DNA amplification using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in a small volume is used in Lab-on-a-chip systems involving DNA manipulation. For few microliters of volume of liquid, it becomes difficult to measure and monitor the thermal profile accurately and reproducibly, which is an essential requirement for successful amplification. Conventional temperature sensors are either not biocompatible or too large and hence positioned away from the liquid leading to calibration errors. In this work we present a fluorescence based detection technique that is completely biocompatible and measures directly the liquid temperature. PCR is demonstrated in a 3 ILL silicon-glass microfabricated device using non-contact induction heating whose temperature is controlled using fluorescence feedback from SYBR green I dye molecules intercalated within sensor DNA. The performance is compared with temperature feedback using a thermocouple sensor. Melting curve followed by gel electrophoresis is used to confirm product specificity after the PCR cycles. Tower platforms, with instrumentation at six levels above the surface to a height of 30 m, were used to record various atmospheric parameters in the surface layer. Sensors for measuring both mean and fluctuating quantities were used, with the majority of them indigenously built. Soil temperature sensors up to a depth of 30 cm from the surface were among the variables connected to the mean data logger. A PC-based data acquisition system built at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, IISc, was used to acquire the data from fast response sensors. This paper reports the various components of a typical MONTBLEX tower observatory and describes the actual experiments carried out in the surface layer at four sites over the monsoon trough region as a part of the MONTBLEX programme. It also describes and discusses several checks made on randomly selected tower data-sets acquired during the experiment. Checks made include visual inspection of time traces from various sensors, comparative plots of sensors measuring the same variable, wind and temperature profile plots calculation of roughness lengths, statistical and stability parameters, diurnal variation of stability parameters, and plots of probability density and energy spectrum for the different sensors. Results from these checks are found to be very encouraging and reveal the potential for further detailed analysis to understand more about surface layer characteristics.

This paper presents the instrumentation and control architecture for a laboratory based two-stage 4-bed silica gel + water adsorption system. The system consists of primarily two fluids: refrigerant (water vapour) and heat transfer fluid (water) flowing through various components. Heat input to the system is simulated using multiple heaters and ambient air is used as the heat sink. The laboratory setup incorporates a real time National Instruments (NI) controller to control several digital and analog valves, heaters, pumps and fans along with simultaneous data acquisition from various flow, pressure and temperature sensors. The paper also presents in detail the various automated and manual tasks required for successful operation of the system. Finally the system pressure and temperature dynamics are reported and its performance evaluated for various cycle times. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The criterion for the design of a temperature-compensated reference electrode for non-isothermal galvanic sensors is deduced from the basic flux equations of irreversible thermodynamics. It is shown that when the Seebeck coefficient of the non-isothermal cell using a solid oxygen ion-conducting electrolyte under pure oxygen is equal to the relative partial molar entropy of oxygen in the reference electrode divided by 4F, then the EMF of the non-isothermal cell is the same as that of an isothermal cell with the same electrodes operating at the higher temperature. By measuring the temperature of the melt alone and the EMF of the non-isothermal galvanic sensor, one can derive the chemical potential or the concentration of oxygen in a corrosive medium. The theory is experimentally checked using sensors for oxygen in liquid copper constructed with various metal+oxide electrodes and fully stabilised (CaO)ZrO2 as the electrolyte. To satisfy the exact condition for temperature compensation it is often necessary to have the metal or oxide as a solid solution in the reference electrode.

Room-temperature sensing characteristics for H-2, ethanol, NH3, H2S and water have been investigated with thick-film sensors based on GaN nanoparticles, prepared by a simple chemical route. In general, GaN nanoparticles exhibit satisfactory sensor properties for these gases and vapors even at room temperature. The sensitivity for ethanol is found to be highest, the sensitivity and recovery times being smallest. Gas sensor properties of GaN seem to be related to intrinsic defects, which act as sorption sites for the gas molecules. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Donor-doped n-BaTiO3 polycrystalline ceramics show a strong negative temperature coefficient of resistivity below the orthorhombic-rhombohedral phase transition point, from 10(2-3) Omega cm af 190 K to 10(10-13) Omega cm at less than or similar to 50 K, with thermal coefficient of resistance alpha = 20-23% K-1. Stable thermal sensors for low-temperature applications are realized therefrom. The negative temperature coefficient of resistivity region can be modified by substituting isovalent ions in the lattice. Highly nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) curves are observed at low temperatures, with a voltage maximum followed by the negative differential resistance. The I-V curves are sensitive to dissipation so that cryogenic sensors can be fabricated for liquid level control, flow rate monitoring, radiation detection or in-rush voltage limitation.

