With an application of the upper bound finite element limit analysis, the vertical pullout capacity of a group of two horizontal strip plate anchors, with the common vertical axis and placed in a cohesive-frictional soil, has been computed. The variation of the uplift factors Fc, Fq and Fy, due to the contributions of soil cohesion, surcharge pressure and unit weight, respectively, has been evaluated for different combinations of S/B and H/B. As compared to single isolated anchor, the group of two anchors generates significantly greater magnitude of Fc for Φ ≤ 20° especially with greater values of H/B and under fully bonded anchor-soil interface condition. The factor Fc attains almost the maximum value when the upper anchor plate is placed midway between ground surface and the lower anchor plate. The factors Fq and Fy, on the other hand, for a group of two anchors are found to remain almost equal to that of a single isolated anchor as long as the levels of the lower plate in the group and the single isolated anchor are kept the same.

High-pressure magnetic susceptibility measurements have been carried out on Fe(dipy)2(NCS)2 and Fe(phen)2(NCS)2 in the pressure range 1–10 kbar and tempeature range 80–300 K in order to investigate the factors responsible for the spin-state transitions. The transitions change from first order to second or higher order upon application of pressure. The temperature variation of the susceptibility at different pressures has been analysed quantitatively within the framework of available models. It is shown that the relative magnitudes of the ΔG0 of high-spin and low-spin conversion and the ferromagnetic interaction between high-spin complexes determines the nature of the transition.

A desalination system is a complex multi energy domain system comprising power/energy flow across several domains such as electrical, thermal, and hydraulic. The dynamic modeling of a desalination system that comprehensively addresses all these multi energy domains is not adequately addressed in the literature. This paper proposes to address the issue of modeling the various energy domains for the case of a single stage flash evaporation desalination system. This paper presents a detailed bond graph modeling of a desalination unit with seamless integration of the power flow across electrical, thermal, and hydraulic domains. The paper further proposes a performance index function that leads to the tracking of the optimal chamber pressure giving the optimal flow rate for a given unit of energy expended. The model has been validated in steady state conditions by simulation and experimentation.

High pressure resistivity measurements on Se100-xTex, glasses for 0≤x≤30 are reported. Two composition regions, where the transport and transformation behaviour are different, are identified. For 0≤x≤6, there is a first-order-like transformation to metallic crystalline states, while for x>6 the transformation appears to be continuous. Glass-transition temperatures also show differences in trends as a function of composition around 6% Te. An attempt is made to explain the composition-dependent trends on the basis of known structural features of selenium glasses and of the nature of tellurium bonding. At concentrations with up to 6% tellurium, Te most likely enters selenium chain terminations, substituting for negatively charged Se1- defects, while at larger concentrations, tellurium probably enters chains and rings by a random substitution.

Resistivity behaviour of PbO---PbX2 (X=F,Cl) glasses has been investigated as a function of pressure at laboratory temperature. All PbO---PbX2 glasses undergo crystallization under pressure and the resistivities of crystallized samples are lower than the corresponding glasses. Transitions in PbO---PbF2 glasses exhibit a first order behaviour while transitions in PbO---PbCl2 glasses possess features of a continuous transition. The differences in the pressure behaviour of the two glass systems have been attributed to the differences in the ionic sizes of F− and Cl− ions and also to pressure induced modifications of Pb---O bonding.

The metal to insulator transition in the charge-transfer NiS2-xSex compound has been investigated through infrared reflectivity. Measurements performed by applying pressure to pure NiS2 (lattice contraction) and by Se alloying (lattice expansion) reveal that in both cases an anomalous metallic state is obtained. We find that optical results are not compatible with the linear Se-alloying vs pressure-scaling relation previously established through transport, thus pointing out the substantially different microscopic origin of the two transitions.

