Test results reported on several natural sensitive soils show significant anisotropy of the yield curves, which are generally oriented along the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K-0) axis. An attempt is made in this paper to explain the anisotropy in yielding from microstructural considerations. An elliptic pore, with particle domains aligned along the periphery of the pore, and with the major axis of the pore being oriented along the direction of the in situ major principal stress, is chosen as the unit of microstructure. An analysis of forces at the interdomain contacts around the ellipse is carried out with reference to experimentally determined yield stress conditions of one soil, and a yield criteria is defined. The analysis, with the proposed yield criteria, enables one to define the complete yield curve for any other soil from the results of only two tests (one constant eta compression test with eta close to eta(K?0), where eta is the stress ratio (= q/p) and eta(K?0) is the stress ratio corresponding to anisotropic K-0 compression, and another undrained shear test). Predicted yield curves are compared with experimental yield curves of several soils reported in the literature.

The potential energy surfaces of the HCN<->HNC and LiCN<->LiNC isomerization processes were determined by ab initio theory using fully optimized triple-zeta double polarization types of basis sets. Both the MP2 corrections and the QCISD level of calculations were performed to correct for the electron correlation. Results show that electron correlation has a considerable influence on the energetics and structures. Analysis of the intramolecular bond rearrangement processes reveals that, in both cases, H (or Li+) migrates in an almost elliptic path in the plane of the molecule. In HCN<->HNC, the migrating hydrogen interacts with the in-plane pi,pi* orbitals of CN, leading to a decrease in the C-N bond order. In LiCN<->LiNC, Li+ does not interact with the corresponding pi,pi* orbitals of CN.

Sr2FeMoO6 oxides exhibit a half-metallic ferromagnetic (HM-FM) ground state and peculiar magnetic and magnetotransport properties, which are interesting for applications in the emerging field of spintronics and attractive for fundamental research in the field of heavily correlated electron systems. Sr2FeWO6 is an insulator with an antiferromagnetic (I-AFM) ground state. The solid solutions Sr2FeMoxW1-xO6 also have peculiar properties-W doping enhances chemical order which allows stabilization of the HM-FM state; as the W content exceeds a certain value a metal to insulator transition (MIT) occurs. The role of W in determining the physical properties of Sr2FeMoxW1-xO6 systems has been a matter of intense investigation. This work deals with the problem of the structural and electronic changes related to the MIT from a local perspective by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). This technique allows one to probe in detail the local structure and electronic modifications around selected absorber ions (W, Mo, Fe and Sr in our case). The results of XAS analysis in the whole composition range (0 <= x <= 1), in the near edge (XANES) and extended (EXAFS) regions, demonstrate an abrupt change of the local structure around the Fe and Mo sites at the critical composition, x(c). This change represents the microstructural counterpart associated with the MIT. Conversely, the local structure and electronic configuration of W ions remain unaltered in the whole composition range, suggesting indirect participation of W in the MIT.

Abstract-The success of automatic speaker recognition in laboratory environments suggests applications in forensic science for establishing the Identity of individuals on the basis of features extracted from speech. A theoretical model for such a verification scheme for continuous normaliy distributed featureIss developed. The three cases of using a) single feature, b)multipliendependent measurements of a single feature, and c)multpleindependent features are explored. The number iofndependent features needed for areliable personal identification is computed based on the theoretcal model and an expklatory study of some speech featues.

Polyaniline (PANI)/para-toluene sulfonic acid (pTSA) and PANI/pTSA-TiO2 composites were prepared using chemical method and characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrical conductivity and magnetic properties were also measured. In corroboration with XRD, the micrographs of SEM indicated the homogeneous dispersion of TiO nanoparticles in bulk PANI/pTSA matrix. Conductivity of the PANI/pTSA-TiO2 was higher than the PAN[/pTSA, and the maximum conductivity obtained was 9.48 (S/cm) at 5 wt% of TiO2. Using SQUID magnetometer, it was found that PANI/pTSA was either paramagnetic or weakly ferromagnetic from 300 K down to 5 K with H-C approximate to 30 Oe and M-r approximate to 0.015 emu/g. On the other hand,PANI/pTSA-TiO2 was diamagnetic from 300 K down to about 50 K and below which it was weakly ferromagnetic. Furthermore, a nearly temperature-independent magnetization was observed in both the cases down to 50 K and below which the magnetization increased rapidly (a Curie like susceptibility was observed). The Pauli susceptibility (chi(pauli)) was calculated to be about 4.8 X 10(-5) and 1.6 x 10(-5)emug(-1) Oe(-1) K for PANI/pTSA and PANI/pTSA-TiO2, respectively.

