain size of the Mg-Al alloy was changed from 13 µm to 50 nm via mechanical milling. The results showed that grain size had a significant influence on the yield stress and ductility of the Mg alloys, and the materials exhibited increased strain rate sensitivity with decrease of grain size. The deformation mechanisms were also strongly dependent with the grain sizes.

The performance and electron recombination kinetics of dye-sensitized solar cells based on TiO2 films consisting of one-dimensional nanorod arrays (NR-DSSCs) which are sensitized with dye N719, C218 and D205 respectively have been studied. It has been found that the best efficiency is obtained with the dye C218 based NR-DSSCs, benefiting from a 40% higher short-circuit photocurrent density. However, the open circuit photovoltage of the N719 based cell is 40 mV higher than that of the organic dye C218 and D205 based devices. Investigation of the electron recombination kinetics of the NR-DSSCs has revealed that the effective electron lifetime, τn, of the N719 based NR-DSSC is the lowest whereas the τn of the C218 based NR-DSSC is the highest among the three dyes. The higher Voc with the N719 based NR-DSSC is originated from the more negative energy level of the conduction band of the TiO2 film. In addition, in comparison to the DSSCs with conventional nanocrystalline particles based TiO2 films, the NR-DSSCs have shown over two orders of magnitude higher τn when employing N719 as the sensitizer. Nevertheless, the τn of the DSSCs with the C218 based nanorod arrays is only ten-fold higher than the that of the nanoparticles based devices. The remarkable characteristic of the dye C218 in suppressing the electron recombination of DSSCs is discussed.

Chemical treatments of kaolins to produce nanocrystalline or "X-ray amorphous", stable aluminosilicates with variable - but reproducible - types of micro- and meso-porosity have been developed. These materials show cation exchange capacities and surface area values significantly higher (ranging from 10x to 100x) than kaolin and show good acid resistance to pH~3.0. The combination of these properties offers strong potential for many new applications of kaolin-derived materials in large worldwide markets such as environmental remediation and catalysis. Kaolin amorphous derivative (KAD) is well-suited to removal of many toxic metals down to ppb range from acid mine drainage. Engineering development trials of the KAD manufacturing process and the utilisation of KAD in polluted waters such as acid mine drainage indicates that scale-up from bench-scale is not a barrier to market entry.

Nanostructured high strength Mg-5%Al-x%Nd alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying. Microstructural characterization reveled average crystalline size to be about 30 nm after mechanical alloying while it increased to about 90 nm after sintering and extrusion. Mechanical properties showed increase in 0.2% yield stress, ultimate tensile strength was attributed to reduction in gain size as well as to the enhanced diffusion after mechanical activation. Although ultra high yield stress was observed from the specimen with 5% Nd, its ductility was reduced to about 1.6%.

Despite major advances in the fabrication and characterization of SiC and related materials, there has been no convincing evidence of the synthesis of nanodevice-quality nanoislanded SiC films at low, ultralarge scale integration technology-compatible process temperatures. The authors report on a low-temperature (400 °C) plasma-assisted rf magnetron sputtering deposition of high-quality nanocrystalline SiC films made of uniform-size nanoislands that almost completely cover the Si(100) surface. These nanoislands are chemically pure, highly stoichiometric, have a typical size of 20-35 nm, and contain small (∼5 nm) nanocrystalline inclusions. The properties of nanocrystalline SiC films can be effectively controlled by the plasma parameters.

Silicon thin films were synthesized simultaneously on single-crystal silicon and glass substrates by lowpressure, thermally nonequilibrium, high-density inductively coupled plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition from the silane precursor gas without any additional hydrogen dilution in a broad range of substrate temperatures from 100 to 500 °C. The effect of the substrate temperature on the morphological, structural and optical properties of the synthesized silicon thin films is systematically studied by X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It is shown that the formation of nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) occurs when the substrate temperature is higher than 200 °C and that all the deposited nc-Si films have a preferential growth along the (111) direction. However, the mean grain size of the (111) orientation slightly and gradually decreases while the mean grain size of the (220) orientation shows a monotonous increase with the increased substrate temperature from 200 to 500 °C. It is also found that the crystal volume fraction of the synthesized nc-Si thin films has a maximum value of ∼69.1% at a substrate temperature of 300 rather than 500 °C. This rather unexpected result is interpreted through the interplay of thermokinetic surface diffusion and hydrogen termination effects. Furthermore, we have also shown that with the increased substrate temperature from 100 to 500 °C, the optical bandgap is reduced while the growth rates tend to increase. The maximum rates of change of the optical bandgap and the growth rates occur when the substrate temperature is increased from 400 to 500 °C. These results are highly relevant to the development of photovoltaic thin-film solar cells, thin-film transistors, and flat-panel displays.

Nanocrystalline silicon thin films were deposited on single-crystal silicon and glass substrates simultaneously by inductively coupled plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition from the reactive silane reactant gas diluted with hydrogen at a substrate temperature of 200 °C. The effect of hydrogen dilution ratio X (X is defined as the flow rate ratio of hydrogen to silane gas), ranging from 1 to 20, on the structural and optical properties of the deposited films, is extensively investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Our experimental results reveal that, with the increase of the hydrogen dilution ratio X, the deposition rate Rd and hydrogen content CH are reduced while the crystalline fraction Fc, mean grain size δ and optical bandgap ETauc are increased. In comparison with other plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition methods of nanocrystalline silicon films where a very high hydrogen dilution ratio X is routinely required (e.g. X > 16), we have achieved nanocrystalline silicon films at a very low hydrogen dilution ratio of 1, featuring a high deposition rate of 1.57 nm/s, a high crystalline fraction of 67.1%, a very low hydrogen content of 4.4 at.%, an optical bandgap of 1.89 eV, and an almost vertically aligned columnar structure with a mean grain size of approximately 19 nm. We have also shown that a sufficient amount of atomic hydrogen on the growth surface essential for the formation of nanocrystalline silicon is obtained through highly-effective dissociation of silane and hydrogen molecules in the high-density inductively coupled plasmas. © 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

In this work, we report a plasma-based synthesis of nanodevice-grade nc-3C-SiC films, with very high growth rates (7-9 nm min-1) at low and ULSI technology-compatible process temperatures (400-550 °C), featuring: (i) high nanocrystalline fraction (67% at 550 °C); (ii) good chemical purity; (iii) excellent stoichiometry throughout the entire film; (iv) wide optical band gap (3.22-3.71 eV); (v) refractive index close to that of single-crystalline 3C-SiC, and; (vi) clear, uniform, and defect-free Si-SiC interface. The counter-intuitive low SiC hydrogenation in a H2-rich plasma process is explained by hydrogen atom desorption-mediated crystallization.

This contribution sheds light on the role of crystal size and phase composition in inducing biomimetic apatite growth on the surface of nanostructured titania films synthesized by reactive magnetron sputtering of Ti targets in Ar+O2 plasmas. Unlike most existing techniques, this method enables one to deposit highly crystalline titania films with a wide range of phase composition and nanocrystal size, without any substrate heating or postannealing. Moreover, by using this dry plasma-based method one can avoid surface hydroxylation at the deposition stage, almost inevitable in wet chemical processes. Results of this work show that high phase purity and optimum crystal size appear to be the essential requirement for efficient apatite formation on magnetron plasma-fabricated bioactive titania coatings. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