Eclogites and their retrogressed equivalents from the eastern unit of the Glenelg-Attadale Inlier in NW Scotland preserve much microstructural evidence that indicates that very high-pressure/temperature eclogite facies conditions were reached, and followed by decompression and hydration during exhumation. Rutile exsolution in garnet and quartz exsolution in omphacite and titanite formed through mineral reactions during high P-T peak metamorphism. Isochemical phase diagrams modeled for samples from three different locations indicate that the outer part of the eastern unit preserves a peak metamorphic condition of c. 850-1000 degrees C at 18-25 kbar, whereas the central part has a similar pressure (c. 23 kbar), but a lower temperature (c. 670 degrees C). Due to the limitations in the phase diagram calculations the estimated P-T conditions represent the minimum conditions attained by the peak metamorphic assemblage, and the pre-exsoived peak assemblage probably stabilized at a higher pressure. This observation is strongly supported by the presence of exsolution microstructures. The present results demonstrate that the eastern unit experienced very high P-T conditions during peak metamorphism and a tight clockwise P-T trajectory and provide the first indication of possible ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism in the Glenelg eclogites. Objective To perform spectral analysis of noise generated by equipments and activities in a level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and measure the real time sequential hourly noise levels over a 15 day period. Methods Noise generated in the NICU by individual equipments and activities were recorded with a digital spectral sound analyzer to perform spectral analysis over 0.5–8 KHz. Sequential hourly noise level measurements in all the rooms of the NICU were done for 15 days using a digital sound pressure level meter. Independent sample t test and one way ANOVA were used to examine the statistical significance of the results. The study has a 90% power to detect at least 4 dB differences from the recommended maximum of 50 dB with 95 % confidence. Results The mean noise levels in the ventilator room and stable room were 19.99 dB (A) sound pressure level (SPL) and 11.81 dB (A) SPL higher than the maximum recommended of 50 dB (A) respectively (p < 0.001). The equipments generated 19.11 dB SPL higher than the recommended norms in 1–8 KHz spectrum. The activities generated 21.49 dB SPL higher than the recommended norms in 1–8 KHz spectrum (p< 0.001). The ventilator and nebulisers produced excess noise of 8.5 dB SPL at the 0.5 KHz spectrum. Conclusion Noise level in the NICU is unacceptably high. Spectral analysis of equipment and activity noise have shown noise predominantly in the 1–8 KHz spectrum. These levels warrant immediate implementation of noise reduction protocols as a standard of care in the NICU.

We report the synthesis of Cd-substituted ZnO nanostructures (Zn1-xCdxO with x up to approximate to 0.09) by the high-pressure solution growth method. The synthesized nanostructures comprise nanocrystals that are both particles (similar to 10-15 nm) and rods which grow along the [002] direction as established by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Rietveld analysis of the XRD data shows a monotonic increase of the unit cell volume with the increase of Cd concentration. The optical absorption, as well as the photoluminescence (PL), shows a red shift on Cd substitution. The line width of the PL spectrum is related to the strain inhomogeneity and it peaks in the region where the CdO phase separates from the Zn1-xCdxO nanostructures. The time-resolved photoemission showed a long-lived (similar to 10 ns) component. We propose that the PL behaviour of the Zn1-xCdxO is dominated by strain in the sample with the red shift of the PL linked to the expansion of the unit cell volume on Cd substitution.

Accurate mass flow measurement is very important in various monitoring and control applications. This paper proposes a novel method of fluid flow measurement by compensating the pressure drop across the ends of measuring unit using a compensating pump. The pressure drop due to the flow is balanced by a feedback control loop. This is a null-deflection type of measurement. As the insertion of such a measuring unit does not affect the functioning of the systems, this is also a non-disruptive flow measurement method. The implementation and design of such a unit are discussed. The system is modeled and simulated using the bond graph technique and it is experimentally validated. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The integral diaphragm pressure transducers machined out of precipitation hardened martensite stainless steel (APX4) are widely used for propellant pressure measurements in space applications. These transducers are expected to exhibit dimensional stability and linearity for their entire useful life. These vital factors are very critical for the reliable performance and dependability of the pressure transducers. However, these transducers invariably develop internal stresses during various stages of machining. These stresses have an adverse effect on the performance of the transducers causing deviation from linearity. In order to eliminate these possibilities, it was planned to cryotreat the machined transducers to improve both the long-term linearity and dimensional stability. To study these effects, an experimental cryotreatment unit was designed and developed based on the concept of indirect cooling using the concept of cold nitrogen gas forced closed loop convection currents. The system has the capability of cryotreating large number of samples for varied rates of cooling, soaking and warm-up. After obtaining the initial levels of residual stress and retained austenite using X-ray diffraction techniques, the pressure transducers were cryotreated at 98 K for 36 h. Immediately after cryotreatment, the transducers were tempered at 510 degrees C for 3 h in vacuum furnace. Results after cryo treatment clearly indicated significant reduction in residual stress levels and conversion of retained austenite to martensite. These changes have brought in improvements in long term zero drift and dimensional stability. The cryotreated pressure transducers have been incorporated for actual space applications. Room-temperature Raman spectra of LiRbSO4 were studied as a function of pressure up to 170 kbar for two different orientations of the crystal. Four pressure-induced phase transitions at about 2, 17, 32 and 57 kbar were observed. The transitions at 17 and 57 kbar have slow kinetics, taking about 4 h for their completion. These phase transitions are associated with the orientations of the SO4 ions in the unit cell.
