Energy harvesting performance of BaTiO3/poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) spin coated nanocomposites

The energy harvesting efficiency of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) spin coated films and its nanocomposites with piezoelectric BaTiO3 have been investigated as a function of ceramic filler size and content. It is found that the best energy harvesting performance of ~0.28 W is obtained for the nanocomposite samples with 20% filler content of 10 nm size particles and for 5% filler content for the 100 and 500 nm size fillers. For the larger filler average sizes, the power decreases for filler contents above 5% due to increase of the mechanical stiffness of the samples. Due to the similar dielectric characteristics of the samples, the performance is mainly governed by the mechanical response. The obtained power values, easy processing and the low cost and robustness of the polymer, allow the implementation of the material for micro and nanogenerator applications.

Risco de inundação em áreas rurais: bacia do rio Luís Alves (SC)

O presente trabalho identificou e mapeou as áreas inundáveis da Bacia do Rio Luís Alves. A bacia, de uso da terra predominantemente agrícola, possui um notável histórico de inundações, demandando estudos que subsidiem o planejamento e a gestão do território. A partir da coleta de dados pluviométricos e fluviométricos, associada ao processamento de dados espaciais, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia em ambiente de SIG, que possibilitou a simulação de eventos de inundação, bem como a determinação de áreas de risco.

Allografts in posterior cruciate ligament reconstructions

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries are often associated with other ligament lesions. Multiligament reconstructions require an important quantity of grafts and often determine the need for cadaver allografts during the surgical repair procedures. Herein, the fundamentals of allografts that have been currently used for PCL reconstructions are overviewed. The main issues to be considered when surgeons choose this therapeutic option are also discussed.

Age effects on EEG correlates of the Wisconsin card sorting test

Body and brain undergo several changes with aging. One of the domains in which these changes are more remarkable relates with cognitive performance. In the present work, electroencephalogram (EEG) markers (power spectral density and spectral coherence) of age-related cognitive decline were sought whilst the subjects performed the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Considering the expected age-related cognitive deficits, WCST was applied to young, mid-age and elderly participants, and the theta and alpha frequency bands were analyzed. From the results herein presented, higher theta and alpha power were found to be associated with a good performance in the WCST of younger subjects. Additionally, higher theta and alpha coherence were also associated with good performance and were shown to decline with age and a decrease in alpha peak frequency seems to be associated with aging. Additionally, inter-hemispheric long-range coherences and parietal theta power were identified as age-independent EEG correlates of cognitive performance. In summary, these data reveals age-dependent as well as age-independent EEG correlates of cognitive performance that contribute to the understanding of brain aging and related cognitive deficits.
