Energy and carbon prices: a comparison of interactions in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme and the Western Climate Initiative market

We provide a comparative analysis of how short-run variations in carbon and energy prices relate to each other in the emerging greenhouse gas market in California (Western Climate Initiative [WCI], and the European Union Emission Trading Scheme [EU ETS]). We characterize the relationship between carbon, gas, coal, electricity and gasoline prices and an indicator for economic activity, and present a first analysis of carbon prices in the WCI. We also provide a comparative analysis of the structures of the two markets. We estimate a vector autoregressive model and the impulse--response functions. Our main findings show a positive impact from a carbon shock toward electricity, in both markets, but larger in the WCI electricity price, indicating more efficiency. We propose that the widening of carbon market sectors, namely fuels transport and electricity imports, may contribute to this result. To conclude, the research shows significant and coherent relations between variables in WCI, which demonstrate some degree of success for a first year in operation. Reversely, the EU ETS should complete its intended market reform, to allow for more impact of the carbon price. Finally, in both markets, there is no evidence of carbon pricing depleting economic activity.

Gender norms in Portuguese college sudents' judgments in familial homicides: bad men and mad women

The gender of the offender has been proved to be an important factor in judicial sentencing. In this study, we analyze the judgments of College students regarding perpetrators of familial homicides to evaluate the presence of these gender norms and biases in the larger society. The sample included 303 college students (54.8% female) enrolled in several social sciences and engineering courses. Participants were asked to read 12 vignettes based on real crimes taken from Portuguese newspapers. Half were related to infanticide, and half were related to intimate partner homicide. The sex of the offender was orthogonally manipulated to the type of crime. The results show that gender had an important impact on sentences, with males being more harshly penalized by reasons of perversity and women less penalized by reason of mental disorders. In addition, filicide was more heavily penalized than was intimate partner homicide. The results also revealed a tendency toward a retributive conception of punishment. We discuss how gender norms in justice seem to be embedded in society as well as the need for intervention against the punitive tendency of this population.

Conceções éticas de estudantes universitários portugueses sobre as sentenças penais: reabilitar ou retribuir?

A presente investigação tem como objetivo analisar as perceções dos estudantes universitários portugueses sobre as finalidades das sentenças penais tendo subjacentes as Teorias Absolutas e das Teorias Relativas. Pretendeu-se avaliar que objetivos de sentença são mais apoiados entre os estudantes e perceber se existem outras variáveis como preditores significativos, tais como, género, orientação politica, religião, curso e experiência prévia de vitimação. Uma amostra de 344 estudantes universitários, a frequentar os cursos de Ciências Sociais (40,8%), Engenharia (34,9%) e Direito (24,3%), com idades compreendidas entre os 17 e os 48 anos, selecionada por conveniência, preencheu o instrumento de 20 itens adaptado de Cullen, Cullen, e Wozniak. Os resultados apontam para a estabilidade da estrutura dimensional do instrumento adaptado, definido por 2 fatores e 16 itens: o fator punição e o fator reabilitação. O fator mais apoiado entre os participantes foi o de reabilitação o que contraria que a opinião pública a respeito da sentença é mais influenciada pelo retribucionismo. Os participantes apoiam várias finalidades da sentença. Não foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas em função da orientação política, da religião e da experiência de vitimização. Contudo, diferenças estatisticamente significativas foram encontradas para o sexo dos participantes e para o curso.
