Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. Anion-deficient layered perovskite oxides of the formula, ACa2Nb3-xMxO10-x (A = Rb, Cs; M = Al, Fe) for 0 < x less-than-or-equal-to 1.0, possessing tetragonal structures similar to the parent ACa2Nb3O10, have been synthesized. The interlayer A cations in these materials are readily exchanged with protons in aqueous HNO3 to give the protonated derivatives, HCa2Nb3-xMxO10-x; the latter are solid Bronsted acids intercalating a number of organic amines including aniline (pK(a) = 4.63). The distribution of acid sites in the interlayer region of HCa2Nb2MO9 inferred from n-alkylamine intercalation suggests that oxygen vacancies and Nb/M atoms are disordered in the ACa2Nb2MO9 samples prepared at 1100-1200-degrees-C. Annealing a disordered sample of CsCa2Nb2AlO9 for a long time at lower temperatures tends to order the Nb/Al atoms and oxygen vacancies to produce octahedral (NbO6/2)-tetrahedral (AlO4/2)-octahedral (NbO6/2) layer sequence reminiscent of the brownmillerite structure.

Anion-deficient perovskite oxides of the formula AM(1-x)Al(x)O(3-x) (A = Na or K; M = Nb or Ta) have been prepared for 0 < x less than or equal to 0.5. Diffraction experiments reveal that while the potassium compounds adopt orthorhombic/cubic perovskite structures similar to the parent KNbO3/KTaO3, the sodium compound, NaNb0.5Al0.5O2.5, possesses a brownmillerite/LaSr-CuAlO5-like superstructure. Al-27 NMR spectra show an exclusive tetrahedral oxygen coordination for AI(III) in Na-Nb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (I) and both tetrahedral and octahedral coordination for Al(III) in KNb0.5Al0.5O2.5 (II). The results suggest a long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in I and II respectively. Electrical conductivity measurements show a significant oxide ion conduction for KNb1-xAlxO3-x, with the conductivity increasing with x up to x = 0.5. The differences in the Arrhenius plots of the ionic conductivity of I and II have been rationalized in terms of the long-range and short-range ordering of oxide ion vacancies in the anion-deficient perovskite oxides.

