Wild boar (Sus scrofa) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) are the main maintenance hosts for bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in continental Europe. Understanding Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) excretion routes is crucial to define strategies to control bTB in free-ranging populations, nevertheless available information is scarce. Aiming at filling this gap, four different MTC excretion routes (oronasal, bronchial-alveolar, fecal and urinary) were investigated by molecular methods in naturally infected hunter-harvested wild boar and red deer. In addition MTC concentrations were estimated by the Most Probable Number method. MTC DNA was amplified in all types of excretion routes. MTC DNA was amplified in at least one excretion route from 83.0% (CI95 70.8-90.8) of wild ungulates with bTB-like lesions. Oronasal or bronchial-alveolar shedding were detected with higher frequency than fecal shedding (p < 0.001). The majority of shedders yielded MTC concentrations <10(3) CFU/g or mL. However, from those ungulates from which oronasal, bronchial-alveolar and fecal samples were available, 28.2% of wild boar (CI95 16.6-43.8) and 35.7% of red deer (CI95 16.3-61.2) yielded MTC concentrations >10(3) CFU/g or mL (referred here as super-shedders). Red deer have a significantly higher risk of being super-shedders compared to wild boar (OR = 11.8, CI95 2.3-60.2). The existence of super-shedders among the naturally infected population of wild boar and red deer is thus reported here for the first time and MTC DNA concentrations greater than the minimum infective doses were estimated in excretion samples from both species.

The Closest Vector Problem (CVP) and the Shortest Vector Problem (SVP) are prime problems in lattice-based cryptanalysis, since they underpin the security of many lattice-based cryptosystems. Despite the importance of these problems, there are only a few CVP-solvers publicly available, and their scalability was never studied. This paper presents a scalable implementation of an enumeration-based CVP-solver for multi-cores, which can be easily adapted to solve the SVP. In particular, it achieves super-linear speedups in some instances on up to 8 cores and almost linear speedups on 16 cores when solving the CVP on a 50-dimensional lattice. Our results show that enumeration-based CVP-solvers can be parallelized as effectively as enumeration-based solvers for the SVP, based on a comparison with a state of the art SVP-solver. In addition, we show that we can optimize the SVP variant of our solver in such a way that it becomes 35%-60% faster than the fastest enumeration-based SVP-solver to date.

A temática da sobredotação tem suscitado interesse por parte da comunidade científica e educativa, sendo que também se tem assistido, nos últimos anos, a um investimento no estudo da excelência humana, incluindo-se a excelência académica. A premissa de que os alunos universitários de mérito académico podem constituir um capital social importante, que deve ser reconhecido, coloca desafios ao contexto educativo para estimular a realização do potencial do aluno e promover o seu desenvolvimento através da concretização de um projeto vocacional. Ao longo deste trabalho procura-se refletir, do ponto de vista teórico, sobre as caraterísticas dos alunos de mérito escolar, no ensino superior, apresentando conceitos e modelos explicativos das altas habilidades e da realização académica excelente, e discutindo algumas possíveis práticas educativas. Finaliza-se com a apresentação de algumas sugestões para um maior investimento na área a nível do ensino superior português

The Euterpe oleracea Mart. (açaí) is a plant from the Amazon region, classified as "super fruit" because of its various functional properties. However, limited investigation has been performed on açaí by-products, such as seeds. Therefore, the aim of this work was to characterized the phenolic compounds of the aqueous extract of açaí seeds and further evaluate its bioactivity (antioxidant and cytotoxic activities. Only proanthocyanidins were detected, being a B-type (epi)catechin tetramer the most abundant; however, procyanidin trimmers were the most predominant form. Açaí seeds extract revealed a high antioxidant (EC50 ranging from 3.6 to 19.4 μg/mL) and cytotoxic activity, being more effective in the cervical carcinoma cell line (HeLa; GI50 = 18 μg/mL); it did not show toxicity for non-tumor cells. Açaí seeds are considered a waste and could have an added economic benefit, through the extraction of natural antioxidants, particularly proanthocyanidins, that could find applications in food and pharmaceutical industries.
