Monochloro-tetra-μ-aryl-carboxylatodiruthenium(III, II) compounds Ru2Cl (O2CAr)4 (Ar = -C6H5; -C6H4-p-OCH3), are prepared and characterized. The compounds have magnetic moments that correspond to three unpaired spins per dimer. The Rusingle bondRu bond order is 2.5 and the ground electronic configuration is σ2π4δ2(δ*π*)3. The visible spectral band is observed at ca 450 nm along with a shoulder near 580 nm in DMF solution. The compounds undergo a one-electron Ru(III)Ru(II) → Ru(II)Ru(II) quasi-reversible reduction in DMF near 0.0 V vs sce.

A chitooligosaccharide specific lectin (Luffa acutangula agglutinin) has been purified from the exudate of ridge gourd fruits by affinity chromatography on soybean agglutininglycopeptides coupled to Sepharose-6B. The affinity purified lectin was found homogeneous by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, in sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gels, by gel filtration on Sephadex G-100 and by sedimentation velocity experiments. The relative molecular weight of this lectin is determined to be 48,000 ± 1,000 by gel chromatography and sedimentation equilibrium experiments. The sedimentation coefficient (S20, w) was obtained to be 4·06 S. The Stokes’ radius of the protein was found to be 2·9 nm by gel filtration. In sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis the lectin gave a molecular weight of 24,000 in the presence as well as absence of 2-mercaptoethanol. The subunits in this dimeric lectin are therefore held by non-covalent interactions alone. The lectin is not a glycoprotein and circular dichroism spectral studies indicate that this lectin has 31% α-helix and no ß-sheet. The lectin is found to bind specifically to chitooligosaccharides and the affinity of the lectin increases with increasing oligosaccharide chain length as monitored by near ultra-violetcircular dichroism and intrinsic fluorescence titration. The values of ΔG, ΔΗ and ΔS for the binding process showed a pronounced dependence on the size of the oligosaccharide. The values for both ΔΗ and ΔS show a significant increase with increase in the oligosaccharide chain length showing that the binding of higher oligomers is progressively more favoured thermodynamically than chitobiose itself. The thermodynamic data is consistent with an extended binding site in the lectin which accommodates a tetrasaccharide. Based on the thermodynamic data, blue shifts and fluorescence enhancement, spatial orientation of chitooligosaccharides in the combining site of the lectin is assigned.

Single crystals of potassium hydrogen phthalate (KAP) have been grown by slow evaporation method from aqueous solutions. Thermal analyses indicate that KAP crystals decompose into phthalic anhydride and KOH around 520 K. Electrical properties of single crystals of KAP have been studied along with the effect of X-ray irradiation of the crystals. The electrical transport appears to be associated with tunneling of protons. The irradiated crystal exhibits lower dielectric constant and higher ac conductivity.

A brief qualitative comparison is made of perovskite ABO sub 3 and layered perovskite ABO sub 3 and layered perovskite A sub 2 BO sub 4 oxides with special emphasis on the influence of geometrical factors on certain physico-chemical properties. The layered perovskite oxides are distinguished from three-dimensional oxides by a looser packing, frustration in three-dimensional interactions, more internal pressure on B--O bonds for small tolerance factors, and by different values of site-percolation thresholds. Their influence on electronic configurations of metal ions, stabilities and syntheses of compounds is discussed. The influence of increased anisotropy in layered oxides on localisation of charge carriers and in suppressing the onset of long-range ferromagnetic ordering is also discussed.

Fungus-growing termites are involved in many ecological processes and play a central role in influencing soil dynamics in the tropics. The physical and chemical properties of their nest structures have been largely described; however less information is available concerning the relatively temporary structures made above-ground to access food items and protect the foraging space (the soil `sheetings'). This study investigated whether the soil physical and chemical properties of these constructions are constant or if they vary depending on the type of food they cover. Soil samples and soil sheetings were collected in a forest in India, from leaves on the ground (LEAF), fallen branches (WOOD), and vertical soil sheetings covering the bark of trees (TREE). In this environment, termite diversity was dominated by Odontotermes species, and especially Odontotermes feae and Odontotermes obesus. However, there was no clear niche differentiation and, for example, O. feae termites were found on all the materials. Compared with the putative parent soil (control), TREE sheetings showed the greatest (and most significant) differences (higher clay content and smaller clay particle sizes, lower C and N content and smaller delta C-13 and delta N-15), while LEAF sheetings were the least modified, though still significantly different than the control soil. We suggest that the termite diversity is a less important driver of potential soil modification than sheeting diversity. Further, there is evidence that construction properties are adapted to their prospective life-span, with relatively long-lasting structures being most different from the parent soil. The electroslag refining technique is one of the modern tools which is capable of imparting superior mechanical and chemical properties to metals and alloys. Refining usually results in the elimination of a number of casting or solidification defects, such as shrinkage porosity, gas porosity, pipe, micro- and macro segregation. Remelting also imparts a directional grain structure apart from refining the size of the inclusions, grains and precipitates. This technique has over the years been used widely and successfully to improve the mechanical and chemical properties of steels and alloy steels which are used in the nuclear, missile, aerospace and marine industries for certain critical applications. But the application of ESR to aluminium and its alloys is only recent. This paper investigates the response of an aluminium alloy (corresponding to the Indian Specification IS: 7670) to ESR. Based on theoretical considerations and microstructural evidence it elucidates how ESR of aluminium alloys differs from that of ferrous alloys. The improvement achieved in mechanical properties of the alloy is correlated with the microstructure.

Potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and its isomorphs have received enormous attention in the last 2 decades. In particular, KTP assumes importance due to its large nonlinear optic and electrooptic coefficients together with the broad thermal and angular acceptance for second harmonic generation. This article provides an overview of the material aspects, structural, physical, and chemical properties and device feasibility of the KTP family of crystals. Some of the current areas of research and development along with their significance in understanding the physical properties as well as device applications are addressed. Optical waveguide fabrication processes and characteristics with their relevance to the present-day technology are highlighted. Studies performed so far have enabled us to understand the fundamental aspects of these materials and what needs to be pursued vigorously is the exploitation of their device applications to the maximum extent.

A heterotroph Paenibacillus polymyxa bacteria is adapted to pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite minerals by repeated subculturing the bacteria in the presence of the mineral until their growth characteristics became similar to the growth in the absence of mineral. The unadapted and adapted bacterial surface have been chemically characterised by zeta-potential, contact angle, adherence to hydrocarbons and FT-IR spectroscopic studies. The surface free energies of bacteria have been calculated by following the equation of state and surface tension component approaches. The aim of the present paper is to understand the changes in surface chemical properties of bacteria during adaptation to sulfide minerals and the projected consequences in bioflotation and bioflocculation processes. The mineral-adapted cells became more hydrophilic as compared to unadapted cells. There are no significant changes in the surface charge of bacteria before and after adaptation, and all the bacteria exhibit an iso-electric point below pH 2.5. The contact angles are observed to be more reliable for hydrophobicity assessment than the adherence to hydrocarbons. The Lifschitz–van der Waals/acid–base approach to calculate surface free energy is found to be relevant for mineral–bacteria interactions. The diffuse reflectance FT-IR absorbance bands for all the bacteria are the same illustrating similar surface chemical composition. However, the intensity of the bands for unadapted and adapted cells is significantly varied and this is due to different amounts of bacterial secretions underlying different growth conditions.

Termite mounds are conspicuous features in many tropical ecosystems. Their shape and soil physicochemical properties have been suggested to result from the termites ecological need to control the temperature and humidity within their nests and protect themselves from predators. This study aimed to determine the influence of the parent soil properties on the shape and soil physical and chemical properties of termite mounds. Termite mounds built by the fungus-growing termite species Odontotermes obesus were compared in two forests with different soil properties (Ferralsol or Luvisol) in Southern India. Our findings confirm that soil properties influence the physicochemical characteristics of mound material and may affect the shape, but these impacts are mostly independent of the size of the mounds (i.e., the age of the colonies). Mound walls were more enriched in clay and impoverished in C and N in the Luvisol than the Ferralsol. However, their shape was more complex in the Ferralsol than the Luvisol, suggesting a possible link between the clay content in soil and the shape of termite mounds. The results also suggest that clay becomes enriched in O. obesus mound walls through a more passive process rather than solely by particle selection, and that termite mound shape results from the soil properties rather than the ecological needs of termites. In conclusion, although ecologists have mainly focused upon the influence of termite ecological needs on their nest properties, this study highlights the need for a better understanding about the role of the soil pedological properties and, as a consequence, how these properties drive the establishment and survival of termites in tropical ecosystems. Tin (II) sulphide (SnS), a direct band gap semiconductor compound, has recently received great attention due to its unique properties. Because of low cost, absence of toxicity, and good abundance in nature, it is becoming a candidate for future multifunctional devices particularly for light conversion applications. Although the current efficiencies are low, the cost-per-Watt is becoming competitive. At room temperature, SnS exhibits stable low-symmetric, double-layered orthorhombic crystal structure, having a = 0.4329, b = 1.1192, and c = 0.3984nm as lattice parameters. These layer-structured materials are of interest in various device applications due to the arrangement of structural lattice with cations and anions. The layers of cations are separated only by van der Waals forces that provide intrinsically chemically inert surface without dangling bonds and surface density of states. As a result, there is no Fermi level pinning at the surface of the semiconductor. This fact leads to considerably high chemical and environmental stability. Further, the electrical and optical properties of SnS can be easily tailored by modifying the growth conditions or doping with suitable dopants without disturbing its crystal structure. In the last few decades, SnS has been synthesized and studied in the form of single-crystals and thin-films. Most of the SnS single-crystals have been synthesized by Bridgeman technique, whereas thin films have been developed using different physical as well as chemical deposition techniques. The synthesis or development of SnS structures in different forms including single-crystals and thin films, and their unique properties are reviewed here. The observed physical and chemical properties of SnS emphasize that this material could has novel applications in optoelectronics including solar cell devices, sensors, batteries, and also in biomedical sciences. These aspects are also discussed.

