Multiscale, multiphase numerical modeling is used to explain the mechanisms of effective control of chirality distributions of single-walled carbon nanotubes in direct plasma growth and suggest effective approaches to further improvement. The model includes an unprecedented combination of the plasma sheath, ion/radical transport, species creation/loss, plasma–surface interaction, heat transfer, surface/bulk diffusion, graphene layer nucleation, and bending/lift-off modules. It is shown that the constructive interplay between the plasma and the Gibbs–Thomson effect can lead to the effective nucleation and lift-off of small graphene layers on small metal catalyst nanoparticles. As a result, much thinner nanotubes with narrower chirality distributions can nucleate at much lower process temperatures and pressures compared to thermal CVD. This approach is validated by a host of experimental results, substantially reduces the amounts of energy and atomic matter required for the nanotube growth, and can be extended to other nanoscale structures and materials systems, thereby nearing the ultimate goal of energy- and matter-efficient nanotechnology.

This review paper presents historical perspectives, recent advances and future directions in the multidisciplinary research field of plasma nanoscience. The current status and future challenges are presented using a three-dimensional framework. The first and the largest dimension covers the most important classes of nanoscale objects (nanostructures, nanofeatures and nanoassemblies/nanoarchitectures) and materials systems, namely carbon nanotubes, nanofibres, graphene, graphene nanoribbons, graphene nanoflakes, nanodiamond and related carbon-based nanostructures; metal, silicon and other inorganic nanoparticles and nanostructures; soft organic nanomaterials; nano-biomaterials; biological objects and nanoscale plasma etching. In the second dimension, we discuss the most common types of plasmas and plasma reactors used in nanoscale plasma synthesis and processing. These include low-temperature non-equilibrium plasmas at low and high pressures, thermal plasmas, high-pressure microplasmas, plasmas in liquids and plasma–liquid interactions, high-energy-density plasmas, and ionized physical vapour deposition as well as some other plasma-enhanced nanofabrication techniques. In the third dimension, we outline some of the 'Grand Science Challenges' and 'Grand Socio-economic Challenges' to which significant contributions from plasma nanoscience-related research can be expected in the near future. The urgent need for a stronger focus on practical, outcome-oriented research to tackle the grand challenges is emphasized and concisely formulated as from controlled complexity to practical simplicity in solving grand challenges.

Quantum cascade laserabsorption spectroscopy was used to measure the absolute concentration of acetylene in situ during the nanoparticle growth in Ar + C2H2 RF plasmas. It is demonstrated that the nanoparticle growth exhibits a periodical behavior, with the growth cycle period strongly dependent on the initial acetylene concentration in the chamber. Being 300 s at 7.5% of acetylene in the gas mixture, the growth cycle period decreases with the acetylene concentration increasing; the growth eventually disappears when the acetylene concentration exceeds 32%. During the nanoparticle growth, the acetylene concentration is small and does not exceed 4.2% at radio frequency (RF) power of 4 W, and 0.5% at RF power of 20 W. An injection of a single acetylene pulse into the discharge also results in the nanoparticlenucleation and growth. The absorption spectroscopy technique was found to be very effective for the time-resolved measurement of the hydrocarbon content in nanoparticle-generatingplasmas.

The possibility to control the electric resistivity-temperature dependence of the nanosized resistive components made using hierarchical multilevel arrays of self-assembled gold nanoparticles prepared by multiple deposition/annealing is demonstrated. It is experimentally shown that the hierarchical three-level patterns, where the nanoparticles of sizes ranging from several nanometers to several tens of nanometer play a competitive roles in the electric conductivity, demonstrate sharp changes in the activation energy. These patterns can be used for the precise tuning of the resistivity-temperature behavior of nanoelectronic components.

The formation of long self-organized carbon connections (where the length is much greater than the diameter) between Ag nanoparticles on a Si(1 0 0) surface in atmospheric pressure Ar + CH4 microplasmas is demonstrated. A growth scenario explaining the connection nucleation and growth is proposed, and this is supported by numerical simulations which reveal that the electric field pattern around the growing connections affects the surface diffusion of carbon adatoms, the main driving force for the observed self-organization. Results suggest that the microplasma-generated surface charges can be used as effective controls for the self-organized formation of complex carbon-based nano-networks for integrated nanodevices.

In this paper, we report on the fabrication of Mo-oxide nanostructures and nanoarchitectures using an atmospheric-microplasma (AMP) system. This AMP system shows a high degree of flexibility and is capable of producing several different nanostructures and nanoarchitectures by varying the process parameters. The low-cost and simplicity of the process are important characteristics for nanomanufacturing, and AMPs offer such advantages. In addition, AMPs have shown the ability of promoting self-organization of nanostructures. © 2009 IEEE.