The static and dynamic pressure concentration isotherms (PCIs) of MmNi(5-x)Al(x). (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8) hydrides were measured at different temperatures using volumetric method. The effect of Al substitution on PCI and thermodynamic properties were studied. The plateau pressure and maximum hydrogen storage capacity decreased with Al content whereas reaction enthalpy increased. The plateau pressure, plateau slope and hysteresis effect was observed more for dynamic PCIs compared to static PCIs. Different mathematical models used for metal hydride-based thermodynamic devices simulation are compared to select suitable model for static and dynamic PCI simulation of MmNi(5)-based hydrides. Few important physical coefficients (partial molar volume, reaction enthalpy, reaction entropy, etc.) useful for development of thermodynamic devices were estimated. A relation has been proposed to correlate aluminium content and physical coefficients for the prediction of unknown PCI. The simulated and experimental PCIs were found matching closely for both static and dynamic conditions. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 semiconductor heterojunction was fabricated. The structural and optical properties of the semiconductor materials were studied. The band offset at the Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique. From the measurement of the core level energies and valence band maximum of the constituent elements, the valence band offset was calculated to be -1.1 +/- 0.24 eV and the conduction band offset was 0.9 +/- 0.34 eV. The band alignment at the heterojunction was found to be of type-I. The study of Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction is useful for solar cell applications. (C) 2015 Author(s). Complexes [Ru2O(O2CR)(2)(1-MeIm)(6)](ClO4)(2) (la-c), [Ru2O(O2CR)(2)(ImH)(6)](ClO4)(2) (2a,b), and [Ru2O(O2CR)(2)(4-MeImH)(6)](ClO4)(2) (3a,b) with a (mu-oxo)bis(mu-carboxylato)diruthenium(III) core have been prepared by reacting Ru2Cl(O2CR)(4) with the corresponding imidazole base, viz. 1-methylimidazole (1-MeIm), imidazole (ImH), and 4-methylimidazole (4-MeImH) in methanol, followed by treatment with NaClO4 in water (R: Me, a; C6H4-p-OMe, b; C6H4-p-Me, c). Diruthenium(III,IV) complexes [Ru2O(O2CR)(2)(1-MeIm)(6)](ClO4)(3) (R: Me, 4a; C6H4-p-OMe, 4b; C6H4-p-Me, 4c) have been prepared by one-electron oxidation of 1 in MeCN with K2S2O8 in water. Complexes la, 2a . 3H(2)O, and 4a . 1.5H(2)O have been structurally characterized. Crystal data for the complexes are as follows: la, orthorhombic, P2(1)2(1)2(1), a = 7.659(3) Angstrom, b = 22.366(3) Angstrom, c = 23.688(2) Angstrom, V = 4058(2) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, R = 0.0475, and R-w = 0.0467 for 2669 reflections with F-o > 2 sigma(F-o); 2a . 3H(2)O, triclinic, , a = 13.735(3) Angstrom, b = 14.428(4) Angstrom, c = 20.515(8) Angstrom, alpha = 87.13(3)degrees, beta = 87.61(3)degrees, gamma = 63.92(2)degrees, V = 3646(2) Angstrom(3), Z = 4, R = 0.0485 and R-w = 0.0583 for 10 594 reflections with F-o > 6 sigma(F-o); 4a . 1.5H(2)O triclinic, , a = 11.969(3) Angstrom, b = 12.090(6) Angstrom, c = 17.421(3) Angstrom, alpha = 108.93(2)degrees, beta = 84.42(2)degrees, gamma = 105.97(2)degrees, V = 2292(1) Angstrom(3), Z = 2, R = 0.0567, and R-w = 0.0705 for 6775 reflections with F-o > 6 sigma(F-o). The complexes have a diruthenium unit held by an oxo and two carboxylate ligands, and the imidazole ligands occupy the terminal sites of the core. The Ru-Ru distance and the Ru-O-oxo-Ru angle in la and 2a . 3H(2)O are 3.266(1), 3.272(1) Angstrom and 122.4(4), 120.5(2)degrees, while in 4a . 1.5H(2)O these values are 3.327(1) Angstrom and 133.6(2)degrees. The diruthenium(III) complexes 1-3 are blue in color and they exhibit an intense visible band in the range 560-575 nm. The absorption is charge transfer in nature involving the Ru(III)-d pi and O-oxo-p pi orbitals. The diruthenium(III,IV) complexes are red in color and show an intense band near 500 nm. The diruthenium(III) core readily gets oxidized with K2S2O8 forming quantitatively the diruthenium(III,IV) complex. The visible spectral record of the conversion shows an isosbestic point at 545 nm for 1 and at 535 nm for 2 and 3. Protonation of the oxide bridge by HClO4 in methanol yields the [Ru-2(mu-OH)(mu-O2CR)(2)](3+) core. The hydroxo species shows a visible band al 550 nm. The pK(a) value for la is 2.45. The protonated species are unstable. The 1-MeIm species converts to the diruthenium(III,IV) core, while the imidazole complex converts to [Ru(ImH)(6)](3+) and some uncharacterized products. Complex [Ru(ImH)(6)](ClO4)(3) has been structurally characterized. The diruthenium(III) complexes are essentially diamagnetic and show characteristic H-1 NMR spectra indicating the presence of the dimeric structure in solution. The diruthenium(III,IV) complexes are paramagnetic and display rhombic EPR spectral features. Complexes 1-3 are redox active. Complex 1 shows the one-electron reversible Ru-2(III)/(RuRuIV)-Ru-III, one-electron quasireversible (RuRuIV)-Ru-III/Ru-2(IV), and two-electron quasireversible Ru-2(III)/Ru-2(II) couples near 0.4, 1.5, and -1.0 V vs SCE In MeCN-0.1 M TBAP, respectively, in the cyclic and differential pulse voltammetric studies. Complexes 2 and 3 exhibit only reversible Ru-2(III)/(RuRuIV)-Ru-III and the quasireversible (RuRuIV)-Ru-III/Ru-2(IV) couples near 0.4 and 1.6 V vs SCE, respectively, The observation of a quasireversible one-step two-electron transfer reduction process in 1 is significant considering its relevance to the rapid and reversible Fe-2(III)/Fe-2(II) redox process known for the tribridged diiron core in the oxy and deoxy forms of hemerythrin.

A series of bimetallic acetylacetonate (acac) complexes, AlxCr1-x(acac)(3), 0 <= x <= 1, have been synthesized for application as precursors for the CVD Of Substituted oxides, such as (AlxCr1-x)(2)O-3. Detailed thermal analysis has been carried out on these complexes, which are solids that begin subliming at low temperatures, followed by melting, and evaporation from the melt. By applying the Langmuir equation to differential thermogravimetry data, the vapour pressure of these complexes is estimated. From these vapour pressure data, the distinctly different enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation are calculated, using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Such a determination of both the enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation of complexes, which sublime and melt congruently, does not appear to have been reported in the literature to date.

