We have measured the thermopower (S) of hole-doped LaMnO3 systems in order to see its dependence on the Mn4+ content as well as to investigate other crucial factors that determine S. We have carried out hole doping (creation of Mn4+ by two distinct means, namely, by the substitution of La by divalent cations such as Ca and Sr and by self-doping without aliovalent substitution). The thermopower is sensitive not only to the hole concentration but also to the process employed for hole doping, which we explain as arising from the differences in the nature of the hole-doped states. We also point out a general trend in the dependence of S on hole concentration at high temperatures (T> T-c), similar to that found in the normal-state thermopower of the cuprates.

X-ray and He(II) ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the interaction of CO with oxygen on potassium-, caesium- and barium-covered Ag surfaces have shown the formation of carbonate at 300 K. While on a caesium-covered surface only carbonate formation takes place, on the potassium- and barium-covered surfaces molecularly chemisorbed CO is also formed. The variation of the surface concentrations of carbon and oxygen with temperature has been examined and a reaction sequence for the interaction of CO with adsorbed oxygen on potassium-, caesium- and barium-covered Ag surfaces is suggested.

Hyperconjugation and inductive effects, rather than homoaromaticity, are responsible for the stabilization of the title anion in the gas phase; interaction of the double bond with the Li+ gegenion in the endo geometry contributes additionally in solution.

Protein fractions that bind retinol were isolated from the cytosol, nucleosol and chromatin of the oviduct magnum of laying hens. The proteins isolated from the three sources showed similar elution profiles on chromatography through Sephadex G-75 and G-50 columns, and comparable mobility during electrophoresis on sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide gels. Their molecular weights were calculated to be around 14500. When oviducts from vitamin A-depleted and vitamin A-repleted immature chicks given oestrogen injections for 6 consecutive days were incubated with [3H]retinyl acetate, uptake of the radioactivity in the nuclei of the vitamin A-depleted tissue was severalfold higher than that in the nuclei from the vitamin A-repleted tissue.

A recent theoretical model developed by Imparato et al. Phys of the experimentally measured heat and work effects produced by the thermal fluctuations of single micron-sized polystyrene beads in stationary and moving optical traps has proved to be quite successful in rationalizing the observed experimental data. The model, based on the overdamped Brownian dynamics of a particle in a harmonic potential that moves at a constant speed under a time-dependent force, is used to obtain an approximate expression for the distribution of the heat dissipated by the particle at long times. In this paper, we generalize the above model to consider particle dynamics in the presence of colored noise, without passing to the overdamped limit, as a way of modeling experimental situations in which the fluctuations of the medium exhibit long-lived temporal correlations, of the kind characteristic of polymeric solutions, for instance, or of similar viscoelastic fluids. Although we have not been able to find an expression for the heat distribution itself, we do obtain exact expressions for its mean and variance, both for the static and for the moving trap cases. These moments are valid for arbitrary times and they also hold in the inertial regime, but they reduce exactly to the results of Imparato et al. in appropriate limits. The transformation of vaterite to calcite was investigated systematically. The transition temperature and the energetics of the transformation were determined from differential thermal curves. The variations of lattice constants and crystallite size, accompanying the transformation were studied by X-ray diffractometry. The kinetics of transformation were investigated in the temperature range 460–490°C. The kinetic data were analysed with the help of three separate solid-state models.

Acetone powders prepared from leaf extracts of Tecoma stans L. were found to catalyze the oxidation of catechol to 3,4,3',4'-tetrahydroxydiphenyl. Fractionation of the acetone powders obtained from Tecoma leaves with acetone, negative adsorption of the acetone fraction with tricalcium phosphate gel, and chromatography of the gel supernatant on DEAE-Sephadex yielded a 68-fold purified enzyme with 66% recovery. The enzyme had an optimum pH around 7.2. It showed a temperature optimum of 30° and the Km for catechol was determined as 2 x 10-4 m. The purified enzyme moved as a single band on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Its activity was found to be partially stimulated by Mg2+. The reaction was not inhibited by o-phenanthroline and agr,agr'-dipyridyl. The purified enzyme was highly insensitive to a range of copper-chelating agents. It was not affected appreciably by thiol inhibitors. The reaction was found to be suppressed to a considerable extent by reducing agents like GSH, cysteine, cysteamine, and ascorbic acid. The purified enzyme was remarkably specific for catechol. Catalase affected neither the enzyme activity nor the time course of the reaction. Hydrogen peroxide was not formed as a product of the reaction.