Al-5 wt pct Si alloy is processed by upset forging in the temperature range 300 K to 800 K and in the strain rate range 0.02 to 200 s−1. The hardness and tensile properties of the product have been studied. A “safe” window in the strain rate-temperature field has been identified for processing of this alloy to obtain maximum tensile ductility in the product. For the above strain rate range, the temperature range of processing is 550 K to 700 K for obtaining high ductility in the product. On the basis of microstructure and the ductility of the product, the temperature-strain rate regimes of damage due to cavity formation at particles and wedge cracking have been isolated for this alloy. The tensile fracture features recorded on the product specimens are in conformity with the above damage mechanisms. A high temperature treatment above ≈600 K followed by fairly fast cooling gives solid solution strengthening in the alloy at room temperature.

A cholesterol-esterifying enzyme which incorporates exogenous fatty acids into cholesterol esters in the presence of ATP and coenzyme A was demonstrated in 15-day-old rat brain. This enzyme was maximally active at pH 7.4 and distinct from the cholesterol-esterifying enzyme reported earlier (Eto and Suzuki, 1971), which has a pH optimum at 5.2 and does not require cofactors. Properties of the two enzymes have been compared. Both the enzymes showed negligible esterification with acetate and were maximally active with oleic acid. The pH 5.2 enzyme esterified desmosterol, lanosterol and cholesterol at about the same rate, while the pH 7.4 enzyme was only 50% as active ith lanosterol as it was with cholesterol and desmosterol. Phosphatidyl serine stimulated the pH 5.2 enzyme but not the pH 7.4 enzyme. Phosphatidyl choline and sodium taurocholate showed no effect on either of the enzymes. Both the enzymes were associated with particulate fractions, but the pH 7.4 enzyme was localized more in the microsomes. Purified myelin showed 2.6-fold and 1.5-fold higher specific activities of pH 5.2 and 7.4 enzymes respectively, when compared with homogenate. About 7-10% of total activity of both the enzymes was associated with purified myelin. Brain stem and spinal cord showed higher specific activity of pH 5.2 enzyme than cerebral cortex and cerebellum, while pH 7.4 enzyme specific activity was higher in cerebellum and brain stem than in cerebral cortex and spinal cord. Microsomal pH 7.4 activity showed progressive increase prior to the active period of myelination, reaching a maximum on the 15th day after birth and declined to 20% of the peak activity by 30 days. In contrast, pH 5.2 enzyme reached maximum activity about the 6th day after birth and remained at this level well into adulthood. In 15-day-old rat brain, pH 7.4 enzyme had five to six times higher specific activity than pH 5.2 enzyme, while in adults the activities were equal. The pH 7.4 enzyme showed a threefold higher specific activity than pH 5.2 enzyme in myelin from 15-day-old rats, but in adults the reverse was true. From the proton nmr studies of 2-thiocoumarin and coumarin, it is concluded that the relative interproton distances in the two oxygen heteroatom bicyclic systems are similar. The values for the phenyl ring protons do not deviate significantly from the regular hexagonal geometry, unlike bicyclic systems with nitrogens as the heteroatoms, such as diazanaphthalenes. Larger values of the indirect spin-spin couplings within the protons of the ring containing the oxygen heteroatom, compared to the values between the ortho protons in the phenyl rings in coumarin and 2-thiocoumarin, correspond to the olefinic nature of these protons. This is in contrast to results for the nitrogen heterocycles where both the rings are aromatic.

