The regular use of the computer in the office contributed to the appearance of many risk factors related with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) such as maintaining static sitting postures for long time and awkward postures of the head, neck and upper limbs, leading to increased muscle activity in the cervical spine and shoulders. The objective of this study was to evaluate the presence of risk factors for WRMSD in an office using the Rapid Assessment Office Strain method (ROSA). Based on the results of this ergonomic evaluation, an occupational gym program was designed and implemented. Thirty-eight workplaces were evaluated using the observation of the tasks and pictures records in order to characterize those tasks in more detail. The ROSA tool was applied by an observer, who selected the appropriate score based on the worker's posture as well as the time spent in each posture. Scores were recorded for the sections of the method, specifically Chair, Monitor and Mouse and Keyboard and Telephone. The scores were recorded in a sheet developed for the method. The mean ROSA final score was 3.61 ± 0.64, for Chair section was 3.45 ± 0.55, to Monitor and Telephone section was 3.11 ± 0.61, and to Mouse and Keyboard section was 2.11 ± 0.31. The results led to understand that the analyzed tasks represent situations of risk of discomfort and, according to the methods guidelines, further research and modifications of the workplace may be necessary. It should be emphasized that these scores may not be related to the poor available equipment but with the need to optimize their use by the workers. It was noticed also that the interaction of workers with the tasks and the adopted sitting posture at the computer throughout the day have effects at a muscular level, essentially for the cervical area and shoulders. ROSA tool is an useful and easy method to assess several risk factors associated with WRMSD, also allowing the design of specific occupational gym programs.

Shifting from chemical to biotechnological processes is one of the cornerstones of 21st century industry. The production of a great range of chemicals via biotechnological means is a key challenge on the way toward a bio-based economy. However, this shift is occurring at a pace slower than initially expected. The development of efficient cell factories that allow for competitive production yields is of paramount importance for this leap to happen. Constraint-based models of metabolism, together with in silico strain design algorithms, promise to reveal insights into the best genetic design strategies, a step further toward achieving that goal. In this work, a thorough analysis of the main in silico constraint-based strain design strategies and algorithms is presented, their application in real-world case studies is analyzed, and a path for the future is discussed.

In this work the dielectric properties and ferromagnetic resonance of Polyvinylidene- uoride embedded with 10 wt. % of NiFe2O4 or Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles are presented. The mechanisms of the dielectric relaxation in these two composites do not differ from each other. For more precise characterization of the dielectric relaxation, a two dimensional distribution of relaxation times was calculated from the temperature dependencies of the complex dielectric permittivity. The results obtained from the 2D distribution and the mean relaxation time are found to be consistent. The dynamics of the dielectric permittivity is described by the Arrhenius law. The energy and attempt time of the dielectric relaxators lie in a narrow energy and time region thus proving that the single type chains of polymer are responsible for a dispersion. The magnetic properties of the composites were investigated using the fer- romagnetic resonance. A single resonance line was observed for both samples. From the temperature dependence (100 K - 310 K) of the resonance eld and linewidth, the origin of the observed line was attributed to the NiFe2O4 and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 superparamagnetic nanoparticles. By measuring lms at dif- ferent orientations with respect to the external magnetic eld, the angular dependence of the resonance was observed, indicating the magnetic dipolar in-plane interactions.

Polyimide co-polymers have been prepared based on different diamines as co-monomers: a diamine without CN groups and a novel synthesized diamine with two CN groups prepared by polycondensation reaction followed by thermal cyclodehydration. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements were performed and the dielectric complex function, ac conductivity and electric modulus of the co-polymers were investigated as a function of CN group content in the frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 107 Hz at temperatures from 25 to 260 °C. For all samples and temperatures above 150ºC, the dielectric constant increases with increasing temperature due to increaseing conductivity. The α-relaxation is just detected for the sample without CN groups, being this relaxation overlapped by the electrical conductivity contributions in the remaining samples. For the copolymer samples and the polymer with CN groups an important Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars contribution is detected. The mechanisms responsible for the dielectric relaxation, conduction process and electric modulus response have been discussed as a function of the CN groups content present in the samples.

Stress/strain sensors constitute a class of devices with a global ever-growing market thanks to their use in many fields of modern life. They are typically constituted by thin metal foils deposited on flexible supports. However, the low inherent resistivity and limited flexibility of their constituents make them inadequate for several applications, such as measuring large movements in robotic systems and biological tissues. As an alternative to the traditional compounds, in the present work we will show the advantages to employ a smart material, polyaniline (PANI), prepared by an innovative environmentally friendly route, for force/strain sensor applications wherein simple processing, environmental friendliness and sensitivity are particularly required.

We study the temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility of a strained graphene quantum dot by using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method. Within the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, our unbiased numerical results show that a relative small interaction $U$ may lead to a edge ferromagnetic like behavior in the strained graphene quantum dot, and a possible room temperature transition is suggested. Around half filling, the ferromagnetic fluctuations at the zigzag edge is strengthened both markedly by the on-site Coulomb interaction and the strain, especially in low temperature region. The resultant strongly enhanced ferromagnetic like behavior may be important for the development of many applications.