The system (1-x)PbTiO3-(x)BiAlO3 has been investigated with regard to its solid solubility, crystal structure, microstructure, and ferroelectric transition. The unit cell volume and the tetragonality exhibit anomalous behavior near x=0.10. The Curie point (T-C) of PbTiO3 was however found to be nearly unchanged. The study seems to suggest that the decrease in the stability of the ferroelectric state due to dilution of the Ti-sublattice by smaller sized Al+3 ions is compensated by the increase in the ferroelectric stability by the Bi+3 ions.

A microstructural and X-ray investigation of Ti-AI-Mo alloys Ti-31 Al-15 Mo, Ti-31 Al-13 Mo, Ti-31Al-9Mo and Ti-35Al-9Mo (containing the Ti3Al, TiAl and β phases) indicates that the existing phase diagram of the ternary system for this composition range published by Ge Dhzhi-Min and Pylaeva is in error above 1473 K. An analysis of phase relations reveals that the error has arisen from their use of the Ti-AI diagram due to Bumps, Kessler and Hansen as a basis for generating the ternary. It is shown that a phase diagram of the ternary, consistent with the experimental results, can be generated using a version of the Ti-AI system due to Margolin. Simple geometric arguments are used to build up a new semi-quantitative description of the Ti-AI-Mo system which can be used as a basis for a detailed investigation of phase equilibria in this system.

The system (1 - x)PbTiO3 - (x)BiAlO3 has been studied with regard to its structure and phase transition behaviour using x-ray, neutron and dielectric measurements. The structure is tetragonal within the solid solubility limit (x < 0.25). Interatomic distance analysis revealed that the Pb-O bond lengths remain unaffected and the only the Ti-O lengths are altered by BiAlO3 substitution. The results are suggestive of a crossover from and A-site & B site driven ferroelectric system for x = 0 to a dominant A-site driven ferroelectric system for higher x. This cross-over is brought about by (i) a reduction in the contribution to the ferroelectric stability from B-site cations due to dilution of the Ti-sublattice by Al and (ii) a reinforcement to the stability of the ferroelectric state by the A-site cations by the Bi+3 cations..

The layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Co with trivalent cations decompose irreversibly to yield oxides with the spinel structure. Spinel formation is aided by the oxidation of Co(II) to Co(III) in the ambient atmosphere. When the decomposition is carried out under N-2, the oxidation of Co(II) is suppressed, and the resulting oxide has the rock salt structure. Thus, the Co-Al-CO32-/Cl- LDHs yield oxides of the type Co1- Al-x(2x/3)rectangle O-x/3, which are highly metastable, given the large defect concentration. This defect oxide rapidly reverts back to the original hydroxide on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution. Interlayer NO3- anions, on the other hand, decompose generating a highly oxidizing atmosphere, whereby the Co-Al-NO3- LDH decomposes to form the spinel phase even in a N-2 atmosphere. The oxide with the defect rock salt structure formed by the thermal decomposition of the Co-Fe-CO32- LDH under N2, on soaking in a Na2CO3 solution, follows a different kinetic pathway and undergoes a solution transformation into the inverse spinel Co(Co, Fe)(2)O-4. Fe3+ has a low octahedral crystal field stabilization energy and therefore prefers the tetrahedral coordination offered by the structure of the inverse spinel rather than the octahedral coordination of the parent LDH. Similar considerations do not hold in the case of Ga- and In-containing LDHs, given the considerable barriers to the diffusion of M3+ (M=Ga, In) from octahedral to tetrahedral sites owing to their large size. Consequently, the In-containing oxide residue reverts back to the parent hydroxide, whereas this reconstruction is partial in the case of the Ga-containing oxide. These studies show that the reversible thermal behavior offers a competing kinetic pathway to spinel formation. Suppression of the latter induces the reversible behavior in an LDH that otherwise decomposes irreversibly to the spinel.

A hybrid computer for structure factor calculations in X-ray crystallography is described. The computer can calculate three-dimensional structure factors of up to 24 atoms in a single run and can generate the scatter functions of well over 100 atoms using Vand et al., or Forsyth and Wells approximations. The computer is essentially a digital computer with analog function generators, thus combining to advantage the economic data storage of digital systems and simple computing circuitry of analog systems. The digital part serially selects the data, computes and feeds the arguments into specially developed high precision digital-analog function generators, the outputs of which being d.c. voltages, are further processed by analog circuits and finally the sequential adder, which employs a novel digital voltmeter circuit, converts them back into digital form and accumulates them in a dekatron counter which displays the final result. The computer is also capable of carrying out 1-, 2-, or 3-dimensional Fourier summation, although in this case, the lack of sufficient storage space for the large number of coefficients involved, is a serious limitation at present.
