The alunite supergroup of minerals is a large hydroxy-sulfate mineral group, which has seen renewed interest following their discovery on Mars. Numerous reviews exist concerning nomenclature, formation, and natural occurrence of this mineral group. Sulfate minerals in general are widely studied and their vibrational spectra are well characterized. However, no specific review concerning alunite and jarosite spectroscopy and crystal structure has been forthcoming. This review focuses on the controversial aspects of the crystal structure and vibrational spectroscopy of jarosite and alunite minerals. Inconsistencies regarding band assignments especially in the 1000–400 cm−1 region plague these two mineral groups and result in different band assignments among the various spectroscopic studies. There are significant crystallographic and magnetic structure ambiguities with regards to ammonium and hydronium end-members, namely, the geometry these two ions assume in the structure and the fact that hydronium jarosite is a spin glass. It was also found that the synthetic causes for the super cell in plumbojarosite, minamiite, huangite, and walthierite are not known.

Homo-and heteronuclear meso,meso-(E)-ethene-1,2-diyl-linked diporphyrins have been prepared by the Suzuki coupling of porphyrinylboronates and iodovinylporphyrins. Combinations comprising 5,10,15-triphenylporphyrin (TriPP) on both ends of the ethene-1,2-diyl bridge M 210 (M 2=H 2/Ni, Ni 2, Ni/Zn, H 4, H 2Zn, Zn 2) and 5,15-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrinato-nickel(II) on one end and H 2, Ni, and ZnTriPP on the other (M 211), enable the first studies of this class of compounds possessing intrinsic polarity. The compounds were characterized by electronic absorption and steady state emission spectra, 1H NMR spectra, and for the Ni 2 bis(TriPP) complex Ni 210, single crystal X-ray structure determination. The crystal structure shows ruffled distortions of the porphyrin rings, typical of Ni II porphyrins, and the (E)-C 2H 2 bridge makes a dihedral angle of 50° with the mean planes of the macrocycles. The result is a stepped parallel arrangement of the porphyrin rings. The dihedral angles in the solid state reflect the interplay of steric and electronic effects of the bridge on interporphyrin communication. The emission spectra in particular, suggest energy transfer across the bridge is fast in conformations in which the bridge is nearly coplanar with the rings. Comparisons of the fluorescence behaviour of H 410 and H 2Ni10 show strong quenching of the free base fluorescence when the complex is excited at the lower energy component of the Soret band, a feature associated in the literature with more planar conformations. TDDFT calculations on the gas-phase optimized geometry of Ni 210 reproduce the features of the experimental electronic absorption spectrum within 0.1 eV. © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 1,2-Bis[10,15-di(3,5-di-tert-butyl)phenylporphyrinatonickel(II)-5-yl]diazene was synthesised via copper catalysed coupling of aminated nickel(II) 5,10-diarylporphyrin (“corner porphyrin”) and its X-ray crystal structure was determined. Two different crystals yielded different structures, one with the free meso positions in a trans-like orientation, and the other with a cis-like disposition. The free meso positions of the obtained dimer have been further functionalised while the synthesis of a zinc analogue has so far been unsuccessful. The X-ray crystal structure of the dinitro derivative of the dinickel(II) azoporphyrin was determined, and the structure showed a cis-like disposition of the nitro groups.

