Vertical line extensions, both step-up and step-down, are common occurrence in consumer products. For example, Timex recently launched its luxury high-end Valentino line. On the other hand, many companies use downscale extensions to increase the overall sales volume. For instance, a number of luxury watch brands recently introduced watch collections with lower price points, like TAG Heur’s affordable watch the Aquaracer Calibre 5. Previous literature on vertical extensions has investigated how number of products in the line (Dacin and Smith 1994), the direction of the extension, brand concept (Kim, Lavack, and Smith 2001), and perceived risk (Lei, de Ruyter, and Wetzels 2008) affect extensions’ evaluation. Common to this literature is the use of models based on adaptation-level theory, which states that all relevant price information is integrated into a single prototype value and used in consumer judgments of price (Helson 1947; Mazumdar, Raj, and Sinha 2005). In the current research we argue that, while adaptation-level theory can be viewed as a useful simplification to understanding consumers’ evaluations, it misses out important contextual influences caused by a brand’s price range. Drawing on research on range-frequency theory (Mellers and Cooke 1994; Parducci 1965) we investigate the effects of price point distance and parent brand’s price range on evaluations of vertical extensions. Our reasoning leads to two important predictions that we test in a series of three experiments...

Sans Faute (without fail) considers how technology has influenced Chinese society, culture and practice. The exhibition seeks to reveal a shared language between Western and Chinese contexts that exists through employing technology as a universal creative meeting point. The pervasive impact of the current digital landscape has been widely recognised, embraced and continues to influence many aspects of Chinese lives. The significance of these shifting contexts on contemporary art is explored in Sans Faute. Through the presentation of a range of video installations, the exhibition aims to initiate rigorous and critical engagement with these provocative works that challenge traditional ideologies to discover emergent ideas. Featuring works by eight artists from mainland China, Sans Faute is an exploration of different attitudes collected together to provide a complete picture of how these artists build a new iconic imagery. "The works of these artists present a younger generation's thinking of the reality of contemporary China through their own emotional and individual life experience," says Stephen Danzig, IDAprojects director. "We are currently witnessing an amazing re-identification in so many elements that make up China's social fabric - none more so than what's happening in the arts currently. You only need to see what's happening in Beijing to realise the pace of change." Sans Faute has been supported by QUT Confucius Institute.

This paper presents a numerical model for understanding particle transport and deposition in metal foam heat exchangers. Two-dimensional steady and unsteady numerical simulations of a standard single row metal foam-wrapped tube bundle are performed for different particle size distributions, i.e. uniform and normal distributions. Effects of different particle sizes and fluid inlet velocities on the overall particle transport inside and outside the foam layer are also investigated. It was noted that the simplification made in the previously-published numerical works in the literature, e.g. uniform particle deposition in the foam, is not necessarily accurate at least for the cases considered here. The results highlight the preferential particle deposition areas both along the tube walls and inside the foam using a developed particle deposition likelihood matrix. This likelihood matrix is developed based on three criteria being particle local velocity, time spent in the foam, and volume fraction. It was noted that the particles tend to deposit near both front and rear stagnation points. The former is explained by the higher momentum and direct exposure of the particles to the foam while the latter only accommodate small particles which can be entrained in the recirculation region formed behind the foam-wrapped tubes.

FRUSTRATED residents of Grantham, the Lockyer Valley township devastated by Queensland's deadly summer floods, are demanding that the commission of inquiry into the disaster investigate whether an earth wall around a sand quarry helped cause the "inland tsunami" that killed 12 people and destroyed scores of homes.

Queensland’s Surat Basin has the third largest energy resource in the world — with vast coal seam gas and coal reserves — but farm groups are warning that mining areas, which are prime farm land, risk catastrophic environmental damage to food-producing areas. Mining development is moving very quickly with 36,000 wells due to be sunk in the next few years. A Senate inquiry into the impacts of mining in the Murray-Darling Basin heard evidence from farm and mining industry representatives in Oakey on the Darling Downs yesterday.

This chapter offers three insights into the relationship between curriculum decision making, positive school climate, and academic achievement for same-sex attracted (SSA) students, highlighting the need for students to be offered more than heteronormative narratives and silence on issues of sexuality in the official school curriculum. The authors firstly provide a review of research and report on findings of a doctoral study (Mikulsky, 2007) explaining the impact of SSA students’ perceptions of school climate on their motivation and academic self-concept. Situating the work in the context of the Australian Curriculum for English and associated classroom texts, the dominant discourse of ‘straight, white female’ heroines as exemplified in the globally popular young adult novel The hunger games and other texts popular with Australian students are critiqued, with an argument made for expanding notions of what it means to ‘attend to’ gender and sexuality through textual choice and critical pedagogy. The authors show how texts that feature LGBTQ characters and storylines continue to be marginalized and constructed as taboo and demonstrate how curricular choices can and do impact academic outcomes for marginalized students. Issues of gender and sexuality are framed as a cross-curriculum imperative, with recommendations made for the explicit inclusion of materials exploring gender and sexuality in the official curriculum of all key learning areas.