This paper presents concepts, designs, and working prototypes of enhanced laparoscopic surgical tools. The enhancements are in equipping the tool with force and temperature sensing as well as image acquisition for stereo vision. Just as the pupils of our eyes are adequately spaced out and the distance between them is adjustable, two minute cameras mounted on a mechanism in our design can be moved closer or farther apart inside the inflated abdomen during the surgery. The cameras are fitted to a deployable mechanism consisting of flexural joints so that they can be inserted through a small incision and then deployed and moved as needed.A temperature sensor and a force sensor are mounted on either of the gripping faces of the surgical grasping tool to measure the temperature and gripping force, which need to be controlled for safe laparoscopic surgery. The sensors are small enough and hence they do not cause interference during surgery and insertion.Prototyping and working of the enhanced laparoscopic tool are presented with details

Sodium doped zinc oxide (Na:ZnO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates at substrate temperatures 300,400 and 500 degrees C by a novel nebulizer spray method. X-ray diffraction shows that all the films are polycrystalline in nature having hexagonal structure with high preferential orientation along (0 0 2) plane. High resolution SEM studies reveal the formation of Na-doped ZnO films having uniformly distributed nano-rods over the entire surface of the substrates at 400 degrees C. The complex impedance of the ZnO nano-rods shows two distinguished semicircles and the diameter of the arcs got decreased in diameter as the temperature increases from 170 to 270 degrees C and thereafter slightly increased. A new technique based on luminescent molecular sensors is utilized in these series of experiments for measurement of temperatures in material removal processes. 2-Dimensional machining of metals at low speeds and surface grinding configurations are used as the model experimental systems to understand the efficacy of this experimental technique. The experiments were conducted with a series of luminescent sensors and binder combinations for the temperature measurement. The luminescence of the sensor was measured through a charge-coupled device imaging camera, and intensive calibration exercises were performed on these sensors. Excellent agreement in the temperature fields measured through this new experimental approach and traditional infrared thermography is seen here. This technique offers the unique capability of allowing measurement of temperatures in the presence of a lubricant, akin to manufacturing conditions in situ. Extension of the technique to measure the temperature field at the tool-chip contact is described.

Simultaneous measurements of thickness and temperature profile of the lubricant film at chip-tool interface during machining have been studied in this experimental programme. Conventional techniques such as thermography can only provide temperature measurement under controlled environment in a laboratory and without the addition of lubricant. The present study builds on the capabilities of luminescent sensors in addition to direct image based observations of the chip-tool interface. A suite of experiments conducted using different types of sensors are reported in this paper, especially noteworthy are concomitant measures of thickness and temperature of the lubricant. A temperature compensation method is proposed for CNT-composite strain sensors. CNT-composite sensors are fabricated on an elastic polymer substrate having known thermo-mechanical properties to introduce thermo-mechanical strain and further calibration of the sensor. Strain is induced on the sensor by bending the substrate as a cantilever configuration. Response of the sensor is measured using a bridge circuit method. Induced strain in the beam is determined using beam theory. The sensors are characterized for different CNT concentrations and at various temperatures. A model based temperature compensation scheme is proposed and verified experimentally. The result proves the ability of CNT-nanocomposite strain sensors to be used under varying temperature applications. A method is proposed to determine the strain and temperature simultaneously. The CNT sensors are simple to fabricate in complex patterns with excellent repeatability and do not require bonding layer.

This paper describes the design and development of a thermoelectric gas sensor suitable for the detection of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In order to enhance the seebeck coefficient of the sensor, we have deposited chromium metal films on a limited area of the glass substrate. Tin oxide thin film was deposited on top of these metal films. The resulting metal/semiconductor film exhibits a high seebeck coefficient of 400 mu V/ degrees C. Platinum catalyst film deposited on the oxide film to create the necessary temperature gradient resulted in further enhancement in the sensitivity of the sensor to target gases. The sensor shows high sensitivity to ppm-change in the concentration of target hydrocarbons at a relatively low temperature of 120 degrees C.

Infrared Earth sensors are used in spacecraft for attitude sensing. Their accuracy is limited by systematic and random errors. Dominant sources of systematic errors are analyzed for a typical scanning infrared Earth sensor used in a remote-sensing satellite in a 900-km sun-synchronous orbit. The errors considered arise from 1) seasonable variation of infrared radiation, 2) oblate shape of the Earth, 3) ambient temperature of sensors, 4) changes in spin/scan period, and 5) misalignment of the axis of the sensors. Simple relations are derived using least-squares curve fitting for onboard correction of these errors. With these, it is possible to improve the accuracy of attitude determination by eight fold and achieve performance comparable to ground-based post-facto attitude computation.

The high-temperature superconductors are complex oxides, generally containing two-dimensional CuO2 sheets. Various families of the cuprate superconductors are described, paying special attention to aspects related to oxygen stoichiometry, phase stability, synthesis and chemical manipulation of charge carriers. Other aspects discussed are chemical applications of cuprates, possibly as gas sensors and copper-free oxide superconductors. All but the substituted Nd and Pr cuprates are hole-superconductors. Several families of cuprates show a nearly constant n(h) at maximum T(c). Besides this universality, the cuprates exhibit a number of striking common features. Based on Cu(2p) photoemission studies, it is found that the Cu-O charge-transfer energy, DELTA, and the Cu(3d)-O(2p) hybridization strength, t(pd), are key factors in the superconductivity of cuprates. The relative intensity of the satellite in the Cu(2p) core-level spectra, the polarizability of the CuO2 sheets as well as the hole concentration are related to DELTA/t(pd). These chemical bonding factors have to be explicitly taken into account in any model for superconductivity of the cuprates.