This paper presents early results from a pilot project which aims to investigate the relationship between proprietary structure of small and medium- sized Italian family firms and their owners’ orientation towards a “business evaluation process”. Evidence from many studies point out the importance of family business in a worldwide economic environment: in Italy 93% of the businesses are represented by family firms; 98% of them have less than 50 employees (Italian Association of Family Firms, 2004) so we judged family SMEs as a relevant field of investigation. In this study we assume a broad definition of family business as “a firm whose control (50% of shares or voting rights) is closely held by the members of the same family” (Corbetta,1995). “Business evaluation process” is intended here both as “continuous evaluation process” (which is the expression of a well developed managerial attitude) or as an “immediate valuation” (i.e. in the case of new shareholder’s entrance, share exchange among siblings, etc). We set two hypotheses to be tested in this paper: the first is “quantitative” and aims to verify whether the number of owners (independent variable) in a family firm is positively correlated to the business evaluation process. If a family firm is led by only one subject, it is more likely that personal values, culture and feelings may affect his choices more than “purely economic opportunities”; so there is less concern about monitoring economic performance or about the economic value of the firm. As the shareholders’ number increases, economic aspects in managing the firm grow in importance over the personal values and "value orientation" acquires a central role. The second hypothesis investigates if and to what extent the presence of “non- family members” among the owners affects their orientation to the business evaluation process. The “Cramer’s V” test has been used to test the hypotheses; both were not confirmed from these early results; next steps will lead to make an inferential analysis on a representative sample of the population.

Homologous recombinational repair is an essential mechanism for repair of double-strand breaks in DNA. Recombinases of the RecA-fold family play a crucial role in this process, forming filaments that utilize ATP to mediate their interactions with singleand double-stranded DNA. The recombinase molecules present in the archaea (RadA) and eukaryota (Rad51) are more closely related to each other than to their bacterial counterpart (RecA) and, as a result, RadA makes a suitable model for the eukaryotic system. The crystal structure of Sulfolobus solfataricus RadA has been solved to a resolution of 3.2 A° in the absence of nucleotide analogues or DNA, revealing a narrow filamentous assembly with three molecules per helical turn. As observed in other RecA-family recombinases, each RadA molecule in the filament is linked to its neighbour via interactions of a short b-strand with the neighbouring ATPase domain. However, despite apparent flexibility between domains, comparison with other structures indicates conservation of a number of key interactions that introduce rigidity to the system, allowing allosteric control of the filament by interaction with ATP. Additional analysis reveals that the interaction specificity of the five human Rad51 paralogues can be predicted using a simple model based on the RadA structure.

The assembly of retroviruses is driven by oligomerization of the Gag polyprotein. We have used cryo-electron tomography together with subtomogram averaging to describe the three-dimensional structure of in vitro-assembled Gag particles from human immunodeficiency virus, Mason-Pfizer monkey virus, and Rous sarcoma virus. These represent three different retroviral genera: the lentiviruses, betaretroviruses and alpharetroviruses. Comparison of the three structures reveals the features of the supramolecular organization of Gag that are conserved between genera and therefore reflect general principles of Gag-Gag interactions and the features that are specific to certain genera. All three Gag proteins assemble to form approximately spherical hexameric lattices with irregular defects. In all three genera, the N-terminal domain of CA is arranged in hexameric rings around large holes. Where the rings meet, 2-fold densities, assigned to the C-terminal domain of CA, extend between adjacent rings, and link together at the 6-fold symmetry axis with a density, which extends toward the center of the particle into the nucleic acid layer. Although this general arrangement is conserved, differences can be seen throughout the CA and spacer peptide regions. These differences can be related to sequence differences among the genera. We conclude that the arrangement of the structural domains of CA is well conserved across genera, whereas the relationship between CA, the spacer peptide region, and the nucleic acid is more specific to each genus.