The crystal structure of cyclo-(L-histidyl-L-aspartyl) trihydrate has been determined by x-ray diffraction techniques, and refined to a final R index of 0.056 for 1601 reflections. The molecule is in a folded conformation, with the imidazole ring facing the diketopiperazine ring. However, since the diketopiperazine ring is essentially planar, the interaction between the two rings is not as intimate as in those cyclic dipeptides in which the diketopiperazine ring is in a boat conformation with the side chain occupying an axial, or flagpole, site. Planarity of the diketopiperazine ring may be dictated by steric interactions between the imidazole ring and the aspartyl side chain. The molecule is a zwitterion, a proton having been transferred from the carboxyl group of the aspartyl side chain to the imidazole ring.

Arabinomannan-containing glycolipids, relevant to the mycobacterial cell-wall component lipoarabinomannan, were synthesized by chemical methods. The glycolipids were presented with tri- and tetrasaccharide arabinomannans as the sugar portion and a double alkyl chain as the lyophilic portion. Following synthesis, systematic biological and biophysical studies were undertaken in order to identify the effects of the glycolipids during mycobacterium growth. The studies included mycobacterial growth, biofilm formation and motility assays. From the studies, it was observed that the synthetic glycolipid with higher arabinan residues inhibited the mycobacterial growth, lessened the biofilm formation and impaired the motility of mycobacteria. A surface plasmon resonance study involving the immobilized glycan surface and the mycobacterial crude lysates as analytes showed specificities of the interactions. Further, it was found that cell lysates from motile bacteria bound oligosaccharide with higher affinity than non-motile bacteria.

3C resonances of carbonyl and methyl groups in amides are shifted down-field on interaction with alkali and alkaline earth metal salts. The magnitude of the shift depends on the ionic potential of the cation. Ions like Li+ bind to the amide carbonyl group both in neat amide solutions as well as in concentrated salt solutions in water.

We propose a self-regularized pseudo-time marching scheme to solve the ill-posed, nonlinear inverse problem associated with diffuse propagation of coherent light in a tissuelike object. In particular, in the context of diffuse correlation tomography (DCT), we consider the recovery of mechanical property distributions from partial and noisy boundary measurements of light intensity autocorrelation. We prove the existence of a minimizer for the Newton algorithm after establishing the existence of weak solutions for the forward equation of light amplitude autocorrelation and its Frechet derivative and adjoint. The asymptotic stability of the solution of the ordinary differential equation obtained through the introduction of the pseudo-time is also analyzed. We show that the asymptotic solution obtained through the pseudo-time marching converges to that optimal solution provided the Hessian of the forward equation is positive definite in the neighborhood of optimal solution. The superior noise tolerance and regularization-insensitive nature of pseudo-dynamic strategy are proved through numerical simulations in the context of both DCT and diffuse optical tomography. The complete amino acid sequence of winged bean basic agglutinin (WBA I) was obtained by a combination of manual and gas-phase sequencing methods. Peptide fragments for sequence analyses were obtained by enzymatic cleavages using trypsin and Staphylococcus aureus V8 endoproteinase and by chemical cleavages using iodosobenzoic acid, hydroxylamine, and formic acid. COOH-terminal sequence analysis of WBA I and other peptides was performed using carboxypeptidase Y. The primary structure of WBA I was homologous to those of other legume lectins and more so to Erythrina corallodendron. Interestingly, the sequence shows remarkable identities in the regions involved in the association of the two monomers of E. corallodendron lectin. Other conserved regions are the double metal-binding site and residues contributing to the formation of the hydrophobic cavity and the carbohydrate-binding site. Chemical modification studies both in the presence and absence of N-acetylgalactosamine together with sequence analyses of tryptophan-containing tryptic peptides demonstrate that tryptophan 133 is involved in the binding of carbohydrate ligands by the lectin. The location of tryptophan 133 at the active center of WBA I for the first time subserves to explain a role for one of the most conserved residues in legume lectins.

Syntheses of the isomers of the C11 acid, 1(a),3(a)- dimethylcyclohexane-1 (e),2(e),3(e)-tricarboxylic acid (A) and 1(a),3(e)-dimethylcyclohexane-1(e),2(e),3(a)-tricarboxylic acid (B), the latter by two different routes, are reported. Two of the four possible isomers of the precursor triester, trimethyl 1-methylcyclohexane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate, on individual methylation followed by hydrolysis, gave the trans,meso-acid (A), identified by comparison with an authentic sample, and the cis,trans-form (B) whose structure and configuration were proved by comparison with a specimen obtained by the unambiguous and highly stereoselective second synthesis. This demonstrated that methylation of the triester isomers occurs stereospecifically and exclusively at C-3. In the second sequence, it has been possible to assign definite conformations to four key intermediates and the final product, directly from n.m.r. spectra, from changes in these spectra accompanying specific steps, and from chemical evidence. Comparison of the n.m.r. spectra of the isomeric triesters (A) and (B) has provided unequivocal proof of the accepted trans, meso configuration for the abietic acid degradation product (A).
