Metal-doped anatase nanosized titania photocatalysts were successfully synthesized using a sal gel process. Different amounts of the dopants (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0%) of the metals (Ag, Ni, Co and Pd) were utilized. The UV-Vis spectra (solid state diffuse reflectance spectra) of the doped nanoparticles exhibited a red shift in the absorption edge as a result of metal doping. The metal-doped nanoparticles were investigated for their photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation using Rhodamine B (Rh B) as a control pollutant. The results obtained indicate that the metal-doped titania had the highest activity at 0.4% metal loading. The kinetic models revealed that the photodegradation of Rh B followed a pseudo first order reaction. From ion chromatography (IC) analysis the degradation by-products Rhodamine B fragments were found to be acetate, chloride, nitrite, carbonate and nitrate ions.

Imatinib, a small-molecule inhibitor of the Bcr-Abl kinase, is a successful drug for treating chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Bcr-Abl kinase stimulates the production of H2O2, which in turn activates Abl kinase. We therefore evaluated whether N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a ROS scavenger improves imatinib efficacy. Effects of imatinib and NAC either alone or in combination were assessed on Bcr-Abl(+) cells to measure apoptosis. Role of nitric oxide (NO) in NAC-induced enhanced cytotoxicity was assessed using pharmacological inhibitors and siRNAs of nitric oxide synthase isoforms. We report that imatinib-induced apoptosis of imatinib-resistant and imatinib-sensitive Bcr-Abl(+) CML cell lines and primary cells from CML patients is significantly enhanced by co-treatment with NAC compared to imatinib treatment alone. In contrast, another ROS scavenger glutathione reversed imatinib-mediated killing. NAC-mediated enhanced killing correlated with cleavage of caspases, PARP and up-regulation and down regulation of pro- and anti-apoptotic family of proteins, respectively. Co-treatment with NAC leads to enhanced production of nitric oxide (NO) by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). Involvement of eNOS dependent NO in NAC-mediated enhancement of imatinib-induced cell death was confirmed by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) specific pharmacological inhibitors and siRNAs. Indeed, NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) also enhanced imatinib-mediated apoptosis of Bcr-Abl(+) cells. NAC enhances imatinib-induced apoptosis of Bcr-Abl(+) cells by endothelial nitric oxide synthase-mediated production of nitric oxide.

The conformation about the C(4')-C(5') bond is gauche-trans. An uncommon intermolecular hydrogen bond involving the ribose-ring oxygen O(1') and the base-nitrogen N(3) stabilizes the crystal structure.

Measurement of the relation between polarisation and electric field for ferroelectric trissarcosine calcium chloride (TSCC) was made in the pressure range up to 6 kbar. The pressure dependence of the spontaneous polarisation and the coercive field were obtained, and the existence of a new pressure-induced phase and the paraelectric- ferroelectric-new phase triple point were found.

Interfacial area measurement has been carried out experimentally by measuring the bubble size and holdup for air-sodium chloride solution system. The size of the bubble is predominantly established by the air hold up. High speed photography technique for bubble size measurement and gamma ray attenuation method for holdup measurements are followed. The measured values are compared with the theoretically predicted values. Interracial area as a function of the liquid flow rate and also its distance from the nozzle of the ejector has been reported in this paper. The results obtained for this non-reactive system are also compared with those of air-water system.

The dielectric measurement of ferroelectric trissarcosine calcium chloride (TSCC) was made under various pressures up to 6 kbar. A striking decrease in the peak value of the permittivity, epsilon r, at the transition temperature, Tc, was observed with increasing pressure. The value of Tc increases linearly with a pressure coefficient dTc/dp=11.1K kbar-1 at low pressures. This increase in Tc supports the suggestion that the ferroelectric transition is of the pure order-disorder type. It is suggested on the basis of the behaviour of epsilon r with pressure that the order of the ferroelectric transition changes from second to first order on application of pressure.

The possible conformations of sialic acid were analysed using semi-empirical potential functions. The solid state conformation has approx. 0.2 kcal/mol higher energy than the minimum energy conformation. These studies suggest that in solution sialic acid may exist preponderantly in two different conformations which differ in the orientation of the terminal hydroxymethyl group of glycerol side-chain. The present model is consistent with 1H- and 13C-NMR data, but differs from the earlier models.

Pro-Gly segments in peptides and proteins are prone to adopt the 0-turn conformation. This paper reports experimental data for the presence of this conformation in a linear tripeptide N-acetyl-L-prolylglycyl-L-phenylalanineb oth in the solid state and in solution. X-ray diffraction data on the tripeptide crystal show that it exists in the type I1 0-turn conformation. CD and proton NMR data show that this conformation persists in trifluoroethanol and methanol solutions in equilibrium with the nonhydrogen-bonded structures. Isomerization around the acetyl-prolyl bond is seen to take place in dimethyl sulfoxide solutions of the tripeptide.

In the systematic study of amine … LiCl [amines = NH3, CH3NH2, (CH3)2NH] complexes the possibility of an ion-pair structure and the effect of methylation on the stabilization energy is investigated. ΔEis evaluated by the SCF/4-31G method and augmented by the approximate dispersion energy calculated perturbationally. The interaction energy decreases with the increasing number of methyl groups in the amine. The dispersion energy plays a negligible role in the stabilization of complexes. None of the systems studied are ion pairs; their Li bonds are of a so-called molecular type. Due to the divergence of the multipole expansion, the attempt to correct the 4-31G stabilization energies via the electrostatic energy fails. The relative order of the ΔE in the series of complexes is verified instead in the extended basis set calculation. The lithium bonds are compared with their H-bonded analogues.

Alamethicin, its derivatives and some synthetic fragments have been shown to be uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation in rat liver mitochondria. A minimum peptide chain length of 13 residues is necessary for this activity. Peptide esters are more efficient uncouplers than the corresponding peptide acids. Esterification of the Glu(18) γ-COOH group in alamethicin does not diminish uncoupling activity. The structural requirements for uncoupling activity parallel those determined for ionophoretic action in small, unilamellar liposomes. A kinetic model has been developed for the bulk polymerization of vinyl chloride using Talamini's hypothesis of two-phase polymerization and a new concept of kinetic solubility which assumes that rapidly growing polymer chains have considerably greater solubility than the thermodynamic solubility of preformed polymer molecules of the same size and so can remain in solution even under thermodynamically unfavourable conditions. It is further assumed that this kinetic solubility is a function of chain length. The model yields a rate expression consistent with the experimental data for vinyl chloride bulk polymerization and moreover is able to explain several characteristic kinetic features of this system. Application of the model rate expression to the available rate data has yielded 2.36 × 108l mol−1 sec−1 for the termination rate constant in the polymer-rich phase; as expected, this value is smaller than that reported for homogenous polymerization by a factor of 10–30.