Major imperfections in crosslinked polymers include loose or dangling chain ends that lower the crosslink d., thereby reducing elastic recovery and increasing the solvent swelling. These imperfections are hard to detect, quantify and control when the network is initiated by free radical reactions. As an alternative approach, the sol-gel synthesis of a model poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-2000) network is described using controlled amts. of bis- and mono-triethoxy silyl Pr urethane PEG precursors to give silsesquioxane (SSQ, R-SiO1.5) structures as crosslink junctions with a controlled no. of dangling chains. The effect of the no. of dangling chains on the structure and connectivity of the dried SSQ networks has been detd. by step-crystn. differential scanning calorimetry. The role that micelle formation plays in controlling the sol-gel PEG network connectivity has been studied by dynamic light scattering of the bis- and mono-triethoxy silyl precursors and the networks have been characterized by 29Si solid state NMR, sol fraction and swelling measurements. These show that the dangling chains will increase the mesh size and water uptake. Compared to other end-linked PEG hydrogels, the SSQ-crosslinked networks show a low sol fraction and high connectivity, which reduces solvent swelling, degree of crystallinity and the crystal transition temp. The increased degree of freedom in segment movement on the addn. of dangling chains in the SSQ-crosslinked network facilitates the packing process in crystn. of the dry network and, in the hydrogel, helps to accommodate more water mols. before reaching equil.

The major structural components of HIV are synthesized as a 55-kDa polyprotein, Gag. Particle formation is driven by the self-assembly of Gag into a curved hexameric lattice, the structure of which is poorly understood. We used cryoelectron tomography and contrast-transfer-function corrected subtomogram averaging to study the structure of the assembled immature Gag lattice to approximate to 17-angstrom resolution. Gag is arranged in the immature virus as a single, continuous, but incomplete hexameric lattice whose curvature is mediated without a requirement for pentameric defects. The resolution of the structure allows positioning of individual protein domains. High-resolution crystal structures were fitted into the reconstruction to locate protein-protein interfaces involved in Gag assembly, and to identify the structural transformations associated with virus maturation. The results of this study suggest a concept for the formation of nonsymmetrical enveloped viruses of variable sizes.

Since its discovery in 1991, the bacterial periplasmic oxidative folding catalyst DsbA has been the focus of intense research. Early studies addressed why it is so oxidizing and how it is maintained in its less stable oxidized state. The crystal structure of Escherichia coli DsbA (EcDsbA) revealed that the oxidizing periplasmic enzyme is a distant evolutionary cousin of the reducing cytoplasmic enzyme thioredoxin. Recent significant developments have deepened our understanding of DsbA function, mechanism, and interactions: the structure of the partner membrane protein EcDsbB, including its complex with EcDsbA, proved a landmark in the field. Studies of DsbA machineries from bacteria other than E. coli K-12 have highlighted dramatic differences from the model organism, including a striking divergence in redox parameters and surface features. Several DsbA structures have provided the first clues to its interaction with substrates, and finally, evidence for a central role of DsbA in bacterial virulence has been demonstrated in a range of organisms. Here, we review current knowledge on DsbA, a bacterial periplasmic protein that introduces disulfide bonds into diverse substrate proteins and which may one day be the target of a new class of anti-virulence drugs to treat bacterial infection. In the structure of the title magnesium complex with the phenoxy herbicide (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D), [Mg(H2O)5(C8H5Cl2O3)]+ C8H5Cl2O3)- . 0.5H2O, the discrete cationic MgO6 complex units comprise a carboxyl O-donor from a monodentate 2,4-D cationic ligand and five water molecules in a slightly distorted octahedral coordination. The 2,4-D anions are linked to the complex units through duplex water O-H...O(carboxyl) hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecules. In the crystal inter-unit O-H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions involving coordinated water molecules as well as the hemi-hydrate solvate molecule with carboxyl O-atom acceptors, give a two-dimensional layered structure lying parallel (001), in which pi-pi ligand-cation interactions [minimum ring centroid separation, 3.6405(17)A] and a short O-H...Cl interaction [3.345(2)A] are also found.

