Microinjection molding of polymer composites with carbon nanotubes (CNT) requires previous production of the nanocomposites, often by melt extrusion. Each processing step has a thermo-mechanical effect on the polymer melt, conveying different properties to the final product. In this work, polyamide 6 and its composites with pristine and functionalized CNT (f-CNT) were processed by a mini twin-screw extrusion, followed by microinjection molding. The morphology induced on the polymer by each process was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and wide angle X-ray diffraction. Calorimetric analysis showed a secondary crystallization for the microinjected materials, absent for the extruded materials. The characterization of microinjected polyamide 6 by X-ray diffraction revealed a large contribution of the c phase to the total crystallinity, mainly in the skin region, while the nanocomposites and extruded materials were characterized by a larger contribution of the a phase. Functionalization of CNT did not affect significantly the polymer morphology compared to composites with pristine CNT.

A new benzocoumarin bearing an amino group is proposed as a photocleavable protecting group for carboxylic acids. The novel heterocycle, 6-amino-4-chloromethyl-2-oxo-2H-naphtho[1,2-b]pyran was used in the preparation of ester conjugates of butyric acid, and of the corresponding mono- and di-methylated or ethylated derivatives. The photolability of the ester conjugates was studied by irradiation at selected wavelengths in methanol/HEPES buffer (80:20) solutions, and the release of butyric acid was followed with HPLC/UV and 1H NMR monitoring. Release of the carboxylic acid was faster for the monoalkylated derivatives (approximately within 20 min), at the longer wavelengths of irradiation (350 and 419 nm). The photophysics of the heterocyclic conjugates was also evaluated by both steady state and time-resolved methods.

[Excerpt] Cancer is the second most common cause of death in developed countries appearing just after cardiovascular diseases. The treatment of cancer remains a major medical challenge and the development of new anticancer drugs is an emerging topic for the scientific community. During the past three decades several chemical classes of anticancer drugs have been identified. In particular, 2,6-diamino purines proved to be important candidates as new anti-cancer agents.

[Excerpt] The purine core is a privileged scaffold in medicinal chemistry and the biological relevance of purine derivatives makes them attractive targets in the preparation of combinatorial libraries.1,2 In particular, there is a great interest in the synthesis of 8-substituted purines due to their important potential as antiviral and anticancer agents.3 Reports on 8-aminopurines are limited and general methods to obtain these purine derivatives are still needed.4 Cyclic amines and hydrazines are key structural motifs in various bioactive agents.5 Here we report a novel, efficient and inexpensive method for the synthesis of 6,8-diaminopurines 4 incorporating cycloalkylamino substituents at N3position of the purine ring. [Excerpt] Purine nucleobases are fundamental biochemicals in living organisms. They have been a valuable inspiration for drug design once they play several key roles in the cell.1 To the best of our knowledge, reported routes to 8-aminopurines are still scarce due to the difficulty in introducing amino groups in this position of the purine ring. Here we report a novel, inexpensive and facile synthetic method to generate N3,N6-disubstituted-6,8-diaminopurines. In our research group, a number of substituted purines have been obtained from a common imidazole precursor, the 5-amino-4-cyanoformimidoyl imidazole 1. Recently, a comprehensive study on the reactivity of imidazoles 1 with nucleophiles under acidic conditions led us to develop experimental methods to incorporate primary amines into the cyanoformimidoyl group.2 (...)

