The medieval icons of southern India are among the most acclaimed Indian artistic innovations, especially those of the Chola Tamil kingdom (9th–10th centuries), which is best known for the Hindu iconography of the Dance of Siva that captured the imagination of master sculptor Rodin.1 Apart from these prolific images, however, not much was known about southern Indian copperbased metallurgy. Hence, these often spectacular castings have been regarded as a sudden efflorescence, almost without precedent, of skilled metallurgy as contrasted with tin-rich China or southeast Asia, for instance, where a developed copper-bronze tradition has been better appreciated.

A modified method has been developed for the deposition of transparent semiconducting thin films of tin oxide, involving the chemical vapour phase oxidation of tin iodide. These films show sheet resistances greater than 100 Ω/□ and an average optical transmission in the visible range exceeding 80%. The method avoids uncontrolled contamination, resulting in better reproducibility of the films. The films showed direct and indirect transitions and the possibility of an indirect forbidden transition. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the films are polycrystalline. The low mobility values of the films have been attributed to the grain boundary scattering effect.

There are several areas in the plywood industry where Operations Research techniques have greatly assisted in better decision-making. These have resulted in improved profits, reduction of wood losses and better utilization of resources. Realizing these, some of the plywood manufacturing firms in the developed countries have established separate Operations Research departments or divisions. In the face of limited raw-material resources, raising costs and a competitive environment, the benefits attributable to the use of these techniques are becoming more and more significant.

Surface oxidation of Cd, In, Sn and Sb has been investigated by employing valence bands, metal 4d levels and plasmon bands in X-ray photoelectron spectra. O(KLL), metal M4N45N45, and plasmon transitions in electron-induced Auger spectra as well as Auger transitions due to the metal (metal oxide) and plasmons in X-ray-induced Auger spectra. The surface oxides are In2O4, CdO and a mixture of SnO and SnO2 in the case of In. Cd and Sn respectively. The facility of surface oxidation is found to vary as In>Cd>Sn>Sb. Inter-atomic Auger transitions involving oxygen valence bands have been identified on oxidized surfaces of Cd and In.

Single crystals of tin oxide have been grown under conditions obtained in oil fired porcelain tunnel kilns. It was noted that the reducing conditions in the kilns help in the growth of SnO2 crystals at much lower temperatures (1300°C). The growth seems to more pronounced in presence of silicon carbide. The crystals grow as long fibres of 0.1 to 0.5 mm dia. and 10 to 50 mm length. The crystals exhibit rutile structure and the direction of growth seems to be favoured in any one of the major axes a and c.

A new shock wave generator has been designed, fabricated and tested for preservative impregnation studies into wood slats used for manufacturing pencils in the Shock Waves Laboratory, IISc, Bangalore. Series of experiments have been carried out in the laboratory to achieve satisfactory preservative impregnation into VATTA wood slats. The experiments have shown that it is indeed possible to impregnate preservatives into VATTA wood slats using shock waves and the depth of penetration and the retention of preservatives by wood slats is as good as the conventional methods. This method is expected to result in substantial reduction in the treatment process time compared to conventional methods that are currently being used by the pencil manufacturing industry.

Thin films of indium-tin oxide have been deposited by DC diode sputtering from an indium-tin alloy target in an argon, hydrogen and oxygen atmosphere. Films with sheet resistance of 11 ohms/square and 80% light transmission have been obtained. The effect of cathode composition and gas mixture on sheet resistance and optical transmission properties of the films have been studied.

Rates of oxidation of p-xylene were measured in the temperature range 320 to 420 °C using tin vanadate as catalyst in an isothermal differential flow reactor. The amounts of p-xylene converted were determined by analyzing the main products (p-tolualdehyde, maleic anhydride, p-toluic acid and traces of terephthalic acid). Negligible amounts of products of complete combustion were formed. The reaction rates obtained for p-xylene followed the relation, Image based on the redox model. The mechanism of the reaction was determined by conducting different sets of experiments and it was found that the reaction followed the parallel-consecutive mechanism, in which p-tolualdehyde and maleic anhydride were formed from the parallel route whereas p-toluic acid was formed from the consecutive route.

Product success is substantially influenced by satisfaction of knowledge needs of designers, and many tools and methods have been proposed to support these needs. However, adoption of these methods in industry is minimal. This may be due to an inadequate understanding of the knowledge needs of designers in industry. This research attempts to develop a better understanding of these needs by undertaking descriptive studies in an industry. We propose a taxonomy of knowledge, and evaluate this by analyzing the questions asked by the designers involved in the study during their interactions. Using the taxonomy, we converted the questions asked into a generic form. The generic questions provide an understanding about what knowledge must be captured during design, and what its structure should be.

Tin sulphide films were grown at different substrate temperatures by a thermal co-evaporation technique. The crystallinity of the films was evaluated from X-ray diffraction studies. Single-phase SnS films showed a strong (040) orientation with an orthorhombic crystal structure and a grain size of 0.12 mu m. The films showed an electrical resistivity of 6.1 Omega cm with an activation energy of 0.26 eV. These films exhibited an optical band gap of 1.37 eV and had a high optical absorption coefficient (> 10(4) cm(-1)) above the band-gap energy. The results obtained were analysed to evaluate the potentiality of the co-evaporated SnS films as an absorber layer in solar photovoltaic devices.

Sensing and photocatalysis of textile industry effluents such as dyes using mesoporous anatase titania nanowires are discussed here.Spectroscopic investigations show that the titania nanowires preferentially sense cationic (e.g. Methylene Blue, Rhodamine B) over anionic (e.g. Orange G, Remazol Brilliant Blue R) dyes. The adsorbed dye concentration on titania nanowires increased with increase in nanowire dimensions and dye solution pH. Electrochemical sensing directly corroborated spectroscopic findings. Electrochemical detection sensitivity for Methylene Blue increased by more than two times in magnitude with tripling of nanowire average length. Photodegradation of Methylene Blue using titania nanowires is also more efficient than the commercial P25-TiO2 nanopowders. Keeping illumination protocol and observation times constant, the Methylene Blue concentration in solution decreased by only 50% in case of P25-TiO2 nanoparticles compared to a 100% decrease for titania nanowires. Photodegradation was also found to be function of exposure times and dye solution pH.Excellent sensing ability and photocatalytic activity of the titania nanowires is attributed to increased effective reaction area of the controlled nanostructured morphology. PbSnS2 thin film has been prepared for the first time by spray pyrolysis technique on FTO substrate at 570K. The preliminary optical and structural characteristics of the film have been reported. The optical studies showed that the value of the fundamental absorption edge lies at 1.47eV and a low energy absorption band tail has been observed. The prepared film is p- type electrical conductivity, polycrystalline in nature and has an orthorhombic crystal structure. The value of an average grain size of the film is 350Å.