The structures of the cocrystalline adducts of 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (3,5-DNBA) with 4-aminosalicylic acid (PASA), the 1:1 partial hydrate, C7H4N2O6 .C7H7NO3 . 2H2O, (I) and 2-hydroxy-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)propenoic acid (HIPA) and the 1:1:1 d6-dimethylsulfoxide solvate, C7H4N2O6 . C11H9NO3 . C2D6OS, (II) are reported. The crystal substructure of (I) comprises two centrosymmetric hydrogen-bonded R2/2(8) homodimers, one with 3,5-DNBA, the other with PASA, and an R2/2(8) 3,5-DNBA-PASA heterodimer. In the crystal, inter-unit amine N-H...O and water O-H...O hydrogen bonds generate a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. In (II), the asymmetric unit consists of the three constituent molecules which form an essentially planar cyclic hydrogen-bonded heterotrimer unit [graph set R2/3(17)] through carboxyl, hydroxy and amino groups. These units associate across a crystallographic inversion centre through the HIPA carboxylic acid group in an R2/2~(8) hydrogen-bonding association, giving a zero-dimensional structure lying parallel to (100). In both structures, pi--pi interactions are present [minimum ring centroid separations: 3.6471(18)A in (I) and 3.5819(10)A in (II)].

The structures of the 1:1 anhydrous salts of nicotine (NIC) with 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNSA) and 5-sulfosalicylic acid (5-SSA), namely (1R,2S)-1-methyl-2-(3-pyridyl)-1H-pyrrolidin-1-ium 2-carboxy-4,6-dinitrophenolate, C10H15N2+ C7H3N2O7-, (I) and (1R,2S)-1-methyl-2-(3-pyridyl)-1H-pyrrolidin-1-ium 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate, C10H15N2+ C7H5O6S-, (II) are reported. The asymmetric units of both (I) and (II) comprise two independent nicotinium cations (C and D) and either two DNSA or two 5-SSA anions (A and B), respectively. One of the DNSA anions shows a 25% rotational disorder in the benzene ring system. In the crystal of (I), inter-unit pyrrolidinium N-H...N(pyridine) hydrogen bonds generate zigzag NIC cation chains which extend along a while the DNSA anions are not involved in any formal inter-species hydrogen bonding but instead form pi--pi associated stacks which parallel the NIC chains along a [ring centroid separation, 3.857(2)A]. Weak C-H...O interactions between chain substructures give an overall three-dimensional structure. With (II), A and B anions form independent zigzag chains with C and D cations, respectively, through carboxylic acid O-H...N(pyridine) hydrogen bonds. These chains, which extend along b are pseudo-centrosymmetrically related and give pi--pi interactions between the benzene rings of anions A and B and the pyridine rings of the NIC cations C and D, respectively [ring centroid separations, 3.6422(19) and 3.7117(19)A]. Present also are weak intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions between the chains, giving an overall three-dimensional structure.

In the structure of the title compound, (C10H18N2)2+, 2(NO3)-, the nitrate salt of 4-(N,N-diethylamino)aniline, the two ethyl groups lie almost perpendicular to the plane of the benzene ring [ring to ethyl C-C-N-C torsion angles, -59.5(2) and 67.5(3)deg.]. The aminium groups of the cation form inter-species N-H...O hydrogen bonds with the nitro O-atoms of both anions giving one-dimensional chains extending along c and are extended into a two-dimensional network structure lying parallel to (010). Weak C-H...O hydrogen-bonding associations are also present.

The monoanionic ligand 1,1,3,3 tetracyano-2 ethoxypropenide (tcnoet) is reported with its Cu(II)–bpy complex of formula [Cu2(µ-tcnoet)2(tcnoet)2(bpy)2]. The structure has been determined using X-ray diffraction and features an alternating chain with bridging tcnoet ligands. One ligand acts as a bidentate, dinucleating ligand with one short Cu–N and one medium Cu–N bond, whereas the other tcnoet is largely monodentate, albeit with a very weak interdimer Cu–N bond. Despite the arrangement in dinuclear units, further arranged into linear chains through the non-bridging tcnoet ligand, the compound shows no significant magnetic exchange, as deduced from magnetic susceptibility down to 4 K. Ligand-field, IR and EPR spectra in the solid state and in frozen solution are reported and are consistent with the overall structure.