[Excerpt] Purines, such as adenine, are one of the most important naturally occurring nitrogen heterocycles and they are frequently used as bioactive agents.[1,2] The increasing number of synthetic purines reveals the great potential of these compounds as enzyme inhibitors. Protein Kinases have an important regulatory role in cell proliferation, differentiation and signalling processes. Abnormal signal transduction is responsible for devastating diseases such as cancer. All of the protein kinases identified have in common the cofactor ATP indicating that the adenine nucleus is a very important scaffold for discovery of new anti-cancer agents.[3,4] Previous work identified a modest anticancer activity in a family of 6-arylaminopurines. In the view of these results, it seemed reasonable to assume that some interesting anticancer agents might result by replacement of the phenyl group by a secondary amino group linked to the N-6 atom of the adenine moiety. Our objective was to validate a new device dedicated to measure the light disturbances surrounding bright sources of light under different sources of potential variability. Twenty subjects were involved in the study. Light distortion was measured using an experimental prototype (light distortion analyzer, CEORLab, University of Minho, Portugal) comprising twenty-four LED arrays panel at 2 m. Sources of variability included: intrasession and intersession repeated measures, pupil size (3 versus 6 mm), defocus (þ0.50) correction for the working distance, angular resolution (15 deg versus 30 deg), temporal stimuli presentation, and pupil size. Size, shape, location, and irregularity parameters have been obtained. At a low speed of presentation of the stimuli, changes in angular resolution did not have an effect on the results of the parameters measured. Results did not change with pupil size. Intensity of the central glare source significantly influenced the outcomes. Examination time was reduced by 30% when a 30 deg angular resolution was explored instead of 15 deg. Measurements were fast and repeatable under the same experimental conditions. Size and shape parameters showed the highest consistency, whereas location and irregularity parameters showed lower consistency. The system was sensitive to changes in the intensity of the central glare source but not to pupil changes in this sample of healthy subjects.

Exposure to chronic stress can have broad effects on health ranging from increased predisposition for neuropsychiatric disorders to deregulation of immune responses. The chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) protocol has been widely used to study the impact of stress exposure in several animal models and consists in the random, intermittent, and unpredictable exposure to a variety of stressors during several weeks. CUS has consistently been shown to induce behavioral and immunological alterations typical of the chronic stress-response. Unfortunately C57BL/6 mice, one of the most widely used mouse strains, due to the great variety of genetically modified lines, seem to be resistant to the commonly used 4-week-long CUS protocol. The definition of an alternative CUS protocol allowing the use of C57BL/6 mice in chronic stress experiments is a need. Here, we show that by extending the CUS protocol to 8?weeks is possible to induce a chronic stress-response in C57BL/6 mice, as revealed by abrogated body weight gain, increased adrenals weight, and an overactive hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis with increased levels of serum corticosterone. Moreover, we also observed stress-associated behavioral alterations, including the potentiation of anxious-like and depressive-like behaviors and a reduction of exploratory behavior, as well as subtle stress-related changes in the cell population of the thymus and of the spleen. The present protocol for C57BL/6 mice consistently triggers the spectrum of CUS-induced changes observed in rats and, thus, will be highly useful to researchers that need to use this particular mouse strain as an animal model of neuropsychiatric disorders and/or immune deregulation related to CUS.

This paper presents microlenses (MLs) with low f-number made of AZ4562 photoresist for integration on optical microsystems. The fabrication process was based on the thermal reflow and rehydration. Large series of MLs were fabricated with a width of 35 μm, a thickness of 5 μm, and spaced apart by 3 μm. The MLs were fabricated directly on the surface of a die with type n+/p-substrate junction photodiode fabricated in a standard CMOS process. The measured focal length was 49 μm with a tolerance of ±2 μm (maximum error of ±4%), resulting in a numerical aperture of 33.6 × 10-2 (±1.3 × 10-2). The measurements also revealed an f-number of 1.4.

[Excerto] 6.1. INTRODUÇÃO Como é sabido, as engrenagens são sistemas mecânicos utilizados para transmitir potência e movimento entre os órgãos motor e movido. Tal como acontece em outros sistemas mecânicos de transmissão de movimento, o projeto e dimensionamento dos componentes que constituem as engrenagens assenta no conhecimento das forças que se desenvolvem durante o seu funcionamento (Shigley e Mischke, 1989; Wilson e Sadler, 1993). No caso das engrenagens, a determinação das forças que atuam nos dentes depende das condições de funcionamento e do tipo de dentado. Na verdade, o correto conhecimento da magnitude e do sentido de atuação das diversas componentes da força de engrenamento é de primordial importância, pois permite a determinação dos esforços que atuam nos dentes, nos veios que suportam as rodas dentadas, e nos respetivos apoios dos veios. Com efeito, conhecidas cargas que se desenvolvem nas engrenagens é possível efetuar o cálculo dos dentes, o dimensionamento dos veios e a seleção dos apoios (Branco et al., 2009). (...)
