The application of the van der Pauw-Hall measurement technique to implanted samples in which the mobility varies with depth has still not been fully justified. A proof that the technique is in fact applicable in this situation is given. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

A fuzzy logic based centralized control algorithm for irrigation canals is presented. Purpose of the algorithm is to control downstream discharge and water level of pools in the canal, by adjusting discharge release from the upstream end and gates settings. The algorithm is based on the dynamic wave model (Saint-Venant equations) inversion in space, wherein the momentum equation is replaced by a fuzzy rule based model, while retaining the continuity equation in its complete form. The fuzzy rule based model is developed on fuzzification of a new mathematical model for wave velocity, the derivational details of which are given. The advantages of the fuzzy control algorithm, over other conventional control algorithms, are described. It is transparent and intuitive, and no linearizations of the governing equations are involved. Timing of the algorithm and method of computation are explained. It is shown that the tuning is easy and the computations are straightforward. The algorithm provides stable, realistic and robust outputs. The disadvantage of the algorithm is reduced precision in its outputs due to the approximation inherent in the fuzzy logic. Feed back control logic is adopted to eliminate error caused by the system disturbances as well as error caused by the reduced precision in the outputs. The algorithm is tested by applying it to water level control problem in a fictitious canal with a single pool and also in a real canal with a series of pools. It is found that results obtained from the algorithm are comparable to those obtained from conventional control algorithms.

A residual-based strategy to estimate the local truncation error in a finite volume framework for steady compressible flows is proposed. This estimator, referred to as the -parameter, is derived from the imbalance arising from the use of an exact operator on the numerical solution for conservation laws. The behaviour of the residual estimator for linear and non-linear hyperbolic problems is systematically analysed. The relationship of the residual to the global error is also studied. The -parameter is used to derive a target length scale and consequently devise a suitable criterion for refinement/derefinement. This strategy, devoid of any user-defined parameters, is validated using two standard test cases involving smooth flows. A hybrid adaptive strategy based on both the error indicators and the -parameter, for flows involving shocks is also developed. Numerical studies on several compressible flow cases show that the adaptive algorithm performs excellently well in both two and three dimensions.

We report the synthesis and properties of sphere-shaped microscale aggregates of bismuth telluride nanoplates. We obtain porous microspheres by reducing bismuth chloride and orthotelluric acid with hydrazine in the presence of thioglycolic acid-which serves as the shape-and size-directing agent-followed by room-temperature aging-which promotes nanoplate aggregation. Thin film assemblies of the nanoplate microspheres exhibit n-type behavior due to sulfur doping and a Seebeck coefficient higher than that reported for assemblies of chalcogenide nanostructures. Adaptation of our scalable approach to synthesize and hierarchically assemble nanostructures with controlled doping could be attractive for tailoring novel thermoelectric materials for applications in high-efficiency refrigeration and harvesting electricity from heat.
Analytical prediction of break-out noise from a reactive rectangular plenum with four flexible walls
Resumo:
This paper describes an analytical calculation of break-out noise from a rectangular plenum with four flexible walls by incorporating three-dimensional effects along with the acoustical and structural wave coupling phenomena. The breakout noise from rectangular plenums is important and the coupling between acoustic waves within the plenum and structural waves in the flexible plenum walls plays a critical role in prediction of the transverse transmission loss. The first step in breakout noise prediction is to calculate the inside plenum pressure field and the normal flexible plenum wall vibration by using an impedance-mobility approach, which results in a compact matrix formulation. In the impedance-mobility compact matrix (IMCM) approach, it is presumed that the coupled response can be described in terms of finite sets of the uncoupled acoustic subsystem and the structural subsystem. The flexible walls of the plenum are modeled as an unfolded plate to calculate natural frequencies and mode shapes of the uncoupled structural subsystem. The second step is to calculate the radiated sound power from the flexible walls using Kirchhoff-Helmholtz (KH) integral formulation. Analytical results are validated with finite element and boundary element (FEM-BEM) numerical models. (C) 2010 Acoustical Society of America. DOI: 10.1121/1.3463801]