A newly developed strain rate dependent anisotropic continuum model is proposed for impact and blast applications in masonry. The present model adopted the usual approach of considering different yield criteria in tension and compression. The analysis of unreinforced block work masonry walls subjected to impact is carried out to validate the capability of the model. Comparison of the numerical predictions and test data revealed good agreement. Next, a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the influence of the tensile strengths along the three orthogonal directions and of the wall thickness on the global behavior of masonry walls.

The present study proposes a dynamic constitutive material interface model that includes non-associated flow rule and high strain rate effects, implemented in the finite element code ABAQUS as a user subroutine. First, the model capability is validated with numerical simulations of unreinforced block work masonry walls subjected to low velocity impact. The results obtained are compared with field test data and good agreement is found. Subsequently, a comprehensive parametric analysis is accomplished with different joint tensile strengths and cohesion, and wall thickness to evaluate the effect of the parameter variations on the impact response of masonry walls.

This paper reports on an innovative approach to measuring intraluminal pressure in the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract, especially monitoring GI motility and peristaltic movements. The proposed approach relies on thin-film aluminum strain gauges deposited on top of a Kapton membrane, which in turn lies on top of an SU-8 diaphragm-like structure. This structure enables the Kapton membrane to bend when pressure is applied, thereby affecting the strain gauges and effectively changing their electrical resistance. The sensor, with an area of 3.4 mm2, is fabricated using photolithography and standard microfabrication techniques (wet etching). It features a linear response (R2 = 0.9987) and an overall sensitivity of 2.6 mV mmHg−1. Additionally, its topology allows a high integration capability. The strain gauges’ responses to pressure were studied and the fabrication process optimized to achieve high sensitivity, linearity, and reproducibility. The sequential acquisition of the different signals is carried out by a microcontroller, with a 10-bit ADC and a sample rate of 250 Hz. The pressure signals are then presented in a user-friendly interface, developed using the Integrated Development Environment software, QtCreator IDE, for better visualization by physicians.

Large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) coupled with Fourier transform rheology (FTR) was used for the first time to characterize the large deformation behavior of selected bituminous binders at 20 C. Two polymer modified bitumens (PMB) containing recycled EVA and HDPE and two unmodified bitumens were tested with LAOS-FTR. The LAOS-FTR response of all binders was compared at same frequency, at same Deborah number (by tuning the frequency to the relaxation time of each binder) and at same phase shift angle d (by tuning the frequency to the one corresponding to d = 50 in the SAOS response of each sample). In all the approaches, LAOS-FTR results allowed to differentiate between all the nonlinear mechanical characteristics of the tested binders. All binders show LAOS-FTR patterns reminiscent from colloidal dispersions and emulsions. EVA PMB was less prone to strain-induced microstructural changes when compared to HDPE PMB which showed larger values of nonlinear FTR parameters for the range of shear strains tested in LAOS.

[Excerpt] Citric acid, an important and versatile organic acid extensively used in several industries, is originally produced by Aspergillus niger in submerged fermentation from molasses [1]. However, Yarrowia lipolytica have been studied and demonstrate a great potential as citric acid producer from several carbon sources [1–5] including crude glycerol, a low cost byproduct from the biodiesel industry [6]. The simultaneous production of the isomer isocitric acid is the major problem in using this yeast in the citric acid production. (...)

Alicycliphilus denitrificans strain BC grows anaerobically on acetone with nitrate as electron acceptor. Comparative proteomics of cultures of A. denitrificans strain BC grown on either acetone or acetate with nitrate was performed to study the enzymes involved in the acetone degradation pathway. In the proposed acetone degradation pathway, an acetone carboxylase converts acetone to acetoacetate, an AMP-dependent synthetase/ligase converts acetoacetate to acetoacetyl-CoA, and an acetyl-CoA acetyltransferase cleaves acetoacetyl-CoA to two acetyl-CoA. We also found a putative aldehyde dehydrogenase associated with acetone degradation. This enzyme functioned as a -hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase catalyzing the conversion of surplus acetoacetate to -hydroxybutyrate that may be converted to the energy and carbon storage compound, poly--hydroxybutyrate. Accordingly, we confirmed the formation of poly-?-hydroxybutyrate in acetone-grown cells of strain BC. Our findings provide insight in nitrate-dependent acetone degradation that is activated by carboxylation of acetone. This will aid studies of similar pathways found in other microorganisms degrading acetone with nitrate or sulfate as electron acceptor.

During must fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains thousands of volatile aroma compounds are formed. The objective of the present work was to adapt computational approaches to analyze pheno-metabolomic diversity of a S. cerevisiae strain collection with different origins. Phenotypic and genetic characterization together with individual must fermentations were performed, and metabolites relevant to aromatic profiles were determined. Experimental results were projected onto a common coordinates system, revealing 17 statistical-relevant multi-dimensional modules, combining sets of most-correlated features of noteworthy biological importance. The present method allowed, as a breakthrough, to combine genetic, phenotypic and metabolomic data, which has not been possible so far due to difficulties in comparing different types of data. Therefore, the proposed computational approach revealed as successful to shed light into the holistic characterization of S. cerevisiae pheno-metabolome in must fermentative conditions. This will allow the identification of combined relevant features with application in selection of good winemaking strains.
