A new technique based on luminescent molecular sensors is utilized in these series of experiments for measurement of temperatures in material removal processes. 2-Dimensional machining of metals at low speeds and surface grinding configurations are used as the model experimental systems to understand the efficacy of this experimental technique. The experiments were conducted with a series of luminescent sensors and binder combinations for the temperature measurement. The luminescence of the sensor was measured through a charge-coupled device imaging camera, and intensive calibration exercises were performed on these sensors. Excellent agreement in the temperature fields measured through this new experimental approach and traditional infrared thermography is seen here. This technique offers the unique capability of allowing measurement of temperatures in the presence of a lubricant, akin to manufacturing conditions in situ. Extension of the technique to measure the temperature field at the tool-chip contact is described.

The dielectric constants of lead iron niobate (PFN) and 40% lead zinc niobate (PZN) added to lead iron niobate (PFN0.6-PZN(0.4)) have been measured as a function of pressure up to 6 GPa under isothermal conditions between room temperature and 348 K. The relaxer transition temperature measured at 1 kHz excitation frequency varies at a rate -24.5 K/GPa for PFN and at a rate of - 28.8 K/GPa for the PFN0.6-PZN(0.4) composition.

A study of compression waves produced in a viscous heat-conducting gas by the impulsive start of a one-dimensional piston and by the inpulsive change of piston wall temperature is made using Laplace Transform Technique for Prandt1 number unity. Expressions for velocity, temperature and density have also been obtained using small-time expansion procedure in this case. For arbitrary Prandt1 number solutions have been developed using large-time expansion procedure. A number of graphs exhibiting the distribution of the fluid velocity, temperature and density have been drawn.

We present insightful results on the kinetics of photodarkening (PD) in Ge(x)As(45-x)Se(55) glasses at the ambient and liquid helium temperatures when the network rigidity is increased by varying x from 0 to 16. We observe a many fold change in PD and its kinetics with decreasing network flexibility and temperature. Moreover, temporal evolution of PD shows a dramatic change with increasing x. The effect of deposition temperature on residual stress evolution with temperature in Ti-rich NiTi films deposited on silicon substrates was studied. Ti-rich NiTi films were deposited on 3? Si (100) substrates by DC magnetron sputtering at three deposition temperatures (300, 350 and 400 degrees C) with subsequent annealing in vacuum at their respective deposition temperatures for 4 h. The initial value of residual stress was found to be the highest for the film deposited and annealed at 400 degrees C and the lowest for the film deposited and annealed at 300 degrees C. All the three films were found to be amorphous in the as-deposited and annealed conditions. The nature of the stress response with temperature on heating in the first cycle (room temperature to 450 degrees C) was similar for all three films although the spike in tensile stress, which occurs at similar to 330 degrees C, was significantly higher in the film deposited and annealed at 300 degrees C. All the films were also found to undergo partial crystallisation on heating up to 450 degrees C and this resulted in decrease in the stress values around 5560 degrees C in the cooling cycle. The stress response with temperature in the second thermal cycle (room temperature to 450 degrees C and back), which is reflective of the intrinsic film behaviour, was found to be similar in all cases and the elastic modulus determined from the stress response was also more or less identical. The three deposition temperatures were also not found to have a significant effect on the transformation characteristics of these films such as transformation start and finish temperatures, recovery stress and hysteresis.

Raman studies on Ca4Al2O5.7Fe2As2 superconductor in the temperature range of 5K to 300 K, covering the superconducting transition temperature T-c = 28.3 K, reveal that the Raman mode at similar to 230 cm(-1) shows a sharp jump in frequency by similar to 2% and linewidth increases by similar to 175% at T-o similar to 60 K. Below T-o, anomalous softening of the mode frequency and a large decrease by similar to 10 cm(-1) in the linewidth are observed. These precursor effects at T-0 (similar to 2T(c)) are attributed to significant superconducting fluctuations, possibly enhanced due to reduced dimensionality arising from weak coupling between the well separated (similar to 15 angstrom) Fe-As layers in the unit cell. A large blue-shift of the mode frequency between 300 K and 60 K (similar to 7%) indicates strong spin-phonon coupling in this superconductor. This paper presents the after shock heated structural and morphological studies of chromium film coated on hypersonic test model as a passive drag reduction element. The structural changes and the composition of phases of chromium due to shock heating (2850 K) are characterized using X-ray diffraction studies. Surface morphology changes of chromium coating have been studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) before and after shock heating. Significant amount of chromium ablation and sublimation from the model surface is noticed from SEM micrographs. Traces of randomly oriented chromium oxides formed along the coated surface confirm surface reaction of chromium with oxygen present behind the shock. Large traces of amorphous chromium oxide phases are also observed.