C14Ht0F3NO2, P2.Jc, a = 12.523 (4), b = 7.868(6), c = 12.874 (3)A, fl = 95.2 (2) ° , O,,, = 1.47 (4), D e = 1.47 Mg m -3, Z = 4. Final R = 0.074 for 2255 observed reflections. The carboxyl group and the phenyl ring bearing the carboxyl group are nearly coplanar whereas the two phenyl rings are inclined with respect to each other at 52.8 ° . The difference between the two polymorphs of flufenamic acid lies in the geometrical disposition of the [3-(trifluoromethyl)- phenyl]amino moiety with respect to the benzoic acid moiety. As in other fenamate structures, the carboxyl group and the imino N atom are connected through an intramolecular hydrogen bond; also, pairs of centrosymmetrically related molecules are connected through hydrogen bonds involving carboxyl groups.

Oxyphenbutazone, C19H20N203, a metabolite and perhaps the active form of phenylbutazone, is a widely used non-narcotic analgesic and anti-inflammatory pyrazolidinedione derivative. The monohydrate of the compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group Pi with two molecules in a unit cell of dimensions a -- 9.491 (4), b = 10.261 (5), c = 11.036 (3)A and ¢~ = 72.2 (1), fl = 64.3 (1), 7 = 73.0 (1) °. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an R value of 0.107 for 1498 observed reflections. The butyl group in the molecule is disordered. The hydroxyl group occupies two sites with unequal occupancies. On account of the asymmetry at the two N atoms and one of the C atoms in the central five-membered ring, the molecule can exist in eight isomeric states, of which four are sterically unfavourable. The disorder in the position of the hydroxyl group can be readily explained on the basis of the existence, with unequal abundances, of all four sterically favourable isomers. The bond lengths and angles in the molecule are similar to those in phenylbutazone. The crystal structure is stabilized by van der Waals interactions, and O-H... O hydrogen bonds involving the carbonyl and the hydroxyl groups as well as a water molecule.

Geometric constraints present in A2BO4 compounds with the tetragonal-T structure of K2NiF4 impose a strong pressure on the B---OII---B bonds and a stretching of the A---OI---A bonds in the basal planes if the tolerance factor is t congruent with RAO/√2 RBO < 1, where RAO and RBO are the sums of the A---O and B---O ionic radii. The tetragonal-T phase of La2NiO4 becomes monoclinic for Pr2NiO4, orthorhombic for La2CuO4, and tetragonal-T′ for Pr2CuO4. The atomic displacements in these distorted phases are discussed and rationalized in terms of the chemistry of the various compounds. The strong pressure on the B---OII---B bonds produces itinerant σ*x2−y2 bands and a relative stabilization of localized dz2 orbitals. Magnetic susceptibility and transport data reveal an intersection of the Fermi energy with the d2z2 levels for half the copper ions in La2CuO4; this intersection is responsible for an intrinsic localized moment associated with a configuration fluctuation; below 200 K the localized moment smoothly vanishes with decreasing temperature as the d2z2 level becomes filled. In La2NiO4, the localized moments for half-filled dz2 orbitals induce strong correlations among the σ*x2−y2 electrons above Td reverse similar, equals 200 K; at lower temperatures the σ*x2−y2 electrons appear to contribute nothing to the magnetic susceptibility, which obeys a Curie-Weiss law giving a μeff corresponding to S = 1/2, but shows no magnetic order to lowest temperatures. These surprising results are verified by comparison with the mixed systems La2Ni1−xCuxO4 and La2−2xSr2xNi1−xTixO4. The onset of a charge-density wave below 200 K is proposed for both La2CuO4 and La2NiO4, but the atomic displacements would be short-range cooperative in mixed systems. The semiconductor-metallic transitions observed in several systems are found in many cases to obey the relation Ea reverse similar, equals kTmin, where varrho = varrho0exp(−Ea/kT) and Tmin is the temperature of minimum resistivity varrho. This relation is interpreted in terms of a diffusive charge-carrier mobility with Ea reverse similar, equals ΔHm reverse similar, equals kT at T = Tmin.