Various factore controlling the preferred facial selectivity in the reductions of a number of sterically unbiased ketones have been evaluated using a semiempirical MO procedure. MNDO optimized geometries do not reveal any significant ground-state distortions which can be correlated with the observed face selectivities. Electrostatic effecta due to an approaching reagent were modeled by placing a test negative charge at a fixed distance from the carbonyl carbon on each of the two faces. A second series of calculations was carried out using the hydride ion as a test nucleophile. The latter calculations effectively include orbital interactions involving the u and u* orbitals of the newly formed bond in the reaction. The computed energy differences with the charge model are generally much larger compared to those with the hydride ion. However, both models lead to predictions which are qualitatively consistent with the experimentally determined facial preferences for most of the systems. Thus, electrostatic interactions between the nucleophile and the substrate seem to effectively determine the face selectivities in these molecules. However, there are a few exceptions in which orbital interactions are found to contribute significantly and occasionally reverse the preference dictated by electrostatic effecta. The remarkable succew of the hydride model calculations, in spite of retaining the unperturbed geometries of the substrates, points to the unimportance of torsional effeds and orbital distortions associated with the pyramidalized carbonyl unit in the transition state in most of the substrates considered. Additional experimental results are reported which provide useful calibration for the present computational approach.

The preparation of five different copper(I) complexes [CuSC(=NPh)(OAr)}L(n)]m (1-5) formed by the insertion of PhNCS into the Cu-OAr bond and the crystal structure analyses of three of them have been carried out. A monomeric species 1 (OAr = 2,6-dimethylphenoxide) is formed in the presence of excess PPh3 (n = 2, m = 1) and crystallizes as triclinic crystals with a = 12.419(4) angstrom, b = 13.298(7) angstrom, c = 15.936(3) angstrom, alpha = 67.09(3)-degrees, beta = 81.63(2)-degrees, gamma = 66.54(3)-degrees, V = 2224(2) angstrom3, and Z = 2. The structure was refined by the least-squares method to final R and R(w) values of 0.038 and 0.044, respectively, for 7186 unique reflections. Copper(I) 2,5-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxide results in the formation of a dimeric species 2 in the presence of P(OMe)3 (n = 1, m = 2), where the coordination around Cu is trigonal. Crystals of 2 were found to be orthorhombic with a = 15.691(2) angstrom, b = 18.216(3) angstrom, c = 39.198(5) angstrom, v = 11204(3) angstrom3, and Z = 8. Least-squares refinement gave final residuals of R = 0.05 and R(w) = 0.057 with 6866 unique reflections. A tetrameric species 3 results when PPh3 is replaced by P(OMe)3 in the coordination sphere of copper(I) 2,6-dimethylphenoxide. It crystallizes in the space group P1BAR with a = 11.681 (1) angstrom, b = 13.373(2) angstrom, c = 20.127(1) angstrom, a = 88.55(l)-degrees, beta = 89.65(l)-degrees, gamma = 69.28(1)-degrees, V = 2940(l) angstrom3, and Z = 2. Least-squares refinement of the structure gave final values of 0.043 and 0.05 for R and R(w) respectively using 12214 unique reflections. In addition, a dimeric species 4 is formed when 1 equiv of PPh3 is added to the copper(I) 4-methylphenoxide, while with an excess of PPh3 a monomeric species 5 is isolated. Some interconversions among these complexes are also reported.

Important issues of water and thermal history affecting ion transport in a representative plastic crystalline lithium salt electrolyte: succinonitrile (SN)-lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) are discussed here. Ionic conductivity of electrolytes with high lithium salt amounts (similar to 1 M) in SN at a particular temperature is known to be influenced both by the trans-gauche isomerism and ion association (solvation), the two most important intrinsic parameters of the plastic solvent. In the present study both water and thermal history influence SN and result in enhancement of ionic conductivity of 1 M LiClO4-SN electrolyte. Systematic observations reveal that the presence of water in varying amounts promote ion-pair dissociation in the electrolyte. While trace amounts (approximate to 1-15 ppm) do not affect the trans-gauche isomerism of SN, the presence of water in large amounts (approximate to 5500 ppm) submerges the plasticity of SN. Subjugating the electrolyte to different thermal protocol resulted in enhancement of trans concentration only. This is an interesting observation as it demonstrates a simple and effective procedure involving utilization of an optimized set of external parameters to decouple solvation from trans-gauche isomerism. Observations from the ionic conductivity of various samples were accounted by changes in signature isomer and ion-association bands in the mid-IR regime and also from plastic to normal crystal transition temperature peak obtained from thermal studies. We present a framework for performance evaluation of manufacturing systems subject to failure and repair. In particular, we determine the mean and variance of accumulated production over a specified time frame and show the usefulness of these results in system design and in evaluating operational policies for manufacturing systems. We extend this analysis for lead time as well. A detailed performability study is carried out for the generic model of a manufacturing system with centralized material handling. Several numerical results are presented, and the relevance of performability analysis in resolving system design issues is highlighted. Specific problems addressed include computing the distribution of total production over a shift period, determining the shift length necessary to deliver a given production target with a desired probability, and obtaining the distribution of Manufacturing Lead Time, all in the face of potential subsystem failures.

