O objetivo subjacente a toda a investigação que deu origem ao Índice Digital Regional (IDR), inserida num projeto de doutoramento, ia no sentido da “compreensão da realidade da Sociedade da Informação nas sete regiões NUTs II portuguesas, comparando-as e contrastando-as”. À semelhança do que acontece em grande parte dos indicadores de desenvolvimento, em que as assimetrias regionais são uma evidência verificada há várias décadas, importava perceber até que ponto o desenvolvimento da Sociedade da Informação em Portugal está a ser desencadeado sem ter ou não em atenção os valores da equidade, da coesão nacional e da solidariedade regional. Este artigo analisa os resultados do IDR recalculado com os dados estatísticos mais recentes.

[Excerpt] Introduction: Thermal processing is probably the most important process in food industry that has been used since prehistoric times, when it was discovered that heat enhanced the palatability and the life of the heat-treated food. Thermal processing comprehends the heating of foods at a defined temperature for a certain length of time. However, in some foods, the high thermotolerance of certain enzymes and microorganisms, their physical properties (e.g.,highviscosity),ortheircomponents(e.g.,solidfractions) require the application of extreme heat treatments that not only are energy intensive, but also will adversely affect the nutritional and organoleptic properties of the food. Technologies such as ohmic heating, dielectric heating (which includes microwave heating and radiofrequency heating), inductive heating, and infrared heating are available to replace, or complement, the traditional heat-dependent technologies (heating through superheated steam, hot air, hot water, or other hot liquid, being the heating achieved either through direct contact with those agents – mostly superheated steam – or through contact with a hot surface which is in turn heated by such agents). Given that the “traditional” heatdependent technologies are thoroughly described in the literature, this text will be mainly devoted to the so-called “novel” thermal technologies. (...)

Os limites entre os domínios do software e do hardware são cada vez mais ténues, pelo que técnicas inicialmente experimentadas no software têm vindo a ser gradualmente aplicadas no hardware. Este artigo pretende descrever o estado actual da utilização da tecnologia de programação orientada por objectos no projecto de hardware digital. São analisadas as vantagens e implicações quando se introduzem conceitos ligados à tecnologia orientada por objectos em projectos de hardware e é apresentado um exemplo utilizando uma das extensões orientadas por objectos da linguagem VHDL.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is based on the use of fluorescent staining dyes, however, the signal intensity of the images obtained by microscopy is seldom quantified with accuracy by the researcher. The development of innovative digital image processing programs and tools has been trying to overcome this problem, however, the determination of fluorescent intensity in microscopy images still has issues due to the lack of precision in the results and the complexity of existing software. This work presents FISHji, a set of new ImageJ methods for automated quantification of fluorescence in images obtained by epifluorescence microscopy. To validate the methods, results obtained by FISHji were compared with results obtained by flow cytometry. The mean correlation between FISHji and flow cytometry was high and significant, showing that the imaging methods are able to accurately assess the signal intensity of fluorescence images. Background: Neonates show visual preference for their mother's face/voice and shift their attention from their mother to a stranger's face/voice after habituation. Aim: To assess neonate's mother versus stranger's face/voice visual preference, namely mother's anxiety and depression during the third pregnancy trimester and neonate's: 1) visual preference for the mother versus the stranger's face/voice (pretest visual preference), 2) habituation to the mother's face/voice and 3) visual preference for the stranger versus the mother's face/voice (posttest visual preference). Method: Mothers (N=100) filled out the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI) both at the third pregnancy trimester and childbirth, and the “preference and habituation to the mother's face/voice versus stranger” paradigm was administered to their newborn 1 to 5 days after childbirth. Results: Neonates of anxious/depressed mothers during the third pregnancy trimester contrarily to neonates of non-anxious/non-depressed mothers did not look 1) longer at their mother's than at the stranger's face/voice at the pretest visual preference (showing no visual preference for the mother), nor 2) longer at the stranger's face/voice in the posttest than in the pretest visual preference (not improving their attention to the stranger's after habituation). Conclusion: Infants exposed to mother's anxiety/depression at the third gestational trimester exhibit less perceptual/social competencies at birth.