Nonlinear effects associated with density modulation caused by wave-induced ionization in magnetized plasmas were studied. The ionizing surface waves propagate at the interface between the plasma and a metallic surface. It is shown that the ionization nonlinearity can be important for typical experimental conditions.

Luminescent ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized on silicon and quartz substrates under extremely non-equilibrium conditions of energetic ion condensation during the post-focus phase in a dense plasma focus (DPF) device. Ar+, O+, Zn+ and ZnO+ ions are generated as a result of interaction of hot and dense argon plasma focus with the surfaces of ZnO pellets placed at the anode. It is found that the sizes, structural and photoluminescence (PL) properties of the ZnO nanoparticles appear to be quite different on Si(1 0 0) and quartz substrates. The results of x-ray diffractometry and atomic force microscopy show that the ZnO nanoparticles are crystalline and range in size from 5-7 nm on Si(1 0 0) substrates to 10-38 nm on quartz substrates. Room-temperature PL studies reveal strong peaks related to excitonic bands and defects for the ZnO nanoparticles deposited on Si (1 0 0), whereas the excitonic bands are not excited in the quartz substrate case. Raman studies indicate the presence of E2 (high) mode for ZnO nanoparticles deposited on Si(1 0 0).

An innovative approach to fabricate tailored Mo-oxide nanostructures and composite nanoarchitectures using atmospheric microplasmas sustained in a gap between a Mo wire and a Si substrate is reported. It is shown that at smaller gap distances spherical nanoparticles are produced whereas sheet-like structures emerge when the gap is increased. When the wire is consumed continuously, it is possible to synthesize complex nanoarchitectures made of nanoparticles decorated with nanosheets. These processes can be applied for other metal and metal oxide materials and suggest a way to improve control and predictability, common problems in high-yield nanofabrication.

A theoretical model of a large-area planar plasma producer based on surface wave (SW) propagation in a plasma-metal structure with a dielectric sheath is presented. The SW which produces and sustains the microwave gas discharge in the planar structure propagates along an external magnetic field and possesses an eigenfrequency within the range between electron cyclotron and electron plasma frequencies. The spatial distributions of the produced plasma density, electromagnetic fields, energy flow density, phase velocity and reverse skin depth of the SW are obtained analytically and numerically.

The kinetics of saturation of Ni catalyst nanoparticle patterns of the three different degrees of order, used as a model for the growth of carbon nanotips on Si, is investigated numerically using a complex model that involves surface diffusion and ion motion equations. It is revealed that Ni catalyst patterns of different degrees of order, with Ni nanoparticle sizes up to 12.5 nm, exhibit different kinetics of saturation with carbon on the Si surface. It is shown that in the cases examined (surface coverage in the range of 1-50%, highly disordered Ni patterns) the relative pattern saturation factor calculated as the ratio of average incubation times for the processes conducted in the neutral and ionized gas environments reaches 14 and 3.4 for Ni nanoparticles of 2.5 and 12.5 nm, respectively. In the highly ordered Ni patterns, the relative pattern saturation factor reaches 3 for nanoparticles of 2.5 nm and 2.1 for nanoparticles of 12.5 nm. Thus, more simultaneous saturation of Ni catalyst nanoparticles of sizes in the range up to 12.5 nm, deposited on the Si substrate, can be achieved in the low-temperature plasma environment than with the neutral gas-based process.

The growth of carbon nanocone arrays on metal catalyst particles by deposition from a low-temperature plasma is studied by multiscale Monte Carlo/surface diffusion numerical simulation. It is demonstrated that the variation in the degree of ionization of the carbon flux provides an effective control of the growth kinetics of the carbon nanocones, and leads to the formation of more uniform arrays of nanostructures. In the case of zero degree of ionization (neutral gas process), a width of the distribution of nanocone heights reaches 360 nm with the nanocone mean height of 150 nm. When the carbon flux of 75% ionization is used, the width of the distribution of nanocone heights decreases to 100 nm, i.e., by a factor of 3.6. A higher degree of ionization leads to a better uniformity of the metal catalyst saturation and the nanocone growth, thus contributing to the formation of more height-uniform arrays of carbon nanostructures.

The excitation of surface plasmon-polariton waves propagating across an external magnetic field (Voigt geometry) in a semiconductor-metal structure by means of the attenuated total reflection method is investigated. The phase matching conditions for the surface waves excitation in the Kretchmann configuration are derived and analyzed. The effect of different nonlinearities on the excitation of the surface waves is studied as well.