The HeI photoelectron spectrum of the hydrogen bonded hetero-dimer H2Scdots, three dots, centeredHCl shows two vertical ionization energies at 10.91 and 12.16 eV. Ab initio MO calculations reveal that these features are due to the sulphur and chlorine lone pair ionizations respectively. Results show that while the ground ionic state is repulsive the first excited ionic state is strongly bound. The photoelectron spectrum of the diethyl sulphidecdots, three dots, centeredHCl complex is similar to that of H2Scdots, three dots, centeredHCl.

Weak molecular interactions such as those in pyridine-iodine, benzene-iodine and benzene-chloroform systems oriented in thermotropic liquid crystals have been studied from the changes of the order parameters as a result of complex formation. The results indicate the formation of at least two types of charge transfer complexes in pyridine-iodine solutions. The pi-complexes in benzene-chloroform and benzene-iodine mixtures have also been detected. No detectable changes in the inter-proton distances in these systems were observed.

A new series of multielement flame-retardant plasticizers containing polyethylene stibinite phosphate esters have been prepared by bulk polymerization from ethylene glycol with various antimony (III) aryloxydichlorides and arylphosphorodichloridates possessing various combinations of substituent [Cl,Br,NO2]. All the polymers are pink-coloured viscous fluids. They were characterized by inherent viscosity, density, IR, H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. The thermal behaviour of the polymers was compared by thermogravimetric analysis and correlated with their structures. The flammability studies were carried out by the limiting oxygen index test. The polymers containing P, Sb, N and Pr elements in their backbone show superior thermal-and flame-retardant characteristics than the other polymers. A comparative study was carried out with one of the synthesized polymers as a polymeric flame-retardant additive to plasticized PVC. The results showed improved LOI and mechanical properties to that of the conventional flame-retardant additive composition. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

We have studied the metal-insulator transition at integer fillings in a triply degenerate Hubbard model using the Lanczos method. The critical Coulomb interaction strength U-c, is found to depend strongly on the band filling, with U-c similar to root 3 W (W is the bandwidth) at half filling for this case with threefold degeneracy. We discuss the implications of our results on metal-insulator transitions in strongly correlated systems in general, and on the unusual electronic ground state of the alkali-metal-doped fullerenes, in particular. (La0.667Ca0.333Mn1-xMO3-delta)-O-x (M = Mg, Li or Re) exhibit insulating behaviour and nonlinear current-voltage (J-E) relationship with voltage-limiting characteristics at temperatures below the ferromagnetic transition (T-c). The high current region is set in at field strengths <60 V/cm. Nonlinearity exponent, alpha in the relation J = kE(alpha) increases inversely with temperature. In presence of an external magnetic field, the J-E curves show higher current density at lower field strengths. Microstructural studies indicate that there is no segregation of secondary phases in the grain boundary regions. There is remarkable changes in p(T) as well as J-E curves with the grain size. Annealing studies in lower p(O2) atmospheres indicate that there is significant out-diffusion of oxygen ions through the grain boundary layer (GBL) regions creating oxygen vacancies in the GBL regions. The concentration of Mn4+ ions is lowered at the GBL due to oxygen vacancies, reducing the probability of hopping and resulting in insulating behaviour. Therefore an insulating barrier is introduced between two conducting grains and the carrier motion between the grains is inhibited. Thus below T-c, where sufficient increase in resistivity is observed the conduction may be arising as a result of spin dependent tunneling across the barrier. External electric field lowers the barrier height and establishes carrier transport across the barrier. Above certain field strength, barrier height diminishes significantly and thereby allowing large number of carriers for conduction, giving rise to highly nonlinear conductivity. In todays era of energy crisis and global warming, hydrogen has been projected as a sustainable alternative to depleting CO2-emitting fossil fuels. However, its deployment as an energy source is impeded by many issues, one of the most important being storage. Chemical hydrogen storage materials, in particular B?N compounds such as ammonia borane, with a potential storage capacity of 19.6 wt?% H2 and 0.145 kg?H?2?L-1, have been intensively studied from the standpoint of addressing the storage issues. Ammonia borane undergoes dehydrogenation through hydrolysis at room temperature in the presence of a catalyst, but its practical implementation is hindered by several problems affecting all of the chemical compounds in the reaction scheme, including ammonia borane, water, borate byproducts, and hydrogen. In this Minireview, we exhaustively survey the state of the art, discuss the fundamental problems, and, where applicable, propose solutions with the prospect of technological applications.