The electronic structures of a series of 4-substituted pyridine N-oxides and 4-nitroquinoline N-oxide are investigated using the simple Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP), a modified PPP, IEH and MINDO/2 methods. The electronic absorption band maxima and dipole moments are calculated and compared with experimental values. The photoelectron spectra of these compounds are assigned. The nature of the N-oxide group is characterized using the orbital population distributions. The antifungal activity exhibited by some of these compounds is discussed in terms of the nucleophilic frontier electron densities, superdelocalizabilities and electron acceptor properties. The effect of the electron releasing as well as the electron withdrawing substituents on the physico-chemical properties is explained.

Structural specificity for the direct vesicle−vesicle exchange of phospholipids through stable molecular contacts formed by the antibiotic polymyxin B (PxB) is characterized by kinetic and spectroscopic methods. As shown elsewhere [Cajal, Y., Rogers, J., Berg, O. G., & Jain, M. K. (1996) Biochemistry 35, 299−308], intermembrane molecular contacts between anionic vesicles are formed by a small number of PxB molecules, which suggests that a stoichiometric complex may be responsible for the exchange of phospholipids. Larger clusters containing several vesicles are formed where each vesicle can make multiple contacts if sterically allowed. In this paper we show that the overall process can be dissected into three functional steps: binding of PxB to vesicles, formation of stable vesicle−vesicle contacts, and exchange of phospholipids. Polycationic PxB binds to anionic vesicles. Formation of molecular contacts and exchange of monoanionic phospholipids through PxB contacts does not depend on the chain length of the phospholipid. Only monoanionic phospholipids (with methanol, serine, glycol, butanol, or phosphatidylglycerol as the second phosphodiester substituent in the head group) exchange through these contacts, whereas dianionic phosphatidic acid does not. Selectivity for the exchange was also determined with covesicles of phosphatidylmethanol and other phospholipids. PxB does not bind to vesicles of zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine, and its exchange in covesicles is not mediated by PxB. Vesicles of dianionic phospholipids, like phosphatidic acid, bind PxB; however, this phospholipid does not exchange. The structural features of the contacts are characterized by the spectroscopic and chemical properties of PxB at the interface. PxB in intermembrane contacts is readily accessible from the aqueous phase to quenchers and reagents that modify amino groups. Results show that PxB at the interface can exist in two forms depending on the lipid/PxB ratio. Additional studies show that stable PxB-mediated vesicle−vesicle contacts may be structurally and functionally distinct from “stalks”, the putative transient intermediate for membrane fusion. The phenomenon of selective exchange of phospholipids through peptide-mediated contacts could serve as a prototype for intermembrane targeting and sorting of phospholipids during their biosynthesis and trafficking in different compartments of a cell. The protocols and results described here also extend the syllogistic foundations of interfacial equilibria and catalysis.

Diphenyl sulphoxide(DPSO) and dimethyl sulphoxide(DMSO) complexes of iron(II) having the composition [Fe(DPSO)6](ClO4)2, Fe(DPSO)2Cl2, Fe(DPSO)3Br2, Fe(DPSO)4I2, [Fe (DMSO)3Cl2]. DMSO and [Fe(DMSO)3Br2]. DMSO and DPSO complexes of iron(III), Fe(DPSO)2 Cl3 have been prepared and their physico-chemical properties studied. Their magnetic moments at room temperature show them to be spin-free complexes. The i.r. spectra reveal that oxygen is the donor atom in all the complexes. The electronic spectra of iron(II) complexes indicate octahedral coordination for the metal ion. A salt like structure [Fe(DPSO)4Cl2][FeCl4], is suggested for the iron (III) complex, where the cationic species has distorted octahedral structure while the anionic species has tetrahedral structure.