Dielectric measurements carried out on drop casted from solution of emeraldine base form of polyaniline films in the temperature range 30-300 degrees C revealed occurrence of two maxima in the loss tangent as a function of temperature. The activation energies corresponding to these two relaxation processes were found to be similar to 0.5 eV and similar to 1.5 eV. The occurrence of one relaxation peak in the dispersion curve of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests the absence of microphase separation in the film. Thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopic measurements showed that the films retained its integrity up to 300 degrees C. The dielectric relaxation at higher temperatures with large activation energy of 1.5 eV is attributed to increase in the barrier potential due to decrease in the polymer conjugation as a result of wide amplitude motion of the chain segments well above the glass transition temperature. This paper deals with a combined forming and fracture limit diagram and void coalescence analysis for the aluminum alloy Al 1145 alloy sheets of 1.8 mm thickness, annealed at four different temperatures, namely 200, 250, 300, and 350 A degrees C. At different annealing temperatures these sheets were examined for their effects on microstructure, tensile properties, formability, void coalescence, and texture. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images taken from the fractured surfaces were examined. The tensile properties and formability of sheet metals were correlated with fractography features and void analysis. The variation of formability parameters, normal anisotropy of sheet metals, and void coalescence parameters were compared with texture analysis.

Epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) thin films are grown on LaAlO3 (100) and SrTiO3 (100) substrates by pulsed laser ablation. By tuning the growth parameters, we are able to enhance the ferromagnetic transition temperature (T-C) up to 262 K as evident from ac susceptibility, dc magnetization, and resistivity measurements. The magnitude of T-C is the same as that for the bulk stoichiometric LSCO illustrating the high quality of the grown films. Detailed structural analysis clearly reveals that the induced strain in the LSCO film has no role behind this enhancement; in fact, the determining factor is the oxygen stoichiometry. The films also exhibit ageing effect as the T-C decreases with time. This is considered in terms of gradual change in the oxygen stoichiometry through diffusion process as the time progresses. We demonstrate a unique shear-induced crystallization phenomenon above the equilibrium freezing temperature (T-K(o)) in weakly swollen isotropic (L-i) and lamellar (L-alpha) mesophases with bilayers formed in a cationic-anionic mixed surfactant system. Synchrotron rheological X-ray diffraction study reveals the crystallization transition to be reversible under shear (i.e., on stopping the shear, the nonequilibrium crystalline phase L-c melts back to the equilibrium mesophase). This is different from the shear-driven crystallization below T-K(o), which is irreversible. Rheological optical observations show that the growth of the crystalline phase occurs through a preordering of the L-i phase to an L-alpha phase induced by shear flow, before the nucleation of the Lc phase. Shear diagram of the L-i phase constructed in the parameter space of shear rate ((gamma)) over dot vs. temperature exhibits L-i -> L-c and L-i -> L-alpha transitions above the equilibrium crystallization temperature (T-K(o)), in addition to the irreversible shear-driven nucleation of L-c in the L-i phase below T-K(o). In addition to revealing a unique class of nonequilibrium phase transition, the present study urges a unique approach toward understanding shear-induced phenomena in concentrated mesophases of mixed amphiphilic systems.

The effect of Zr, Hf, and Sn in BaTiO3 has been investigated at close composition intervals in the dilute concentration limit. Detailed structural analysis by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction revealed that merely 2mol. % of Zr, Sn, and Hf stabilizes a coexistence of orthorhombic (Amm2) and tetragonal (P4mm) phases at room temperature. As a consequence, all the three systems show substantial enhancement in the longitudinal piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)), with Sn modification exhibiting the highest value similar to 425 pC/N. For decades it has been a well-known fact that among the few ferroelectric compounds in the perovskite family, namely, BaTiO3, KNbO3, PbTiO3, and Na1/2Bi1/2TiO3, the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of BaTiO3 are considerably higher than the others in polycrystalline form at room temperature. Further, similar to ferroelectric alloys exhibiting morphotropic phase boundary, single crystals of BaTiO3 exhibit anomalously large piezoelectric response when poled away from the direction of spontaneous polarization at room temperature. These anomalous features in BaTiO3 remained unexplained so far from the structural standpoint. In this work, we have used high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, atomic resolution aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, in conjunction with a powder poling technique, to reveal that at 300 K (i) the equilibrium state of BaTiO3 is characterized by coexistence of metastable monoclinic Pm and orthorhombic (Amm2) phases along with the tetragonal phase, and (ii) strong electric field switches the polarization direction from the 001] direction towards the 101] direction. These results suggest that BaTiO3 at room temperature is within an instability regime, and that this instability is the fundamental factor responsible for the anomalous dielectric and piezoelectric properties of BaTiO3 as compared to the other homologous ferroelectric perovskite compounds at room temperature. Pure BaTiO3 at room temperature is therefore more akin to lead-based ferroelectric alloys close to the morphotropic phase boundary where polarization rotation and field induced ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transformations play a fundamental role in influencing the dielectric and piezoelectric behavior.
